Not really a fair assessment. I generally dislike musicals, and did take a bit to warm up to this show. After watching the pilot, I was actually surprised it was a full on musical; I expected it would just be Charlie and Alastor doing the singing with everyone around them like, "wtf?" Then after the episode 4 break I binged Helluva Boss, accepted the fact that musicals can be good, and now I love both shows. Watching them cringe in their reaction after seeing the full series is definitely frustrating now that I know how good the show is, but honestly if I had watched this right after I watched episode 1 I probably would be agreeing with Dustin.

Watching these reactions have made me realize how many people actually have no idea that Lilith is an actual character, though mostly in jewish stories, she was the first woman made as Adam's equal. Both from the same earth. But she wasn't treated as equal so she left, and Adam asked god for a new, more suitable wife for him. So god made Eve from one of Adam's ribs, so that she may be more subserviant to him. Lilith became the mother of demons.

Someone around like 700AD wrote a dirty series of acrostic poems while pretending to be Ben Sirah (the writer of Ecclesiasticus/Sirach its part of the Deuterocanon from around 200 BC, and is not to be confused with Ecclesiastes).
It included stories like how the Sultan's daughter was cursed with perpetual flatulence, that Ben Sirah was Jeremiah's son and grandson because Jeremiah was forced by thugs to jerk off into a mikvah (a ritual bathing pool), and then his daughter took her ceremonial bath and got pregnant (one of the earlier pregnant from a toilet seat/hot tub stories, I think Snopes lists it as the oldest recorded).
And one story goes that God made Adam and Lilith and Lilith thought she should be Adam's equal and so should get to ride him cowgirl style some of the time. Adam didn't put up with that, so Lilith shouted the Tetragramaton in outrage and abandoned him, and she became a demonic entity like a succubus, while God made Eve from Adam.
It's a silly story explaining why Genesis 1 has God creating Man and Woman as equals, and then in Genesis 2 God makes man and then woman later as his subordinate.
Lilith is not actually in any of the actual lore. She was added sometime during or after the medieval period. She's basically an OC

Lilith is from Jewish mythos originally, but the story they use to introduce her is not the version of Lilith we grow up hearing of. In Jewish culture, Lilith is a succubus demon who preys on married men and causes illnesses in children and babies. She's PURE EVIL, and while I sort of like the 'feminist' version of the story, that's not the version we grow up hearing. I think looking at this as "baby's first R-rated cartoon" dismisses the whole thing as a shock-value show, when it is not really supposed to be. It's hard to have a show set in Hell that doesn't feature cursing, sex, and violence, so of course those things are going to be rampant, but it isn't all about aiming to gross us out or force a visceral reaction from us. The R-ratedness is not the point of the show, it's a byproduct of the setting and support for the actual themes. The charm comes from a sympathetic and likeable cast trying to better themselves in an environment that very much does not facilitate betterment. Or to put it non-pretentiously, it's digestibly funny and entertaining without being distractingly over-the-top in that regard, in my opinion anyway (I'm 26, was never a theater kid).
And on that note, the torture that takes place in this Hell isn't necessarily literal. Hell is basically the most dangerous and depressing aspects of Earth, dialed up to eleven and inescapable. Crime, murder, assault, inequality, etc are all unpoliced (sinners basically respawn if they're killed outside of exterminations), people are given free access to vices to drown themselves in and self-destruct, and everyone is convinced that it can never get any better. On paper maybe getting killed by Heaven would be considered an end to suffering, but realistically how many people would want to just stop existing? Death is scary, that's why the concept of even a shitty afterlife exists to begin with.
ALSO, I cannot stress this enough, this show is a musical! Two songs per episode, all of them plot-important. Personally I think they're all bangers, but if you don't like theatrical Broadway-style musical numbers, maybe this just isn't the show for you.

It’s just that There’s a group of purists who don’t count it and prefer to only see the original work as “canon”.

@@VendettaProduction01 You say 'canon' as if the version that you read now is the only version of the Lilith story. Stories change over the centuries, people have their own spin on things and sometimes when something does not fit their narrative and world view, they cut it out all together. Lilith was even included in the very early versions of the bible, but was edited out over the first few decades that the books were transcribed. And to emphasize another story that got changed a lot, Noah's arc. You know the current version, but the earlier Babylonian version that they literally found carved on a rock and is 700 years older than the one in current religious texts told the story of a merchant named Noah who had a god given vision of a flash flood, at which point he warned the town he lived in, and they lashed boats together, loaded them with people and animals, and wound up surviving the flood as it came down the valley. Quite a big change compared to a dude putting two of each animal on a boat and a flood wiping out the entire world. So as I said, stories change. Mythology is hard to put down to a 'canon'.

