My study of one of famous painting by French Master William Bouguereau. My goal is trying to match his skin tone color by using my pastel pencil technique.
What people confuse about those green color in the skin, my analyze is : - Maybe the color from pencil mix together and change into other colors. - Maybe that green color in the skin was the base color. This coloring technique is really true master skills. And what make me more surprising is that he can adjust the value of the colors directly into canvas.
Search about verdaccio, do some study for yourself. For me, it's a shame how you can demand more to a stranger, who is giving you free content, but is still not generous enough for you.
@@FFede-ji9lv yeah I know. Which is why I lean more towards Carravaggio. I favor more dramatic lighting (Baroque). Not a huge fan of traditional Renaissance painting/drawing.
@@33akachi10 Well, Bouguereau was an academicist painter, and he does have some works with more dramatic shadows (not much like Caravaggio of course). However, I don't think Mr. Cuong dulled the colors down that much; it was the contrast with the very dark hair that allowed the face to look brighter. I'm fond of the contrast that was before too, but the piece is remarkable anyway, amazing technique.
@@kavalkahn true. It's just a personal preference is all. "Academicist painter", yes and Neo Classical. Bouguereau was definitely born in the wrong era. It's really a shame he's not more well known. I actually seen a few of his paintings in person. They are quite amazing. I've always disliked the lighting on classical works though. I like work with character.
Wow! Your technique is amazing! Thanks for share this videos. I´m art student, and i learn so much step by step with your work. Best regards from Argentina
My favourite is the look at 3:56. It's even more vivid than towards the end when the tone is softened. The beginning penciled drawing in brown is just as enchanting. A spectacular study!
Your work is phenomenal, I wish we can get more behind the scenes in the future! One thing you can't beat though is the slightly annoyed expression of the original, it's priceless!
Ah it was so nice after the music stopped but then BAM again over that wonderful pencil sound. I wish this didn't have music. It's so pleasant to watch and learn like you're there. Beautiful!
The piece is beautiful really. The face is inviting and the scene is soft. The technique used is simple yet done masterfully making it pop. It shows high intelligence. Surely a valuable piece.
My art teacher always said: draw with your whole arm, not the wrist! Notice how their wrist is firm, that way you can shade and blend more softly and have pressure control🥰✨
Perfection. Lot of folks complaining about the transition from green to flesh wasn’t complete. Get your pastel pencils out , preferably carbothello and just experiment gently layering various colours over green. Familiarise yourself with the mixes, how various layers produce different outcomes. If you go a little too pink, ‘quieten it down’ with green and vice versa. Do the work, that’s how you learn.
On top of the verdaccio technique thing people explained for the green; For a texture artist doing textures for a 3d model - sometimes when you're doing skintone from scratch, you'll have various layers of tones based on where bone, fat, muscle, veins, etc... is. So there will be various blue, red, yellow, and green under the skin - the green being fat deposits. I imagine that principle and this idea are linked.
I shouldn’t watch these. It’s just a constant reminder of how I could never do something like this but would love to be as talented. This must give the artist immense pleasure, I can only dream....
the green colour is for the undertone of the skin. it seems odd but it gives off such an accurate because if you think about it, our veins which are located under the skin is greenish in colour. thats why it results in such a gorgeous skin colour
Its called underpainting . Often artist will use a yellow ochre or maybe a muted blue, the surprise I think to many was the vivid tone of the green. I might have gone with sap green mixed with a touch of raw sienna and white to present a more muted under color. a very mild mix of purple lavender like quinocradone violet and indian yellow with white would do very well to compliment the under color, as they were colors of "Bouguereau's" time. These under colors are layered in first to influence the flesh tones applied on top for warm or cool effects.
Ok so I’ve been struggling a lot with my mental health lately. I feel fucked up and twisted and just... too hurt and fragile to ask for help from anyone. Which makes me feel worse. So other than the fact you use pencil like like an oil painting piece, and the drawing is godly, this was the first thing I watched that made me feel calm: The only other thing I was thinking about was how I wanted to say thank you for uploading. So yes. Um I think that’s your intention but I wanted to let you know how much it helped. For 7 minutes I didn’t feel scared or anxious or like everything’s on fire
I'm an enthusiast in art and illustration, and I'm learning about classic methods of painting, I have a question for you: Is that 1:48 an Italian Verdaccio after a Grisaille?
Many people forget verdaccio (i forget the term all the time) but for those wondering why he started out with her being green is because we all have undertones of yellow, green, or blue in our skin. The redness or the flush of our skin comes from blood running through veins. :) If you include verdaccio it makes the paintings turn out as if bursting with life.
looks like it's the masterpiece by some artist from Renaissance
Варвара Ильина because it is
For me looks like a Italian baroque portrait
Ahem..... "Bouguereau".....
Exactly!!!!
Super👍👍👍
I'd really like it if this was a timelapse, we're definitely missing quite a few stages

the green base makes the blush stand out more
it makes the redder portions stand out and it makes the skin appear to have more depth
It’s the same as how we have blueish and greenish undertones. He blends the tan color on top of it to add extra life
i think it's supposed to make the skin have more depth. if you look close enough, it's still present at 3:28
People have undertones in their skin colors, olive is a common one in ethnically French people.
I was actually really interested in how you were going to turn the green into a skin tone. It’s a shame you skipped that part
Yattah123 it is the same principle that is used in makeup, green conceals red blemishes because green is opposite to red
@@clonblurmin8194 this is on a canvas, not a face full of acne. what does that have to do with this?
@@donotreply8979 it looks more realistic. Green is the undertone of her skin that's why
@@donotreply8979 it's called color theory. Canvas or face with acne it applies in both.

Beautiful ! Interesting technique, starting skin color with a green basis.
Yeah so you bild the different undertones and the result is a ralistic skin
old portrait painting technique Verdaccio uses Green undertone/ Verdaille is a painting done in green scale.
Idk why I got it in my recommendation but I’m so glad it happened. Thanks For sharing such a lovely masterpiece
Bouguereau is my favorite artist, and this work of yours is truly enchanting.
Me too. I like the polished/lacquered aspect of his painting ☺
awe man the shadows on the face at 4:00 was amazing. Why dull it down? I'm more in the camp of Caravaggio when it comes to lighting.
Because this was a study of Bouguereau.
