this song is actually so much older than ram jams version the version most people think is the original, there have been many different versions of this song before ram jam did it the most well know version prior to ram jam was led belly in 1939 but the song is even older than that it was originally a song sang by convict workers and the first ever recording of it was in 1933, the songs changed numerous times over the years with lyrics added which has caused a lot of confusion and misinformation over the topic of the song and in particular what of who black betty is, ram jam themselves even added lyrics to the song, both the version by led belly and the original first recording can be found here on RUclips it's quite interesting to see how this song has changed over the years
Great to see this reaction. I admit to being a little confused, as I tried to request this one a long time ago... I'm not complaining. Fantastic to finally see this! Thank you, Micheal, Travis and Suzi!
Spiderbait are an Australian alternative rock band from Finley, New South Wales, formed in 1991 by bass guitarist and singer Janet English, drummer and singer Kram, and guitarist Damian Whitty. In 2004 the group's cover version of the 1930s Lead Belly song "Black Betty" reached number one on the ARIA Singles Chart. They have five top 20 albums: (1995), (1996), (1999), (2004), and (2005). The group have won two ARIA Music Awards with the first in 1997 as 'Best Alternative Release' for and the second in 2000 as 'Best Cover Art' for their single "Glockenpop". Between 2004 and 2013 the band was on hiatus to concentrate on solo projects and their personal lives-although periodically returning for occasional gigs. In November 2013 the band released its first studio album in nine years,
Kram (the drummer) is largely responsible for some of the most successful music to come out of Australia. Dudes an incredible talent and has a super keen eye for it as well.
Led Belly did the original Blues version in the early 1930's. Ram Jam modernised the song in 1977. Spiderbait version - In 2004, Australian alternative rock band Spiderbait released a version of "Black Betty" as the lead single from their sixth studio
This song originally came out in 1933 by James " Iron Head" Baker. The Evolution of this song is crazy. Once Ram Jam covered it, you couldn't go anywhere with out it being played in 1977. Up comes Spiderbait in 2004 and just takes it up a whole other level! Perfect video for this song as well. The steel banjo is a hell of a touch for this song. Absolute genius!!!

1st love you guys and all you doing your reactions, you guys make my days brighter. 2nd I wish more youtubers would react to this song and this band as they are criminally underrated. And lastly many happy blessings and fruitful years to you😊😊😊
IIRC Kram struggled to get the right vocals for this song. I think he ended up recording it while lying down in the bathroom. So it is him, with at least the natural reverb that comes from singing in a tiled room (hey folks, that's why even you and I sound good singing in the shower). Couldn't tell you anything about the production side of things though. As for the banjo, I suspect it was added to reinforce that connection with the southern rock/ blues rock feel of the Ram Jam version to what is otherwise a slightly faster and much heavier version.
I listen to 3 songs to get me hyped up to go to the gym; Kickstart My Heart, Powerman 5000's When Worlds Collide and this. Im ready to run through a brick wall afterwards.
Will never forget seeing Spiderbait live at Big Day Out (I think around 96 or 97). The mosh pit was so intense - got crushed so bad I got 2 fractured ribs! Rode the crowd to the front the got kicked up the ass by security because I wasn’t moving out fast enough…🤣🤘🏼
Love not only you are badasses, you are also from my hometown of the land and I also love… Aussie rock Now I need to get back and see you guys play- you kick ass
Great reaction. Spiderbiat perfected the Ram Jam version. Ram Jam was a 70s southern Rock-a-'billie band, and "Black Better" was their one-hit wonder. So I think that explains why Spiderbait started the song with a Banjo. Anyways this song and video kicks maximum ass.
Excellent vid clip, yes the best. Kram on the drums is racing against Black Betty the car. They're trying to beat each other but on a single lane road they find it hard to overtake each other. His voice is naturally quite grainy but it is slightly enhanced in parts. There is a clip out people are reacting to of this live at a festival which is great. The crowd are all crowd surfing and going nuts.
Stevie Wright and the Easy Beats were the Beatles of Australia.....they were the original rock stars of Australia......Stevie was a house hold name in Australia at age 17 international star at 19 heroin addict by time he was 21.....got clean came back at age 25 with Evie.....check his concert at Sydney Oprea House....Amazing......but sadly not long after relapsed to his vice.....Friday always on our mind....Stevie Wright the original Australian Rock Star💪
The only song I buy on iTunes! After listening to it on the Need for Speed underground 2 soundtrack, I just get crazy about it.. and i could'nt find it on Napster 😅🤟
How does his "Kram" it all in... a play on words there because "Kram" is the name of the drummer. I like this version the best but then I may be a little one-sided because I'm an Aussie.
you guys always make me crack up,all drummer's dream of destroying there kit onstage my son has done this a couple times he says it happens when the crowd really gets excited at the end of a encore and he is going with the flow i have played in bands all my life never felt like destroying my guitar drummers ?
Yah Nah that is pure Aussie Rock you have landed on Again. It is Aussie Rock anything goes, is why our guys don't end up on books in US, as they want them to change too much.
This song makes me so proud to be Australian
Settle its a cover .
@@redforest6872 the best cover 🇦🇺