I think the difference is it isn't strictly trying to be shock humor, Hazbin Hotel (and basically anything Viv does) actually has a sincere core to it. Sure, it's hell, but the show isn't setting Charlie up to be humiliated for yucks. What she wants is an uphill battle, and it's meant to feel hopeless, or even pointless, because the question of whether damned souls can be redeemed is the whole thing she's trying to prove. She's a flat protagonist who is meant to withstand the blows dealt by the world around her as it bids her to despair and give up like they have. She's an optimist in a hopeless situation. It is a REAL, earnest arc to put her convictions to the test, believing in people even when they won't believe in themselves.
Viv can't help herself being a Wholesome-Heather, frankly. You're right, she's emulating what she understands to be naughty and hellish, which falls short, because ultimately... she just wants these characters to grow to love each other and achieve their happy ending. And I find that adorable.

This show is popular for its catchy music and endearing characters (i.e. Broadway Musical 101) not anything particularly edgy. Morgan seemed way more hung up on the word 'bukkake' than the show was. Just a lot of weird assumptions being thrown around for a first episode. And it's definitely not just for younger people. I mean, I'm 34 so not exactly Gen Alpha over here.
I do agree with Sean on the world-building though. One of my bigger complaints is we dont really know what happens when characters are killed/die in hell and that question is directly tied to the stakes of Charlie's mission. There's a throwaway line in the RUclips pilot where a character wonders about it and asks if there's a "double hell" but it's definitely left intentionally unclear.
Hell in the show is probably best compared to living in Gotham City. Yes you can exist and enjoy a bohemian lifestyle there, but violent crime is wildly common and more than a handful of super-powered psycopaths will eagerly fuck you up in their endless battle for control. It's a lot more living under extreme late stage capitalism than it is burning in a pit of lava, but it still generally sucks for the majority of people.

  • @HappyEggz
    @HappyEggz 8 месяцев назад +8

And as for the stakes? It's that a LOT more people are ending up in hell, its horribly overpopulated and a lot of people end up there for making well-meaning mistakes....and for Charlie, who was born and grew up in hell, she sees sinners as human souls, a lot of which who just made bad choices at some point and she feels they deserve a chance to redeem themselves if they want it instead of seeing them be erased from existence for no reason. Vivziepop sometimes does group interviews and in one she mentioned for Angeldust, he died via overdosing on drugs, he likely wasn't a pornstar while alive. I think its mentioned his family actually had some mafia connections, whether this means he murdered anyone while alive I'm not sure but suicide counts as a sin so he's likely there for that.
Alastor also died during the golden age of radio and was a both a radio host and part time serial killer while alive thus his apprehension toward technology like TVs.

What we don't see in this show is that this version of Hell has seven layers, or "rings" to it. Each one representing a different sin, and each being ruled over by a different demon lord. You can see what the other rings are like in this show's sister series "Helluva Boss", which focuses more on the Hellborn demons, while Hazbin Hotel focuses more on the sinners. The various rings, biomes, and standards of living make Hell feel less like a pit of damnation, and more like a whole planet, albeit a vertical one, where you take huge communal elevators between layers.

Christ, these are the most shallow takes I've seen on youtube yet. Yall are so hung up on the bukkake joke you missed the entire point of Hazbin's hell; It's the worst version of our reality, where selfishness and vices go unpunished and all its inhabitants torment each other just by existing. It seems all fun and raunchy on the surface, but as you indulge in your sins you feel worse and worse, and so does everyone else. And there's no escape except for an exorcist blade. People are literally getting eaten alive on the street!
It's a capitalistic hellscape where you still have to pay rent and go to work, putting up with all of the worst people who have ever lived and haven't died a second death yet who can and WILL try to exploit you. Forever. Drugs and sex offers a moment of euphoria only to bring you crashing down. Hell fuckin sucks and that's by design!

I don’t think their criticism is wrong. The rules are a little wonky and the show never really explains most of them. The show does want them to accept the premise so that it can tell its story. I think that’s mostly heavily lifted from the pilot and this is mostly a refocusing of the pilot to this seasons antagonists.
If they want to reject the premise it’s gonna not be their cup of tea and that’s okay. If they do accept the premise it’s a pretty good watch. They probably wouldn’t get interested until episode 4, and that’s an hour before they might decide it has some topics they might enjoy.
