with a stride length of 25 feet {versus 20 feet for most race horses} , averaging 37.7 mph in each triple crown race [setting records in all three}, and a larger heart actually in physical size than most horses. He is the horse of the century and it was a privilege to have seen him race.

both Seabiscuit and Secretariat had huge hearts. the average thoroughbreds heart weight is 8 lbs. biscuits was 14 lbs and Sec’s was 22 lbs. so biscuits heart was nearly twice the size and Sec’s was nearly 3 times the size. so in a long distance run, sec would obviously beat anything on four legs as he could pump more oxygen into every muscle of his body than any other race horse that existed. this is why his record at the Belmont of 2:24 still stands and will never be broken. now as for speed biscuit was built to be a sprinter. he once fell behind as he stumbled at the gate and was so angry that he actually ran a quarter mile to catch up faster than the quarter horses of his time and the speed he ran it could not be broken by any quarter or distance race horse even to this day. when biscuit got angry he was astounding. both biscuit and sec had huge hearts. sec’s was monstrous and may never be seen again. so in a long distance race sec would win but coming down to the stretch in a shorter distance competition, biscuit would fly past him as he was built to be a sprinter. George Wolf said that Seabiscuit was built like a tank, the most muscular horse he ever rode. both of these legends were super intelligent horses.

@@johnbougae8314 I am partial to viewing Secretariat as the greatest of all time, but -- times can be deeply misleading. Man o'War, who set more records than Secretariat, almost always won under a strong hold; only once was he seriously challenged. Man o'War wore heavier (steel vs aluminum) shoes than Secretariat did. Man o'War did not run on tracks that were nearly as fast as today's. Man o'War carried a lot more weight than Secretariat did in his races. This is not human bias: those are plain facts. And aside from all that, I suspect you'd be surprised at how many track and even world records have been set by obscure horses. Winning against top horses impresses me more than setting fast times, an attitude more typical of European racing fans than of an American, which I am.
Times lie in other ways. Comparing times at the same distance on different tracks is always problematic (though I've done it), or even on the same track on different days. Heck, conditions can vary enormously on a track from race to race on a given day. And even within a specific race, the trip any specific horse gets can make a lot of difference in their time and the results of the race. The careers of both MoW and Secretariat are proof of that. Man o'War's sole loss was the result of a horrendous start; and Secretariat's fourth place finish in his maiden was due to being slammed between horses out of the gate and then impeded in the stretch. Man o'War was clearly the best horse in the Sanford, and Secretariat was clearly the best horse in his maiden.
My knock against Man o'War (and also Ruffian, and to a somewhat lesser degree, Zenyatta) is that he did not run against particularly strong competition. He never met Exterminator, the next greatest horse active in the U.S. during his time; and he met Sir Barton, an excellent horse, on the wrong day. Sir Barton reportedly lost all four shoes in that match race. Secretariat met and defeated the best horses on dirt and turf active in North America at the time, with the exception of the European filly Dahlia, who came to the U.S. in November of 1973.
I rank Secretariat first. But I wouldn't be shocked, were it possible, if Man o'War -- or Frankel or Seattle Slew or Dr. Fager or Citation or some other horses -- could consistently beat him at certain distances/surfaces. (Seabiscuit, though, is not one of those other horses. A great horse, but he is not in the running for top 10 of U.S. horses, much less greatest of all time.)

Every one talks about the Belmont rightfully as it was the greatest destruction of fellow horses ever.
But in the short Preakness were Secretariat broke slow he put it into a gear that I’ve never seen from a horse and blew past everyone creating a track record despite the poor start that still stands.

Hard to compare horses from two different eras. Yes, Secretariat's times were about three seconds better at Pimlico than Seabiscuit's (during the match race). But Seabiscuit was almost two years older. Secretariat also had the advantage of better nutrition, better dental care, and better pharmacology. Thoroughbreds today do take steroids to maintain their muscle mass. Plus there is just no way of knowing what Seabiscuit would have done when he got a good look at Secretariat. The Biscuit ran hard enough to beat War Admiral. What would he have done if Secretariat had been standing there?

