  • The Mani Peninsula, Greece is amazing to explore. It is rugged, with awe inspiring coastline and Ancient Villages.
Areopoli and Gytheio are two of the larger towns on the edge of 'Deep Mani' on the Peninsula, 90 minutes South of Kalamata and about 4 hours drive from Athens. They are perfect as a comfortable base for exploring the deep Mani Peninsula.
Both offer contrasting options. Areopoli is an old, quaint and picturesque fortified town about 10 km from the Diros Caves on the western coast. Gytheio is a seaside port town and fishing village on the East coast, offering picturesque views over the sea.
Either-way, both offer the traveller a gateway to Mani, where you can explore the Gates of Hades, The most southerly point of Mainland Continental Europe, the Diros caves, The abandoned village of Vatheia, the Temple of Poseidon, or the Oracle of Death (Hypnos).
Ideally use a car to travel and explore the Mani Peninsula to see the most. Coach tours are available but will limit your opportunity and travellers should be aware, there is NO public transport on the Mani Peninsula.
If you wish to HIRE A CAR to Explore Greece I suggest you use a comparison site.

This video is so helpful. This early October I stayed in a hotel here (7:56) in the main street in Gythio. The room balcony faced the sea, every morning I opened the balcony door, I was like "WOW", super stunning. I always sat outside eating ice-cream next to the Gythio police station.🤣

It is beautiful, and I am glad you enjoyed my video, I plan to go back at some point and revisit in a little more detail.

Very nice video! We have been to Gytheio and stunning Mani. Only passed through Aeropoli. Will definitely visit again!

Interesting "off the beaten path" video. The stone buildings dominating Areopoli are unusual compared to most places I've seen in Greece. Definitely will want to make my way to Mani peninsula some day. Video quality is very good, despite the wind affecting the audio. Did you invest in fancy new gadgetry?

Agree, though I have videos coming of 'Deep' Mani, which is very 'off the beaten path' and I hope interesting. Certainly worth a visit, as long as you have a car, as you need your own transport. No new equipment, though I thank you, maybe I am getting better at video editing.....

The land of olive, a Greek TV show set in Mani I believe? For those who don’t know!

Thank you so much for this. I have spent so much time in Gytheio! My grandfather is from Petrina which is very close. Love the channel as well. Keep up the great work!

Thank you, It means a lot to me when someone who knows Greece far better than I doesn't dislike what I am doing, or saying!! I loved the whole Mani area, and plan to go and spend more time in Gytheio.

@@GreeceExplored Trust me, any person with a Greek background appreciates what you are doing here on youtube. If you are ever in the Sparti-Gytheio area again, stop by in Petrina. It is a very small village and has 1 main cafe/food area and they serve great stuff. Petrina also exports locally produced olive oil, you should give it a try!

Andrew, I loooove your videos with all the historical references and I've watched most of them so far (Yes, I live in Chalandri too !!).
I'm sure you know that the spelling is actually Areopoli, not Aeropoli.
Looking fwd to watching your next videos !!

Thank you, and yes, my mistake re. the spelling, I hadn't noticed. I will correct it!! Glad you enjoy my videos, I love local history, especially in Greece, my challenge is to try and get it largely right, which I don't always!!

@@GreeceExplored In fact Andrew, your videos also capture the colors of the sky and the nature in Greece so VERY accurately !!!!
Are you doing any color correction post-production or is it directly from your camcorder?
I have a Sony camcorder and the colors look awful....do you have any suggestions for me, please?

    • @GreeceExplored
      @GreeceExplored  Год назад +1

@@giwrgospa No colour correction, although I had to play with the exposure in the Diros Caves. I am using an Iphone 12 with a gimbal... I have looked at other solutions but the Iphone stabilised seems to work well. I am considering getting a separate microphone, and would love to move to 4k, but I need to see how and where the channel goes before I spend serious money on it...

@@GreeceExplored I can't have you traveling around the UK to satisfy my curiosity. I lived in Plymouth for several years and I love both Devon and Cornwall. So if you find your way down south I wouldn't mind a small vid.
