Beautiful movie!!! I can identify with your childhood I also had to leave my country as a child. You touched my heart. I cried the last half of the movie.

While I like Van Morrison's music, I can't help but find it to be ironic that he stayed away and did not play Belfast during The Troubles. Rory Gallagher, however, was the ONE musician who repeatedly performed there during those very dangerous times - while bombs were going off around the city. Year after year he returned for Christmastime concerts . His music and those performances at Ulster Hall (where he played more than any other performer) are legendary and brought people together. All that being said, I am going to see this film tomorrow and look forward to a wonderful experience.

That's interesting - that's nice to hear about Rory G. Van M is as you know an oddball, likely he was not on the island of Ireland for most of that time.

it wasnt safe, so i admire anyone who risked it and commend anyone who chose to avoid it. You only have to look at what happened to Fran o'toole and the Miami Showband in the mid-70s

Morrison was very much against the sectarian violence and made no secret that he was. He didn't want to go back to Belfast because he was disappointed in the people who he grew up with who had become militantly protestant. Rory Gallagher may have been born close to Northern Ireland but he grew up in Cork. He didn't have the same connection to it that Morrison did. Gallagher was a deep feeling guy who wanted to endorse his believes in a place that needed it. Morrison had too much connection to the place and I can understand why he didn't want to go back.

Van Morrison went to NY in 1967, well before The Troubles had begun. His solo career was still on the launching pad in 1969. Honestly, VM was still playing high school auditoriums in the USA. Imho, this is a non-issue in his case.

What I find awesome about this is how he cast Irish actors and engaged crew who were from Northern Ireland (most from Belfast). Even for roles like the one Colin Morgan played. Definitely I'm sure hoping that they will tap into their feelings for their history and ancestry

Lovely movie, although I find some reviews excessive, it's anyway something many people can related to, even without being Irish or having been through the Troubles. I think many people of a certain age, had the chance and were almost forced to look back, like Branagh did.

I just watched the movie. The kid was the best thing about it. I think it started good but at the end it felt slow.