Its impossible to ever tell, some horses just like some humans are very competitive. Seabiscuit was a horse that was very competitive, he ran against the other horses in the race and Secretariat was a horse that could run against the clock. My meaning is that would Seabiscuit run harder against a Secretariat if he was in the field with him and the answer would be an undoubtably yes. And would Secretariat have anything more to give if he had a horse that could challenge him, we will never know because he never had a race that was close. Seabiscuit was said to run with his ears up (forward) and look to his side at the horse challenging him and then just shift gears and leave them behind. I have had horses like that that just seem to play with other horses working as hard as they can, and then just look back and kick dirt in thier face, and look to be laughing as they race away from them. The point I am making is that competitive horses only run against what shows up to run and if they are not that great they still win but just dont have to put out the extra effort because the competition isnt there. The movie Seabiscuit actually tells the story of the great horse War Admiral running against him and his jock telling people that he held him back so War Admiral could be brought up to challenge him stride for stride then said he was to let him go and watch what he will do. He was right,

Seabiscuit WINS! The Preakness, Kentucky Derby and Belmont tracks all played much quicker in the 1970s than they did in the 1930s, with much improved and quicker grounds conditioning. Secretariat's triple crown times average a little over 4 seconds faster than fellow triple crown winner, War Admiral. Seabiscuit defeated War Admiral by over 4 lengths and led wire to wire, in their match race. He also had one of the largest recorded jockeys riding him. Seabiscuit was also widely known to play up and down to his competition. Even track, even jockeys, one on one...Seabiscuit wins, with a heart 3 times the size of an average horse.

Greatness is best measured in adversity overcome. Secretariat had the unfair advantage of an enlarged heart, was not undersized, did not have physically defective knees, did not have to run close to 90 races, was not trained to intentionally lose the first half of his career, was not physically abused, did not carry the same imposts and lived in a more advanced era of edicine and training. Seabiscuit didn’t have any of those luxuries and still dominated. All of his by-a-nose losses were due to being blatantly fouled or his jockey hiding partial blindness. He smashed multiple records, travelled excessively and came back from a career ending injury... and I’ll give you one more... Seabiscuit’s fastest half-mile time, 44 1/5 in the middle of an endurance race at Santa Anita, is FASTER than Secretariat’s fastest half-mile time of 46 1/5 at Belmont in 1973. At the end of that same race, Seabiscuit did the impossibly by accelerating to race the final opponent to the wire... he had freakish speed, endurance and a refusal to quit. If it came down to 10 match races, I would wager Seabiscuit winning at least some of them and dying in the process. Secretariat had an anatomically oversized heart, Seabiscuit had a metaphorically oversized heart. That makes them the two greatest in my opinion.

both Seabiscuit and Secretariat had huge hearts. the average thoroughbreds heart weight is 8 lbs. biscuits was 14 lbs and Sec’s was 22 lbs. so biscuits heart was nearly twice the size and Sec’s was nearly 3 times the size. so in a long distance run, sec would obviously beat anything on four legs as he could pump more oxygen into every muscle of his body than any other race horse that existed. this is why his record at the Belmont of 2:24 still stands and will never be broken. now as for speed biscuit was built to be a sprinter. he once fell behind as he stumbled at the gate and was so angry that he actually ran a quarter mile to catch up faster than the quarter horses of his time and the speed he ran it could not be broken by any quarter or distance race horse even to this day. when biscuit got angry he was astounding. both biscuit and sec had huge hearts. sec’s was monstrous and may never be seen again. so in a long distance race sec would win but coming down to the stretch in a shorter distance competition, biscuit would fly past him as he was built to be a sprinter. George Wolf said that Seabiscuit was built like a tank, the most muscular horse he ever rode. both of these legends were super intelligent horses.

Defeated a Triple Crown winner? Since only one TC winner (Justify) has retired undefeated, and only Justify and Count Fleet remained unbeaten after the Belmont (due to not having run any races after the Belmont) lots of horses have beaten Triple Crown winners. Exceller beat 2 Triple Crown winners, Affirmed and Seattle Slew, in the 1978 Jockey Club Gold Cup. Assault lost a total of 24 races, Whirlaway a total of 28, so it's a good bet plenty of those losses came after the Triple Crown.
Secretariat lost 2 times after the Triple Crown, American Pharoah once post TC, Seattle Slew 3 times, Affirmed 5 times. Citation, ranked one of the greatest Triple Crown winners, lost 12 races after the Triple Crown. Two of War Admiral's 5 losses came after the Triple Crown.

I have a different view - I think Seabiscuit could have beaten Secretariat. It seems from the stories of Seabiscuit he was intentionally held back until such time that he would see the competing horse. That was a problem in terms of achieving the best times - a big problem. He had training issues early on and needed to run that way. Had he been trained better, especially during his early years, this issue might not of held him back from running at his full potential - meaning he would have not hesitated to run full out at all times, as did all other race horses. At least that's my theory. Any thoughts on this?

