As a puerto rican I feel super proud for you reviewing this band from PR. They were a salsa group composed from the best singers and musicians from another salsa groups. They made this group to tour around the world meanwhile each one of the keep composing music and recording their projects and albums. They have another big hit named "Quitate tu". Thanks for they great video! 😊
Hector Lavoe was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico and his influence was Chuito el de Bayamon. A singer that was known as an improviser. And Hector took that into his style.
The 'backup singers' were literally a constelation of some of the best salsa musicians and singers. Everyone in this band was and still are stars in their own right. Love the fania all stars, Johnny Pacheco and anyone that appreciates these masterpieces. ✌
I’m an Anglo-American who grew up learning Spanish, and I’m also a singer. It wasn’t until I was maybe 21 that I was exposed to salsa, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I became totally hooked and I’ve never looked back. Celia and Hector were two of my first idols in the music. Cosa Nuestra is one my favorite albums that he did with Willie Colón. Celia also did a few records with Willie. Their version of the Latin American classic “Cucurrucucú Paloma” is just spectacular. I would also highly encourage you to check some of the great Cuban singers such as Beny Moré...you can’t go wrong with Beny. He was kind of the Frank Sinatra of Cuba. Another great from recent years is Mayito Rivera. Check out a video of him singing “Soy todo”, with Los Van Van, probably the most popular post-revolution Cuban band. Seeing you experience this and the Celia video was such a delight. Seeing you tap into the joy for life that this music is all about is so wonderful, and it really brought me back to that moment when I first experienced that feeling, like your whole body is going to burst into flames....in the best possible way hahaha. Loved this video. Take care, my friend.

Something I found very nice from the band: they used french words. At 6:30 you can ear hector saying "chantez". That means sing. At the end of the song he also say "merci". It's very nice to hear singers making an effort to learn some words of your country. As a Frenchman I was shocked when I heard this ! Hector lavoe. Le chanteur des chanteurs! El cantante de los cantante!
Great review, I saw Hector live many times, the best Salsa singer in the history of the genre, incredible voice and a master of “soneo” the art of improvising, one that only a few Salsa singers can execute properly. Thx!

He was very close in our family... Yes I believe this is a tour they did overseas.... The history of Fania and all of these beautiful artists are magical.... While they were all a beautiful representation of different vibrant cultures, the common denominator was the love and passion for the art of music and the people!!! I WISH THERE WAS A LOVE BUTTON FOR THIS VIDEO! ❤️

You have so much variety on your channel. I want to thank you for including Latin music, like salsa, among the genres you review. Hector Lavoe is my favorite salsero. I have just subscribed!
That "call and response" u were talking about is actually improvisations... i believe in rap n hip hop they call this "freestyling"... in salsa, the singer will sing what is known as the "Introduction" of the song which in this case were the lyrics u read aloud... THATS where the message of the song is... then typically in the salsa genre comes a chorus which is the harmony u hear in the background of the other singers... the lead singer must showcase his improvisational skills filling in the gaps in between the chorus... the singer must continue to sing utilizing vocal skills (cant just talk like in rap n hip hop) whilst playing around with the timing and the rhythm of the improvisations (they sometimes start late after a small gap in their improvisations, sometimes they start early before the chorus is even done) all the while rhyming... its THIS skillset that separates a "SONERO or SONERA" from a mere singer or "CANTANTE"... now, the GREATEST soneros took it a step further and usually incorporate subliminal messages within their improvisations (it could b something romantic, something humorous, something patriotic or something political... its THIS particular skillset that separates a SONERO from a GREAT SONERO.... herein lies the essence and the beauty of r music and its greatest interpreters... it takes a special kind of singer to sing salsa... so, in closing, whenever u listen to salsa, and u hear the background singers singing that same chorus over and over and over again... and u hear the lead singer singing in between those chorus lines... that lead singer is actually improvising or freestyling... keep this in mind as u listen to the song and try and take in how long this goes on for... many times what that singer is saying is IN THE MOMENT, so as to prove to everyone that bears Witness that he is actually improvising or freestyling off the top of his head and not just repeating something he said a million times before... which is why he around the 4:45 mark give or take he mentions Pachecos grandmother....
Only for reference. In the salsa of the 60's and 70's singers like Hector Lavoe improvised between their songs. In this song "Mi Gente" there are several "versions" because every time he sang it he did different improvisations. It was very common for singers and choristers to improvise. There were even improvisation duels, as happened later in the 90's with rap and hip hop, of which Puerto Ricans are also part of the history of their creation. Minute 4:00 Minute 6:14 and Minute 8:37 are good examples.

@@carmenrivera7581 🙏🙏 I love this music
Andy you are a gentleman in all aspects👊
I'm a Cuatro player and 80% of all the music I listen to is salsa, so seeing Hector Lavoe show up on your channel made me happy.
Incredible talent and arguably one of the best Salsa music groups in history!
So happy you are keeping yo spread our singers who have made us beyond proud of being boricua!
Thank you for this video! This is my absolute favorite artist of all time. Tragic story but his music was really special and diverse.
Hector Lavoe is the King! All soul! Have you heard his interpretation of boleros? “De ti depende” is one of the best songs of all times for me.
