I'm really starting to hate hearing kids review older games.

They’ve been told that heroic fantasy is racist for 2/3rds of their life. Sure didn’t make Marvel some money, but it killed all their Disney Princess franchises. I hope it was worth it(it’s looking like it wasn’t).
You realize your descriptor doesn't even apply to the majority of Final Fantasy games right? If the series only ever made high fantasy games maybe you'd have a point, but it doesn't. It isn't even the style of most of them anymore.
Also one day folks will realize that people getting salty about folks not liking a game they like and bitching and calling their opinion lesser does nothing but make them hate it more, and justifiably so. Why play something with a fan base like that?
@@Nocturne989 What on Earth are you talking about? Their description was magic, swords, and spells. Literally all FF games have those things. Every single one. And all FF games are high fantasy. They aren't all medieval, but that's a different thing. Medieval is about a time period. Even the most futuristic FF games are still high fantasy. They all have magic, fantastical locations, monsters, heroes who save the world, etc....
1. The main story of FF12 is based on the real history of the wars between Ancient Rome, the Sassanid/Persian Empire, and the conquest of the kingdom of Armenia. So, perhaps you find it boring because it is based on real history.
2. The story of the Summons is based on myths from India about their Gods and their wars.
3. So, the composition of the FF12 story is a combination of two storylines, the war between Gods (or aftermath) and the conflict between ancient empires and the conquest of a kingdom.
4. I suspect that the story of FF12 doesn't have (technically) a happy ending unless you played the Nintendo DS sequel because the real-life story of the conquest of the kingdom of Armenia also doesn't have a happy ending.
So, yes, I played FF12 a lot. Best story of all the Final Fantasy games in my opinion.
I think The Ivalice Alliance team always make the best games. They don't make alot of em but every time they touch something, it's slept on masterpiece. Vagrant Stories, Ff12, Tactics. All master pieces. Tactics story is the best story. I would go so far as to say I think Game of Thrones used tactics for their story directions.
None of those things mean the story is good. Its terrible
The story is boring because it's poorly told, barely progresses for 70% of the game, and the characters are not developed well enough for most people to get emotionally invested in them or what happens to them. The fact that it's partially inspired by real history is not the issue at all. It's completely irrelevant. FF12 isn't some deeply complex historical tale, it's a generic rebels vs the Empire story, and it's not done very well.
@@theerealatm That's a completely ridiculous and factually inaccurate claim. Game of Thrones is based on books that were written in the 1990s by an old man who is not a gamer and has only ever played extremely basic early video games in the '70s and '80s (he has said so himself). He also began writing in 1990, long before FF Tactics existed. The inspiration for Game of Thrones was real life history, like the Wars of the Roses.

1- The fact that you say that the story barely progresses for 70% of the game tells me that you didn't pay much attention to it, perhaps it was boring to you since you didn't follow through with it but, that in fact is not correct
2- And it's not a generic "rebels vs the Empire story" because the Empire is not defeated at the end of the game, and also because part of the story was to save the empire, which you would know if you actually follow the story through

in my opinion, ff12 has the best gameplay of all final fantasy franchise. I don't know why they don't use this system anymore, it's super deep and fluid.

This brings back memories, lol. The most satisfying thing about this game is when I set the gambit just right that I don't have to even input command, lol. I mean, I don't think anyone play FF games for the fun gameplay, lol. I also love the vibes and the world-building. It's a pretty lively world for a FF games.

As a Final Fantasy fanboy, who's also largely a JRPG fanboy I would say its understandable given the age demographic that you fall into that enjoying many Final Fantasy games would be difficult. It can be rather hard to jump roughly a decade or more back in time in terms of game design trends and QoL compared to what you're used to, things that were cutting edge or experimental back then have become clunky and played out in comparison to modern systems.
If you want to figure out if Final Fantasy games before 10 are something you might enjoy the best starting point is probably Final Fantasy 9. It was created as a love-letter to all of the previous games in the series since it was the last game made by series founder Hironobu Sakaguchi and its main goal was to take the best aspects of the series to date and roll them up into a single title. However be warned that it still plays pretty slowly and that summon animations can still be ridiculously long.
As a JRPG fan you might want to give the company Falcom a look, they make JRPGs primarily belonging to one of 2 long running franchises. The Legend of Heroes franchise which is mostly known for its Trails series, and the YS Series.
The Legend of Heroes franchise are more traditional turn based RPGs for the most part. Mainly known for its Trails series, which spans 3(4 if you're Japanese) shorter series in different places on the same continent that tend to tie in together and even overlap at times. Often Persona fans either really love this series, or they really hate it because they think Trails of Cold Steel is just a knockoff of Persona. People like to say to start with Trails In The Sky, but Trails of Cold Steel as a series stands pretty well on its own.
The YS series is a long running series of Action RPGs with an emphasis on exploration largely starring the same main character across them. The games are structured so that you don't really need to have played any of the older games to understand the current games, however I would probably recommend YS VIII as a starting point just because it was my first Falcom game.
if i ever was to give final fantasy another go, it would probably be with 9 since everyone says it's the best. only thing really putting me off from it is the setting (which im sure is probably fine and im just letting personal taste get in the way). and someone else in the comments also recommended trails and ys, which ive honestly never heard much about. so maybe i'll give them a try if i can ever catch them during a good sale, thanks homie

Yeah I felt sort of underwhelmed halfway through the game. After I unlocked my board and found out that I'm still only attacking I wasn't exactly excited to continue.

I did play Final Fantasy XII around 2007-8 for the first time and The Zodiac Age, and the latter is the best way to play it.
It was my first Final Fantasy and it's my favorite despite the issues.

