It's just regular vanilla cake with a bit extra butter and sugar creamed together, plus whole eggs (and sometimes and extra yolk) instead of the also popular "white" flavor cake that uses less of the butter and doesn't use yolks at all for a less rich and more delicate vanilla flavor. Vanilla cake itself, just uses more vanilla, it's not as dense and buttery rich as yellow, and not as delicately flavored and fluffily light textured as white, so it comes out to a very meh cake. I'm not a big vanilla cake fan myself, but I prefer yellow over white or vanilla anyday (I just love butter). However, a yellow cake with chocolate frosting is probably the most generic cake he could have ever chosen, it's like his mom made his 1st birthay smash cake from Duncan Haynes box mix and jarred frosting and he refused to ever have any other kind of cake for any reason because otherwise his taste is frankly abyssmal.
When I first met my husband in reallife, I made him onion soup. he told me that he liked my onion soup. I made it for him once a week until he told me that he actually hates onions. The reason why he lied to me was because he came out of a abusive relationship and was afraid that I would be angry and leave him if he told me the truth. I calmly asked him what food he dislikes else, and he gave me a big list. He is a picky eater and has even mild allergies, and he literally rather ate something he is allergic to in order to please me. It bothered me more that he risked his health than just telling me the truth. Eversince, he is more relaxed about his real opinion because he knows I won't reject him for his taste. Communication is the key.

I did the same thing for years. Every birthday I got chocolate cake. I hated it. I had an identity crisis a couple years ago and ended up having a panic attack because my mom asked if I wanted a chocolate fudge cake for my birthday. I just sort of broke down saying “I don’t like chocolate” over and over.
This is so sweet, but rather easy to fix. Order your favorite type of cake as dessert somewhere, and say you just wanted to try something new. Once you start eating, start talking about how good it is and "this might just be my new favorite kind of cake!" And offer to give your partner some to try. If they pay attention to you and the cake they bake is really for you, they'll probably switch the cake they make because they see that you're happy while eating the "new" flavor and they want to make you happy for your birthday.
It’s okay to communicate with your partner. I think if you had told him gently the first year that you’re not a fan of that combo, he would have been okay. Like don’t tel him as soon as he brings it out but maybe a few weeks before your birthday the next year say “oh I really loved that you made me that cake last year! I would love cheesecake this year!” And he doesn’t have to make it from scratch, you could say it’s totally fine to be store bought, you loved that he put in the effort to do something lovely like that

It’s just weird to me because in my family if it’s your birthday you can decide what the meal will be along with what you want to eat for dessert, which I always found very nice because even if everything went bad you could still get excited and happy knowing that you’re going to have a meal to look forward to. I had this wonderful, thoughtful boss who would frequently bring in coffee from the neighboring coffee shop, one or two times a week. The coffee shop won loads of local awards and was considered one of the best. When he was out of town, sometimes his wife would drop by with coffee. It was absolutely the sweetest thing. Never had the heart to let either one know I absolutely HATE coffee.
If I was that husband I would prefer her to say it out honestly than pretend it for me. Doesn't matter how bad truth hurts, I always prefer it over lies.
The one thing I love most about my husband is his honesty. The first year we were together I had gotten up at 4am to make him breakfast before he left for work. I was super tired because I got off work at midnight and had barely slept. I had forgotten about making tea in the coffee pot the night before (like I said tired don't judge lol) and I was so sleepy that I didn't notice I had left the tea bags in the filter holder so I just added coffee on top and the water in the back and proceeded to start making biscuits. Well, he gets up at 5 and sat down for breakfast and his first sip of coffee he says "damn that's the worse cup of coffee I've ever had". I was fuming for a full 30 seconds before I tasted mine. Yeap, nasty 🤣 he was right. It was the worst cup of coffee I'd ever tasted too. 15 yrs later and he still will ask if I made him some tea-offee 🤣 that day I realized that he would be brutally honest with me and I loved it. I don't have to play guessing games with him and wonder if he likes something or not. Communication is key. Honesty is best. Tea-offee anyone 🤣💜🤣
If you can’t communicate with each other honestly and with humour over something this small - there is unhappiness in one or both of you in bigger things that will eventually turn to resentment.

April 1 is literally the perfect date to find someone to live your life with because if you ever forget the anniversary you could just say “April fools!” Online, it would be so easy just to order a bunch of stuff from your nearest grocery store and have it sent to the house even though it’s so expensive.

I had this wonderful, thoughtful boss who would frequently bring in coffee from the neighboring coffee shop, one or two times a week. The coffee shop won loads of local awards and was considered one of the best. When he was out of town, sometimes his wife would drop by with coffee. It was absolutely the sweetest thing.
Never had the heart to let either one know I absolutely HATE coffee.
If I was that husband I would prefer her to say it out honestly than pretend it for me. Doesn't matter how bad truth hurts, I always prefer it over lies.

The one thing I love most about my husband is his honesty. The first year we were together I had gotten up at 4am to make him breakfast before he left for work. I was super tired because I got off work at midnight and had barely slept. I had forgotten about making tea in the coffee pot the night before (like I said tired don't judge lol) and I was so sleepy that I didn't notice I had left the tea bags in the filter holder so I just added coffee on top and the water in the back and proceeded to start making biscuits. Well, he gets up at 5 and sat down for breakfast and his first sip of coffee he says "damn that's the worse cup of coffee I've ever had". I was fuming for a full 30 seconds before I tasted mine. Yeap, nasty 🤣 he was right. It was the worst cup of coffee I'd ever tasted too. 15 yrs later and he still will ask if I made him some tea-offee 🤣 that day I realized that he would be brutally honest with me and I loved it. I don't have to play guessing games with him and wonder if he likes something or not. Communication is key. Honesty is best. Tea-offee anyone 🤣💜🤣

Tbf, I dislike yellow cake too but if my man bakes one I will eat a slice (or more) and be happy. He’s always so proud of them and it’s super infrequent. I typically do the cooking/baking.

Sometimes we make sacrifices for our beloved spouses. Sure it would have been nice for him to ask her what she wanted, but he’s so sweet to do it every year and she obviously loves the tradition. My husband didn’t used to make me a birthday cake. Then during Covid quarantine, he picked up the hobby of baking and making elaborate cakes as a challenge. So now I get great birthday cakes- dark chocolate Reeses’ cake is my favorite!
