Mr. Top Hat, have you considered doing a video on Sakura Kusagano? She's been a great character to not only grow over the SF titles, but was a great crossover character in Rival Schools and even Marvel vs Street fighter!
In Brasil there is a legend of the “Curupira” which is the monster of the Brazilian forest, which was a green with red hair, I thought that’s what might of inspired the character.. but I guess it was a coincidence
@@DonYoGi8331 Latín America has many stories of supernatural beings in the mystical woods ... Llorona in Mexico, Ziguanava em Central America, mapiguari in Colombia ... And the curupira was something my grandfather told me when we went hunting in the forest ...

Blanka is one unique character in Street Fighter. Fast and unpredictable in his fighting style and one of the pioneers of bat crazy characters in fighting games.
Back in the early 2000s, there were quite a few memes in Brazil about electing Blanka as the president. Hey Big Daddy Top Hat, the next one definitely should be a wrestler - Zangief, Haggar, Mika...
Blanka has a fascinating journey. The beast man is unforgettable. Plus Laura (eventually her brother too) joining the tourney, gives Blanka more friends. Amazing to see how much growth he gained over time. Would love to see you cover Rose next. She is mysterious, and fascinating
Hello.;) First of all, I would like to say that I am Brazilian and a Blanka fan since its debut in '' Street Fighter 2 '', in 1991. And I would like to add LOTS of information about the character, that the community on the internet it seems that you do not know or little research. 1- In fact, even though there are boring and olemic trolls who complain about Blanka being green or monstrous, the vast majority of Brazilians see no problem with the character. I, for example, have always loved the fact that Blanka is the most different from the Street Fighter fighters. I've always liked monster and mutant heroes, like kaijuu, Ninja Turtles, Hulk, The Thing, so I don't see a problem in terms of a Brazilian mutant hero. 2- Contrary to what many think, the research, creation of the Blanka concept and other details in its history demonstrate many connections with Brazilian folklore legends. Blanka resembles beings from the local indigenous imagination, such as Mapinguari; Caipora; Curupira; the god of thunder Tupã; Lobisomem (a brazilian werewolf); etc. In addition to Brazilian elements, it is also possible to perceive things coming from other characters of the world culture: Blanka has physical similarities and powers that refer to Goku from '' Dragon Ball '' (the sparkling yellowish energized battle aura); the electrical power of the King Kong of Toho (Kaijuu Kong) which, when facing the atomic breath of Godzilla, resembles Blanka's confrontation with Ryu; The Incredible Hulk (of course); etc. And before I forget and a troll appears, Blanka was not inspired by Sonic or Pikachu. Because '' Street Fighter 2 '' debuted in the arcades a few months BEFORE '' Sonic '' on Sega Genesis-Mega Drive. And YEARS BEFORE '' Pokemon '' was created. 3- Regarding his transformation: what was said in the video is about the INITIAL ideas of how he became green or gained electrical powers. But, it is NOT Blanka's true canonical story. In fact, Blanka mutated when he was infected by the rare (and fictional) virus known as the '' B-Virus ''. This virus contaminates several species of animals, jumping from host to host, copying genes and depositing them in the following hosts. This forces the victims of the virus to mutate, as it combines the DNA of the current victim with the previous victims. If the hostess survives the infection and the mutation (which may take years to materialize), this being will perhaps become a chimera. Example: If the B-virus contaminates an alligator and then contaminates a jaguar ... this jaguar will mutate and, if it survives, it will become a half-jaguar and half-alligator monster. If the B-virus of this jaguar-alligator infects a monkey, it is possible that this monkey will become a third jaguar and a third alligator. And so on. Blanka was contaminated several times and received the DNA of several animals of the Brazilian fauna of the Amazon jungle. Blanka has flexible joints and great constriction force like an anaconda; it has the power to change color, camouflaging itself with the environment, like a chameleon; produce and manipulate electricity at the muscular level, like an electric eel; it has the ferocity and claws and fangs of a jaguar; besides the agility and ability to climb monkeys; or the power to become compact as a sphere, just like the armadillo. This uncle of a living mutant and chimera is called, at Capcom, the '' Animal Hybrid ''. And Blanka is not the only one to fall victim to this virus: The Central American Missing I.Q (King Rasta) fighter and character in Capcom's wrestling franchise was also infected and won monkey genes. In the same way that the accompanying monkey has gained human genes. Thus, the fighter became as strong and agile as a monkey ... but, his mind regressed to an animalistic state. While the monkey became intelligent and its agent. There are other characters that have become animal hybrids, either unintentionally or through purposeful genetic modification. These are usually villains or are controlled by evil organizations, in games like '' Captain Commando '' and even in '' Strider 2 '' (the official arcade version). 