      Jason hi.
I trained as a jockey prior a major accident. I have generations of jockeys in my family including two cousins now. I worked with thoroughbreds for a large chunk of my life.
Secretariot was and is clearly the fastest horse known throughout history. It may have been a medical anomaly because he had a oversized heart. "around double the normal size". The point is even 47 years later the belmont race times are all nearly identical and even throughout its hundred plus year history. Except Secretariots race time wich is still over 30 lengths faster. 30 lengths is a remarkable difference.
Like i said search all history. Even in ancient history. There is no horse recorded faster. We had a miracle. A absolute miracle and you can actually see it on video. And you can deny it? Sir i must admit you are a different kind of silly.
Jason call any major horse stable in idk Kentucky. Talk to the trainer making a million dollars a year. Ask that person if there was a horse throughout all history they ever heard of faster than Secretariot. Secretariot is a Majestic Figure to Horsemen worth there salt. I still tear up watching the Belmont.
In short to watch a horse in both the Kentucky and Preakness come from dead last and win both is nuts. To understand in the Preakness Secretariot was not only dead last but set even still today the fastest time on that race. Then win the Belmont by 31 lengths and you reject this horses Majesty? And you can watch it live on film? And that doesn't even count the fact that in the Preakness the second fastest time ever was by Sham in the same race. Jason you are just plain out retarded im afraid.

@@theaubad1006 Nope, I agree with the vast majority of racing experts and historians, Man O' War was the greatest of all time and it's not even close. When he retired, he had more Track records, American records, and World records than Secretariat when he went to stud. The AP, ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Blood Horse, and many other publications voted Man O' War over Secretariat for Horse of the Century. I challenge all of your trainers opinions. Secretariat only has one record that still on the books. Kelso still has a more impressive 2 mile record that still stands to this day and he broke the record in 1964. Secretariats heart was not unusual for the day, Sham's was also twice the size of the average Thoroughbreds heart. Why? Well, Hall of Fame Trainer Elliott Burch said that Steroids became known in Horse Racing in the 60's and was rampant by the 70's, which easily explains Secretariats, Sham's, and other horses enlarged hearts. It also explains Secretariats issues at stud until he was cycled off of his Steroids use. Sports Illustrated wrote an article about Secretariats issues in the early 80's. Sham was Secretariats only competition, look at the race results of Secretariats competition, not very impressive. Man O' War didn't just beat the previous years triple crown winner Sir Barton, he destroyed him. Sir Barton had just set a World Record only three weeks prior to their race. Man O' War was by far the greatest, all without any possibility of Steroid use. Man O' War was bigger, had more muscle mass, and faster than the second and wannabe Big Red.

Jason obviously you never worked in the thoroughbred horse industry. That opinion is like saying flat earthers are the majority. Man o war was a great horse indeed. Not as fast by records as Secretariot.
I and my family are generations of professional jockeys. I think i might understand horse racing better than you do. Saying you dont care what the top thoroughbred horse trainers and jockeys professional opinion is. Is ignorant and just shows you intellectually in a bad light.
Its your opinion and i respect that. But its not a majority opinion in any stretch by the people who work everyday with these animals. Who specialize in this very sport, animal care, and handling.

Indy who won the 1992 Belmont Stakes, the great grandfather of Rags To Riches who won the 2007 Belmont Stakes and he is related to the 2 most recent Triple Crown Winners American Pharaoh and Justify, so tell me what has Seabiscuit done that Secretariat hasn't? My uncle couldn't say another word.

there is the fact that seabicuit broke his leg but still raced

Seabiscuit did *not* "break" a leg, which in normal parlance means a fracture. He did break down, however. He ruptured a suspensory ligament, a soft tissue injury which is not life-threatening but is often career- ending.

Knowing a little bit about horses there's a lot of things you have to take it's a consideration and knowing what I know that would be too close to call do I think Seabiscuit would have won the Belmont in 73 probably not but then again I'm not sure that

Personally, I think this video is wrong on so many levels! True, they were 2 different types of horses. Secretariat was built! "Big Red", had thick cannon bones, a huge heart which made him metabolize oxygen more efficiently. His numbers have not been beaten in 44 years! Seabiscuit had shorter legs, a shorter neck. He couldn't have had the stride that Secretariat had. However, I know that most people thought that Seabiscuit was a dud in the beginning. He did show them! OK, my favorite was Secretariat. We all have favorites, we have to give credit when credit is due. Seabiscuit was a fine horse, Secretariat was an American Icon!

Secretariat was 16.2 hands high, War Admiral was 15.2 hands and Seabiscuit was also 15.2. Secretariat and War Admiral were both Triple Crown winners, but Seabiscuit beat War Admiral in a match race. There was another amazing time when Seattle Slew became the Triple Crown winner to be dethroned just the very next year, however in 1978 at the Marlboro Cup, he beat Affirmed who was the new Triple Crown winner.

I think they were trying to show that they were the type of horse that could come from behind and win.
