I loved this film. It does have that same poignancy as Carrie. As well as some very disturbing scenes, but no jump scares. It's grounded in reality which accentuates the horrific moments. If you haven't seen it, please, give it a whirl...
Disturbing scene....yeah right???? at the end...for over an hour & half it's totally boring just her wondering around They could of easy cut about 30mins off this film..!!!
It’s a brilliant soundtrack isn’t it, I’m surprised Mark Kermode didn’t mention it himself, as he seems to appreciate a good score. It really drew me in to the film and added to the atmosphere. I’ve even been listening to it in its own right on Spotify!
Did anyone else get the idea that maybe Thelma was the villain? Anja started out as Thelma's accidental victim and then just became her prisoner at the end because Thelma wanted it that way. Seems kind of messed up.
Yes, Thelma became comfortable and ultimately empowered by her supernatural gift. As soon as she realizes her power, that she can harness it, she reconfigures her world to her liking: Kills the anchor of her past(dad) and essentially imprisons Anja. She wills Anja to act as she likes(breaks up with boyfriend, becomes Thelma's girlfriend). Illustration of that is when Anja wonders seemingly aimless to Thelma's dorm. In the final scene(s) is when she's aware of here power and using it to her discretion.
Can't freakin' wait to see Thelma! Joachim Trier's first two movies are masterpieces! Louder Than Bombs didn't blow me away as much as I had hoped it would. I hope Thelma is him back on track - certainly sounds like it.
@@Gotty1TheVerVe I agree - hated Thelma even more than Louder Than Bombs. Trier's upcoming movie will complete his Oslo trilogy - hope it's as good as the first entries, Reprise and Oslo 31 August.
this movie was quite poor i thought. Very showy direction with a script that doesnt really understand young adults very well. Also quite outdated view of lesbianism and religion. It could be a cultural thing, me having been raised in the Americas and not in Northern Europe.
Sebastian Rodriguez I completely agree. The movie was interesting, but it also left so many questions unanswered. Not in a way for the people watching to interpret, either. It was kind of just lazy, in my opinion. I found myself asking many times why a certain scene was in the movie, but those questions we never answered. BUT the acting was absolutely incredible. I just wanted much more from this movie.
I'm so happy Mark enjoyed this, although it did seem to be right up his alley. That opening shot is brilliant, and it only gets better from there.

One Norwegian reviewer simply dubbed it "Kari" which is our female name closest to Carrie.
Oh those Scandinavians!
Surprised no one has mentioned the excellent, haunting soundtrack.

@@Gotty1TheVerVe Thelma is a masterpiece. One of the most powerful coming-of-age character studies ever seen on screen.
Great movie! Eili Harboe is amazing!
Nice ASMR with the kisses and the breathing and the water sounds. Captivating.
Really funny that if you look up kermode Thelma flatliners comes up right after this
Good short review
It's ok but not great....1h : 42 mins in & nothing really happens..it seriously draggs its feet...
It's not just great, it's a masterpiece. Poignant and thought-provoking.
