    Let's make some sail covers! Last week, Steve cut used sail material from Victoria in preparation for going to work on the stack pack style sail covers with Paul, a friend of the channel, who answered Robin's call for help on Facebook. Equipped to sew them with a heavy duty Sailrite machine, Steve and Paul worked together to take Steve's notes and some new materials to make them into something that will keep the Doyle-designed and Doyle-built sails protected from the elements when the boat's not sailing.
    We also have a look at the coastal flooding during the extreme high tides experienced on the east coast in the last couple of weeks, we move the boat to a new dock where southern winds won't be pushing Arabella into the dock, and Steve does some hand sewing to button details on the sail covers.

    Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

    Steve, keep a chunk of beeswax in your sewing kit and rub it on your threads when you're hand stitching... it'll keep the threads lubed and stuck together so they don't twist and get tangled. And maybe get yourself a sailors palm. Great videos.... please keep them coming.

    When people found out that I'd gotten a Sailrite machine, the offers of employment poured in. The most interesting was sewing a chain into the hem at the bottom of a theater curtain. I avoided using double-stick basting tape because the glue tended to stick to the thread and clog the needle.

    • @AcornToArabella
      @AcornToArabella  5 месяцев назад +2

    Question: Could the turnbuckle be moved to the top of the stay where there's a foot of room rather than the bottom where it currently lives, thereby retaining the adjustability?

    Dude's sailright machine needs some adjustments. Dropping a lot of stitches. Check timing, insertion of needle (make sure flat on the tip is toward the bobbin), make sure bobbin direction is right, having the thread reflex back through the spring instead of it coming straight off the bobbin. On a zig zag sometimes you need to loosen the top tension a scoshe because it will drag the needle over and pull the thread too tight and pulls the loop shut at the needle when the bobbin shuttle hook comes around. Many things can be the problem. But it stinks when it's on a important project.

      As for the skipped stitches, we found out from Sailrite that this particular machine doesn’t do well with lubricated thread. As an insurance agent, and not a seamstress, this was a learning curve lol. PS: this was my very first attempt at a job like this. Definitely learned a lot on this one. By the end of the job, the stitches were running smooth thank you for the advice! Next time around will be better I’m sure.

    Dear Anne, Robin, Steve and all others who worked on Arabella,
    The sail covers are looking very nice and the color fit so well with the varnish painted wood on board of Arabella. Willeke and I learned via our news bulletins on TV that there was a lot of floods going on in the neighborhood where Arabella is in the marina. Also in the North states of the USA and in Canada the freezing temperatures broke records and thousands and thousands of people had to live without electricity. With us the winter broke all records in raining for days and even weeks what caused a unknown water level in rivers and canals. It was in certain places really creepy because as you might know about 68% of our country is below sea level. We are happy that our dikes turned out to be strong enough, but as the sea water level rises, the dikes will have to become considerably higher and therefore wider. This will be accompanied by indescribably high costs, so the most heavily taxed country in the world (as we are) will collect even more taxes from its citizens.
    Never the less WIlleke and I look forward to your next vlog and send you love from the Netherlands

    An interesting episode with lots of things going on... battery packs, sewing, stay re-engineering and moving Arabella. All in a half hour! One thing I was curious about and may have missed. 75 mph winds coming, relocated the boat and I saw the flooded access to the shore... nothing really about the storm/wind itself. In previous episodes you showed how you secured the boat, let us see a glimpse of mother nature's power, etc. but I missed that this week. Will you share an update? Should I look on other social media? Or was it just too crazy to try and film. In any case, hope all is well. I am curious about what "a day in the life" of living aboard is like. How do you guys sleep in what seems like a small bunk, breakfast prep? Showers? Hanging out time? How is Akiva doing? So much to take in. Continued blessings and safety for the skipper & crew!

    At the end of this episode you mentioned replacing the wire for a longer one and removing the turnbuckle. Could you temporarily just move the turnbuckle to the top since you have nearly a foot of room available up top. Loved watching the construction of arabella.

    Good morning from the deep south. You may need to add reinforcement where the end of each pipe is. Even after rounding mine off, the ends eventually rubbed through the fabric. Not sure what type of piping you will use, I have 3/4" PVC.

    • @AcornToArabella
      @AcornToArabella  5 месяцев назад +2

      On the staysail it’s not important to be able to fine-tune what is there. Now that the rig has been tuned and the boat has swelled It’s possible that the turnbuckle is completely unnecessary. I’m sure Steve will talk about it a lot more in the future, Robbie Doyle has been very, very helpful

    Can you put the turnbuckle at the top or is that too much weight up high? Should be exactly the same strength, you can still adjust it (although you have to climb up to do it), and you don't have to use a Dynema strap. Enjoyed the video a lot!

    • @AcornToArabella
      @AcornToArabella  5 месяцев назад +1

      It’s not common practice because sometimes it needs adjusting, so it’s put down at deck. Not sure how this one will resolve! -Anne

    • @alexpline
      @alexpline 5 месяцев назад

      @@AcornToArabella I would also suggest at least temporarily putting the turnbuckle at the top because it will be much easier to tension that the dyneema strop. While it's not ideal to have it up there, it won't be a problem for Steve to get it adjusted, it's not much heavier than the wire itself and will not need to be inspected as often as dyneema.

  • @maverag0

    Aft corner of the sail is called the clue.

    • @freesk8
      @freesk8 5 месяцев назад

      For those who care, here are the names of the edges and corners of a triangular sail. The edge along the mast is called the luff. When you let the sail out too far, and the wind catches the sail from the back side and makes it wrinkle and flap, that is called luffing the sail. The bottom edge of the sail, along the boom, is called the foot. The free edge of the sail, to the aft, the part that has battens, is called the leech. As for the corners of the sail, the top is called the head. The corner where the mast meets the boom is called the tack. And as mentioned above, the aft corner of the sail, at the far end of the boom, is called the clue. Why that is, I haven't a clue! :)
