Not underrated at all. Anyone who knows who he was knows his amazing talent. Even jimi hendrix was quoted saying Roy was the best. In his time he was very very famous too. Even guest hosted to tonight show.
I could not agree more. He was one great entertainer and seemed to be loving what he was doing; not a "job" for him. Oh to be that happy in what one does for a living.
Roy was in a league of his own! God's gift to the guitar!! Banjo and fiddle. One of the greatest entertainers of all time. He's as much fun to watch as he is to listen too!!!
Was so excited to find this song being played by Roy Clark. It was my my fathers' favorite song. He loved hearing it played on a 12 string guitar. RIP Daddy.
When Elvis wanted to record Guitar Man, a song Jerry Reed wrote and played guitar on, nobody is Elvis' band could play the guitar parts, so they had Reed himself play.
I came of age in the era of Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, and Glen Campbell, all of whom were highly respected and well-known musicians. I don't think "underrated" is exactly the word that applies although none of these were as popular as Eddie van Halen, for example.
Damn... I love watching these videos Roy play and not just because he was an absolute killer guitarist. It’s also because you can see he just loved playing guitar even after all the years of playing. He looked like a little kid opening a present sometimes, like he had played something that had surprised himself. 👌🏼 awesome.
You now what Bill, you're right but he was one of the firsts to live & breathe the guitar. I'm a giant Mark Knofler and Vince Gill fan as well. Thx, Dj
That's ridiculous. Everything he chooses to play is just fundamental guitar exercises. He was a hick on Hee Haw, but that's about the best he ever did.
Stepson dad used to be able to do this song behind his back before Parkinsons disease took him down.he let me play his beautiful double neck red SG Gibson guitar once.i vow to have one one day I did get to see old Roy Clark, when I was a kid,at Ssix Flags St Louis.we were up close in front and loved it.miss old Roy
Love to hear under the double eagle Roy Clark plays that so beautiful he is a good guitarist . Years ago when my late husband was alive when we were younger we used to go or some friends of his Lenny and then we're playing in a band listen to him play a lot of western music that's first place I ever heard under the double eagle
Rest in peace and thank you for being a great part of my childhood and life. Dad played guitar and was a fan, also. Roy Clark is overall talent and entertainer.
I love how whenever he goes hard on a note he looks extremely worried but at the same time happy and reinvigorated when he gets it right. He has great energy
I love Roy Clark and Glenn Campbell. I would listen to Roys "when I was young" on our local country station every mornin before I rode 3 miles to school in 1969. But has anyone ever heard of Tommy Emmanual, yur lil cuz from downunder in Straya?? Chet atkins an Tommy did Magic shredding together in the 90s!! "In 1997, Emmanuel and Atkins recorded as a duo, releasing the album The Day Finger Pickers Took Over the World. It would be Atkins's last album, with the exception of "Solo Sessions" which Atkins' estate released posthumously. Emmanuel and Atkins appeared together on The Nashville Network's 'Country Christmas' in late 1997, and on that occasion, Atkins stated about him: "He is one of the greatest guitar players I've ever seen."
Atkins gave Emmanuel the guitar on which Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith recorded "Guitar Boogie", one of the foundation performances of the blues guitar world and a regular feature of Emmanuel's shows. Strangely, Rolling Stone Mags 100 Greatest Guitarists had Carlos Santana as no 20 and Chett as 21. WTF? They had Jimmy Page (3) Keith Richards (4) an Jeff Beck (5)!! Really, none of those 3 would hold a candle to Tommy Emmanuel, let alone Chett Atkins an Carlos Santana? Wow?
One day, God thought "What the world needs is the most kick ass musician ever .. I'll make him half me, half Benny Hill .. that would rock" .. and BOOM, there's Roy Clark
Paisley and Urban are little libtard amateurs. The best guitar players nowadays are in progressive rock and metal. In modern country music, it’s all on Billy Strings shoulders! Roy was the GOAT in country, no doubt about it.
@@ottomattix86 He is a guitar wizard, I have seen him in person multiple times and he is great. Keith Urban also, I just never realized Roy was this good!
as someone who attempts to play guitar I have the hardest time trying to watch Roy's fingers because his facial expressions are always so entertaining!
I love that crazy smile and look Roy Clark gets on his face when he plays... As though he's getting away with something he shouldn't be doing... Hey with guitar chops like that I can see why. Nobody should be that damn good (lol)
Those facial expressions.....Yeah, when you know you're THAT good, and you know everyone watching you also knows you're THAT good, you might just as well enjoy it. Thank you, Roy Clark, for sharing your amazing talent with the world!!!
I used to have the album Roy Clark Live and my favorite line on the entire album was when he introduced this song. He told us "This song is called 'Under the Double Eagle'. I simply call it 'Look Out Below'".
Im 54. Glad i witnessed this when i turned on the tube every saturday night.. Even when i was a teenager in the early 80's, he never left the list (in my mind) of the best overall musician i heard growing up..✌
My dad always used this tune as a measure of a gutarist's true ability. Whenever he saw anyone play guitar on TV, he'd say, "Not bad. But can he play 'Under the Double Eagle'?" :)
When I saw Willie Nelson in 1970 he opened his show by playing this tune. He was good, but no Roy of course, he was 100 % Willie, and that was good enough.
Magnificent videoclip of Roy Clark playing his guitar. While watching this video is a very enjoyable experience, nothing can be more enjoyable than watching his performances in person. I had the pleasure several years ago of watching his live performance at the Lynden Country Fair in Lynden, Washington, and nothing can beat watching his live outdoor performances.
What a talented entertainer was Roy Clark, a wonderful vocalist and fine guitarist who could front a band and play demanding tunes with ease (even though he pretends it is difficult).
My dad used to play this on an old f hole acoustic back in the 50’s when I was a boy. Sometimes he would put his harmonica in a neck piece and play them both at the same time. Brings a tear to my eyes now. Never truly appreciated my dad’s talent
This brings back memories of when I was young. My mother wanted her father's guitar, A Gibson Archtop. He told her when she could play Under the Double Eagle with him, she could have it. She practiced every day after school for 3 years! Played Under the Double Eagle with him on his banjo and by gosh, she got that Archtop Gibson when she was 13. Now, Grampa has been gone for almost 50 years. My Mom is in her 80's and I hope to get that guitar. I play Under the Double Eagle like mofo! lol
I saw Roy perform at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Obviously an amazing guitar picker. My brother-in-law, who was a pretty fair picker himself, thought the world of Roy Clark. R.I.P. to them both.🎸
As a kid playing my first C&W gigs, there was a little logger's bar that every Saturday night would break out in a barroom brawl. It was like watching Gunsmoke for me. We would always go into "Under the Double Eagle" until everyone dusted each other off and sat down to drink more beer. The older I get the funnier the memory.

I saw Roy play in the mid 80's. It was at a horse racing track and he and his band were playing on a trailer stage that the side folded up. I was of course right up front maybe 10 feet away. Wow what a showman. Unbelievable performance. There was an old many standing a few feet away and when he yelled something to Roy his teeth popped out. No guitarist has ever looked happier just doing what he or she does than this man. He is truly a legendary guitarist.

What luck you have!
Tim, speaking of nice guys, your dad was a prince! Played a lot of golf with him in the early 80s at Tulsa Country Club.
