However the Soviets wanted to create conflict if it ever fell apart to Keep Russia's neighbours weak. So when Arstakh voted to join the Armenian SSR. They instead gave it autonomy inside of Azerbaijan SSR. Then in 1991 the Artsakh republic asked for help from Armenia to get independence and they won. Then in 2020 Azerbaijan invaded. After total victory they abolished the republic and cleansed the area of Armenians. Around 250,000 were shipped back to Armenia. It was never recognized as anything but Azerbaijani territory although as an Australian it should have been given to Armenia. Essentially it is the fault of the Russians.

It wants or wanted independence because until just last year it has been populated by armenians in the majority since the iron age. However the Soviets wanted to create conflict if it ever fell apart to Keep Russia's neighbours weak. So when Arstakh voted to join the Armenian SSR. They instead gave it autonomy inside of Azerbaijan SSR. Then in 1991 the Artsakh republic asked for help from Armenia to get independence and they won. Then in 2020 Azerbaijan invaded. After total victory they abolished the republic and cleansed the area of Armenians. Around 250,000 were shipped back to Armenia. It was never recognized as anything but Azerbaijani territory although as an Australian it should have been given to Armenia. Essentially it is the fault of the Russians.