200 year old American song so HEAPS of covers. This one is my blood rush favourite.
@@redforest6872 Yes, I think most of us know that. Settle, some people are
just enjoying themselves. Problem?
@@craigedwards2940 you're over estimating people.
This is the best version of Black Betty
Yes! This is the version all Aussie cover bands do.
by far
Hands down best version.
Metal Church has a kick ass version too but this Spiderbait version is my fave
One of the very few covers better than the original
I have always loved this version better!!! Makes me bang my head and my foot stomp... 😆 🤣
I've never been all that drawn to Spiderbait, but that song, when it first came out, it got me. Can definitely appreciate those drums!
Oh yeah! My son's favourite song and best version ever. Played at a lot of Aussie BMX events over many years. Brings back great memories. ❤❤
Australian Rock n Roll is and always has been the best on the planet !!! So consistent from the 70’s 80’s 90’s and still
That is his actual voice. The band is from Australia and have been together since 1991.
He is using a voice box to change it.... hahaha you actually thought its his voice!
Search for him singing Monday Morning on Rockwiz to hear his natural voice, he has a gorgeous voice
@@SuzyTrippa how does fuck off sound?

THE BEST VERSION!
Awesome band, they go off live, the crowd just pulses in time with the all time drummer. Listen to 'Old Man Sam' if you like them.

They are so good live!
So proud of this Aussie band 💯💥💫
Along with Living End and Spy vs Spy these guys put out the the biggest 3 piece sound in Aussie rock tbh
Plus the Living End.
Mark of Cain are the biggest sounding 3 piece Australia has produced
@@notbotheredableYeah good call, I can't believe they slipped my mind. edited
These guys were the live band to see in the 90s! Always a nuts show!
sure was. saw them a few times including homebake 95' in byron (before it was shit). all covered in mud, then all down to the pub.
brilliant loved it from an old rocker chick from Darlington uk
spiderbait black betty need for speed underground 2 BABY !
Awsome ,been waiting for this . Thank you.
If there’s one thing Australian rock bands do brilliantly, and that’s covers.
Best cover of this song! Great video!
They added a tinge of ZZ Top to their style for this one. Brilliant cover
Led Belly did the original Blues version in the early 1930's.
Ram Jam modernised the song in 1977.

Lead Belly not Led Belly.
Shit! Was this really released in 2004! No way! I can't be that old!
Starstruck did the 1973 version, later released by Ram Jam, (was the same guitarist who re-worked it)
Lol, this has been on my stay-list for a long time. MTV played this a lot back when it came out...was on Headbanger's Ball a good bit too.

This was used in a film sound track during a fight scene
Ram jam version for nostalgia
Spider bait version for running from cops.

guys this is so a funny sentence. travis talks about that it sounds like a banjo , and suzi said , defently a tiny guitar😄. I love it!
Anything that brings Spiderbait to the forefront is a good thing... The car is called Black Betty
Kram is amazing! Funny thing except for electric guitars this song has hardly changed since Leadbelly wrote it in the 19th century

Their song “Tonite” is really sweet!
This band goes off live
Susie is the most gorgeous woman on youtube... smile, makeup, hair... omg Travis you lucky SOB... damn she's so gorgeous
I smell a Wolf Hunter's cover where.. indeed the drummer races a car. 10/10 make it happen
I actually couldn't wait to see it. :-)
OMG this led me to the live version....check that out
You are the walrus, coooo-kooo-chaaaaa-chooooo!
It’s Kram’s car too called Black Betty.
Did you notice that the bas player is a chick (but she fulfils the role of of a rhythm guitarist in this three piece). She rocks and her sound rocks.
You really need to check out G Flip live when has Drum offs, or Proud Mary at Sydney Opera House,
Killer Drummer Singer and lots of other instruments.
It was actually a Chinese mandala in this song.

More Aussie brilliance. The episode of the Simpsons, where Bart learns the drums, they take off this clip
Do not listen to this song while driving if you don't want ticket.
This was made in Brisbane not far from where I lived back in the day

Ah yes a race ... RPMs v BPMs
Love Spiderbait, my favourite is shazam, with Awesome for a close 2nd

The 'little guitar' is a banjolele.

The banjo was not played. The sound if from the slide the guitarist is using
They beat the shit iiut of those drums 😂
Good ol Kram
The drummer was in the back of a ute when they filmed it UTE is a pick up over there
I cant remember if they said it was on a truck but yeah read that in Street Machine mag after the song/film clip came out
That little stringed instrument is called a banjolin , it’s like a cross between banjo and mandolin
Try Led Belly's version, vintage blues
The drummer is probably in the back of a table top UTE.
Have you reviewed Shazam by Spider bait ? It’s worth a listening to
Kram is a legend here
Love Kram ❤️
Their live version at Homebake is THE best...
