James Jamerson is thee best Bass Player ever. I gave you this topic, tee hee!!! But this guy was everything and changed the way that most bass playing feels and sounds. Thank You for this episode. A lot of things that I just founded out about this GIANT!
James Jamerson played on a massive amount of totally classic soul music that cannot be equaled except by Stax Volt Records. He was a giant in music. He influenced musicians in rock music too. All the Funk Brothers were greats, jazz-trained geniuses
Mr. James Jamerson was an extremely talented bass player. Remember Marvin Gaye speaking of him laying on the floor playing as he was recording a record. Thanks, WPBTV for showcasing him. 🎸🌹🎼 Motown, Stax and Philly all had great house bands. In addition, Fame studio in Muscle Shoals, AL had The Swampers. They were great studio musicians and helped Aretha Franklin with her sound. Many other classic tracts by noted muscians were recorded there. Let's not forget about Chess Records, out of Chicago too.
Also, the Wrecking Crew out in LA, who actually played on a wide range of musical styles. They wasn't as pigeon holed as the other great session crews, was tied to labels.
Motown records had the Funk Brothers Philadelphia International had MFSB it's difficult for me to say who's the best with Stax having Booker T and the MG's
@JohnAlston-ib2ij Awesome list. All those session guys were great and left their fingerprints all over classic R&B/Soul music... but don't leave out those blue-eyed soul brothers from Muscle Shoals.
During a bathroom break trying to find the Jackson 5 their sound James did his warmup sitting on the toilet. Barry beat on door saying what's that you playing......it ended up being the bass line for I want you back "
Are you sure about that? It's undisputed that Wilton Felder played the bass on "I want you back". I've seen footage of him talking about it and it would seem he came up with the line. Quite a lot of Jamerson's most iconic bass parts have been wrongly claimed by other players to be their work, but this is not one of them as far as I can make out.
@@Maltloaflegrande he might have played the bass but it was Jameson's warm up lick. Plus on most j5 records James played exclusively for them ....see Greatest bass line ever Darling Dear RUclips
@@Maltloaflegrande nah no one played for the Jackson's except James.....he lying........ James also secretly did all the popular bass lines for stax under fictitious names
@@darwinfussle5031 That's a new one and a massive insult to Duck Dunn, as well as Lewis Steinberg and other Memphis bassists. Jamerson didn't play in the Stax studio any more than Carol Kaye played in the snakepit or Duck Dunn played with the Wrecking Crew. Three great studio setups, three great bassists and they all stayed in their own territories; it really was as simple as that. I acknowledge Jamerson's playing of the cracking bassline on "Darling Dear" everyone with an interest in the matter knows this to be the case and he played on other J5 hits too,.
@@Maltloaflegrande not really..... Motown had spys following their musicians so that they wouldn't play for any other companies .... I'm a studio musician myself as well as my brother who played for Earth wind and fire for 12 years.... Maurice White told me ( an original funk brother and played on My Guy ) also snuck and played for Chess, Stax, Atlantic, and that other Detroit record company I can't think of. All musician sighed a exclusive contract not to share their sound. I can tell James sound a mile off.....ps. j5 was the Stax sound

The Fender Precision had been in production for 10 years, when Jamerson switched over from upright.

Forgot about them. Appreciated the reminder. 🎼
That was a golden age of "house bands" with Motown, Stax, and the Wrecking Crew. Any of these 3 are worthy of consideration as the greatest.
James is the master
Motown is classic james is one of the finest he will live on whats going on is 1 of my favourite

It's kinda difficult. ? New Orleans , Kansas city st Louis flat shoals... my bad greater LA. Creoles Cajun Tenn. Miss . Very good mix up.
Best house band to me Stax!!
Great video coverage Brother 💯
Motown had the best house band because blacks and whites work together. They were friends also. My girl put them on the Map

What happened to the intro?
Great Video, It's bass not bass like the fish.
The same Johnnie Mae Matthews who cheated Otis Williams & The Distants.
I would say between Stax Records, MoTown Records, Muscle Shoals, Chess Records and Philly International…. MoTown had the best house band
That's because they were Jazz Cats where the other cats were more blues based. They all were great!!