I've always played games for the story and characters, the gameplay acts as more of a glue to hold that together for me. A game with a great story but mid gameplay is going to be better in my eyes than a game with great gameplay but a story I hate. That being said, I didn't remember much of anything about FF12, less than I wished I could've had more control in the battles, leaving it up to a bunch of logic sequences felt too hands-off for my liking. Of course, that's just me, I'm always happy to see people talk about things they like
I'm the opposite, gameplay takes priority (actually, music is above everything) and I still thought XII was meh. The ost isn't as memorable as previous FFs, the characters and story are uninteresting and the combat is mostly passive so it gets boring. The only part of the game I truly enjoyed were the Hunts and Espers
Hey at 16:15 you seem pretty charged about this but I feel like I need to point out theres a good chance theres an issue with your setup, not sure if its added lag from the monitor or controller but I think the R1 is coming out abnormally slow there. You might want to do an input lag test with something else.
Regarding the backhop specifically though theres no specific input lag on it and its not going go have any more lag than any other inputs on your setup. im not sure who told you rolls have input lag (obviously other than whatever is normal on your setup) as thats completely false. I think the issue here is just the backhop startup animation has poor visual clarity, you can see the character take his time to bend his knees a little before the hop but its subtle. I dont really think its a big deal since the backhop is hardly ever useful compared to a roll though.
i've tried on multiple different TVs/monitors (with different HDMI cables and settings) and the results are the same every time. im sure there are minor discrepancies with each one but there's lag regardless.
additionally, when i'm just navigating the menu in ER, there's no noticeable lag at all - that works just fine. i've never experienced input lag this bad on any other game i've played on the console (including other fromsoft games). sure, there could be a little, but i shouldn't be able to go through the footage frame by frame and see such a massive delay from button release to action.
i understand that maybe the backhop in particular wasn't the best example, but to me it still feels like there's noticeable delay on most non-menu actions in the game. and from what i've seen online, several others have noticed the same issues (sure, some of them may have just been salt posts, but still).

FF is a good franchise. The games are mostly good. You’re still a kid so I’m just gonna say you haven’t reached that level of maturity yet to appreciate the original worlds, fun characters and dope settings of the older games. I know it’s funny memes to say “haha XIV is $13 a month for a game I won’t even like” but to that I’ll say, don’t knock it till you try it OR shut up about it. As a gamer who is older and infinitely more jaded than yourself I gotta say 14 is the best gaming experience I’ve had in well over a decade. That said, I do recommend you give it a try. People tend to work backwards from 14 because it provides a pretty much all-encompassing view of what’s actually so good about the series.

As somebody else who's an "older and more jaded" gamer who's taste in games pretty diametrically opposes Stel's chart, could you kindly back up, take a look at yourself.
You're claiming that they're "not mature enough" to appreciate older games(as opposed to admitting it can be hard to jump roughly a decade back in game design trends relative to the era of games they're most used to), while also losing your temper over them not liking a game you like?
And as a wholehearted Final Fantasy fanboy, do you know what the best thing about Final Fantasy 14 is? That the only part of the game worth playing is included in what they give you for free. Heavensward is still the frontman for the entire game 7 years after it released and is literally part of the free demo, the game has peaked and the fanbase is so pushy that it deserves all the teasing it gets.

i kinda liked it, but once they came out with fast forward mechanisms in remasters, the illusion of the world shifted...it felt so empty and boring, the main story felt flat...BUT i loved the party AI system tbh

I tried to play this game for the first time recently. I'm a pretty big fan of the FF series in general but this game was boring AF gave it 1 to 2 hours then uninstalled.

Akiin I feel like your forgetting the fact that dragon quest inspired final fantasy existence, is the progenitor of the genre and every rpg is built off of it (plus dragon quest is just better than final fantasy if only by a bit)

Nice video! As someone who's never played a Final Fantasy games or liked their aesthetic, you did a great job explaining how the game works and how some of the systems are appealing to play with... I mean, I definitely won't be playing any of those games anytime soon (I think the last RPG I really enjoyed playing was Bug Fables), but I'm glad to know what they're like in under 40 minutes

Persona 4 is my favorite Persona game.
I don’t understand why anyone likes Persona 5 it got so boring I rushed it to beat the game it was just so incredibly boring that the only reason why I continued playing it was to beat the game.

I think the reason I liked FF13 so much is because I played for the visuals and to be a contrarian, then I ended up liking the story and characters after the first disk, I can certaintly understand not liking it though.
i mean. i definitely loved the battle system, and i thought the story premise was really interesting. i wasnt too big a fan of most of the characters but i could see myself growing to love them. it's just the dumb ass linearity that made me shy away from it - which is a basic answer, but it's definitely a huge problem with the game
I didn't like the ps2 version when it came out because I thought it was too different from the previous games, I didn't like the new battle system because I was used from the classic ATB battle system. However when it came on ps4 I started to like it, especially gameplay wise, I thought it improved so much, but I find the story really boring, it felt like it was too much about the politics also Vaan shouldn't be the protagonist, he doesn't do anything

I like FF games but lmao that intro, especially the 14 fanboys. As for your quadrant thing, I'd swap Persona for FF honestly, but different tastes. HOWEVER, I see a serious lack of Trails and Ys games. If you want the best of the best, try those. They're both good and fun, while having lots of quality of life features (like saving anywhere, XP scaling or turbo mode) and easily the best soundtracks.

people probably dont have anything good to say about this terrible game because 70% of the time it plays itself. Also its a precursor to final fantasy 13, where you walk down different corridoors with the same texture and the same enemies on repeat for 8 hours. Also, the entire story is just a new hope.
