    The stylus is certainly making a difference. I did some jumping about the video comparing the Banpa stylus between the Ymiko and the Banpa cart and it is very similar though the Ymiko is a less dynamic sound. The Banpa cart with it's own stylus is still the better overall combo. Interesting also that the close up shots of the stylus show the ymiko stylus as being very badly cut which defo isn't helping much. Another great video :)

      Yes, the Ymiko does seem inferior to the Banpa all around, though I agree that the Ymiko cartridge sounds almost (but not quite) as good as the Banpa when they are using the same stylus. Thanks 😀 👍

    That was interesting 😆 In truth, yes it was interesting, I listened to it blind, whilst doing some editing on my own project. I didn't notice any difference. I listened again, whilst actually watching your video, there was a noticeable difference when the screen told me you had changed the cartridge. Must be psychological 😁

      Yes, it is interesting how much the human ear/brain compensates for differences in sound quality. I think before video and video editing it must have been virtually impossible to properly compare this sort of stuff without having 2 complete sets of kit. Thanks 😀 👍

    Ymiko cartridge + Banpa stylus sounds clearer to me! How did you change the stylus, is it easy to do?

      Thanks 😀 👍. Yes it's easy to change the stylus. There is a little metal spring clip underneath which it just pushes under

    I think the Bampa stylus offered a cleaner sound than the Ymiko stylus. I couldn't tell much difference from the BSR. Although in the close up shot it looked quite worn compared to the others. Thanks for the video.

      Thanks 😀 👍. The BSR stylus should have been new, I have used the 78 side a little but I think this was the first time I had used the LP side 🤔. I thought the Ymiko stylus looked poor under the microscope, and it is interesting that swapping the styli around did help. I am still inclined to believe the Banpa cartridge itself is slightly better, but the Ymiko cartridge (if not the stylus) is good enough at least for some uses 😉

    You should also test on the BSR Astatic cartridge too. This might show which is better. The two cartridges there were both tinny one more than the other sounded cheap.

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  Год назад

      Yes, that would be a good test, though unfortunately I don't have a BSR cartridge to hand. I don't think either cheap flip cartridge is great though improvements in the amplification of the signal would also help as my setups are very basic. Thanks 😀 👍

    That Ymiko really benefited from the Banpa stylus. It's hard to tell which sounds better between the Banpa and BSR stylus because the BSR part is lower and I don't know if it's because you have it lower or because it has lower output.
    The Ymiko with the Ymiko stylus doesn't sound good at all.

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  3 года назад

      The Ymiko stylus is not much good. All the recordings were done through the same USB turntable direct to the computer so the output levels should be comparable. I think I actually prefer the Banpa stylus over the BSR one! 🤔. Thanks 😀 👍

      @@mrrgstuff : The BSR stylus (your's is not an original NOS (New Old Stock) part actually...) sounds much better if you try it in the Banpa cartridge.
      well, to me it sounds better anyway! I'm using it in a Bush Classic floor-standing unit which has plenty of bass...
      I have one of those Banpa cartridges, and it was 'OK' with it's original stylus, but I got an original NOS BSR replacement, and the improvement in sound quality was very noticeable! Smoother treble, good clean mids - vocals, and better definition in the bass. Using the 78 side really cleaned-up playing those old 78rpm records and the background noise was dramatically reduced. :-)

      The BSR stylus was bought a couple of years ago just after I got the Banpas - but I can't remember if it specifically said it was NOS or not. I'm fairly sure it was sold as a BSR one though, however I have nothing to compare it to. 🤔 It does seem to be a better quality one than either the Banpa or the Ymiko - and at least has a suitable sized 78 stylus. I did look a few weeks ago for another one - but most of the styli which came up looked to be Banpa style ones - and weren't much cheaper than the Banpa cartridge itself! I will have another look though as I could do with another one with a decent 78 stylus. The Ymiko stylus has a very suspect LP tip - but this may be a one off. Thanks 👍😀

    The ymiko stylus is off quite a bit. The ymiko cartridge sounds a lot like the other with the same stylus. I’d like to hear a bsr head to head with the two cartridges. Speaking of the bsr the 78 stylus is actually the correct size. The other two do have it wrong which is a shame. Another great video!

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  3 года назад +1

      Thanks 😀 👍. Yes, the Ymiko stylus doesn't seem to be as good as the Banpa one. I also thought the BSR stylus might have made more difference than it did. Good point about the size of the 78 stylus. I had heard the Banpa one wasn't the right size. I am not surprised the Ymiko is equally wrong. I have another cheap 78 stylus in my radiogram and I suspect it is the same which will be frustrating considering it was sold specifically for 78 use. 🤨. I don't have a suitable BSR cartridge to compare against, but will see what I can do 😀

    Which one is best overall for 78s and LP?

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  Год назад

      I don't think there is much between the Banpa and Ymiko cartridges. The styli are OK for LP, but not so good for 78s. A proper BSR stylus would be better if you can find one.