4- Correcting information in the video: Blanka did NOT meet Dan Hibiki in '' Street Fighter Alpha 3 ''. Blanka knew him years before the history of these games, when Dan got lost in the Amazon jungle. He was looking for Master Oro, with the intention that he would teach him the secrets of Senjutsu in order to face and kill Sagat, avenging his father. However, he got lost and was found by Blanka. What gave rise to the great friendship of both. 5- Blanka was a 9 or 10-year-old boy who survived the plane crash that killed his father. This '' accident '' was caused by the Psycho Drive cannon from Shadaloo's secret base hidden in the Brazilian Amazon. In the jungle, after the disaster, the shock almost completely lost his memory. And the animals initially adopted him. As in the stories of Tarzan, Mowgli and even in real stories. After his mutation ends and he becomes a legend in the jungle, he comes to know Dan Hibiki, who teaches him to speak again. Teach you some words in Japanese and English. It is Dan who discovers that the nickname '' Jimmy '' (Jaime or James) is written on his anklet and is the first to give him the idea of participating in a '' World Warrior-Street Fighter '' championship. The two end up missing each other when Blanka is called by him to return to civilization in search of his family, through the fight, which would attract a lot of attention. Before that, Blanka had already had contact with indigenous and riverside communities. But, he ends up accidentally going to the big city, years later, when he falls asleep in a truck full of watermelons. In the city, he ends up getting involved in many problems and struggles. Until he meets Dan Hibiki in "Street Fighter Alpha 3" and meets the fighter Sakura. Both become great friends and love watching Japanese superhero series tokusatsu, as it happens in Brazil. Upon returning to the Amazon, Blanka finally has a meeting with the villains of Shadaloo, of whom he has always heard about the indigenous people. He defeats Zangieff (who thought he was a monster created by Shadaloo), defeats Balrog, the boxer, but loses in a confrontation against Vega, the boss of the organization. Vega finds it very interesting that the mutant's body can generate, manipulate and save so much energy and decides to take it to the base, with the intention of studying its DNA and creating clones to transfer its mind and power to. But, the research reveals that the mutation was random, caused by the B-Virus and none of the attempts in the laboratory would be able to repeat the same mutation that created Blanka. Since he is one of the few who can maintain the human mind about his animalistic nature, yet decades later, Shadaloo's scientific arm would originate Umbrella and Blanka's studies would provide satisfactory data in the creation of biological weapons or '' Biohazards 'when a much more aggressive variant than the B-Virus was discovered: the T-Virus. What started the events of '' Resident Evil ''. Blanka is brainwashed. He even fights in cages against Zangieff. He was kept prisoner and abused by Killer Bee (Cammy) who knows the code word to control or enrage Blanka. Until, at some point at the end of the plot of '' Street Fighter Alha 3 '' and the beginning of '' Street Fighter 2 '', Blanka managed to break free or was released. As revenge, or poetic justice, Blanka uses an electrical overload to destroy the sycho Cannon cannon, which killed her father. And, the rest of the story, everyone knows. ;) Remembering that Blanka got several friends and, during the events of '' Street Fighter 3 '' (which take place after Street 4 and 5) Jimmy became a co-owner of a restaurant with Ed. Honda and Zangieff.

one reason why a lot of brazilians love blanka is that he is very similar to a creature of brazilian folklore named curupira: a man with fiery orange/red hair and green skin that lives in the amazon rainforest. the main difference is that curupira is a guardian of the forest and has his feet turned backwards
Back in the day my local mall had an arcade and it had street fighter alpha 3. I put one quarter in and picked blanka. Won a few matches against the cpu and then a few people challenged me. Doing a character piece on the design changes for Hot Ryu in SF5 could be interesting. I'm curious about the motives behind their design choices beyond it just being time for an update.
Great work on the videos. It helped me to learn a backstories of characters from a game series I spent a lot of my life playing keep up with all the great work
First character I ever fought against! When saw Blanka, knew that Street Fighter II was something different. This wasn’t a Karate fighter or normal martial artist, but something very different!
first time I saw street fighter 2 was at China town in a small arcade...I had to play as blanka when I saw him. i had no clue what i was doing and some kid destroyed me. an awesome 30 second experience.
In my elementary school, there was a very believable rumor that Blanka was raised by electric eels in the amazon, or ate an exclusive diet of electric eels. These two rumors caused a lot of debate. You were either part of the eel diet camp, or eel parents camp.
I always thought of Blanka as an electric eel and human hybrid. My favorite version of Blanka is the classic SF2 look. He was feral and looked mean until they made him a goofball in the later series.
This is the part I complain about most. He was always depicted as a badass in the 90s. Not just in the videos game, but in the anime where he kills zangief, the commercials, and in the animated series as well. He didn’t become goofy until alpha, and yoshinori Ono took over smh. It irks me!!
Dude. Where did you get that origin story? I heard something completely different. After the plane crash in which he was the only survivor, he had to constantly camouflage himself to keep safe from wild animals at night. After doing so for so long, his skin changed appearance. And he ate mostly electric eels, which gave him his electric abilities. I'm not sure if that's right, but I've never heard your story
One thing that always bugged me (and probably nobody else) is how Blanka was such a yellowish green color in his original appearance but instantly changed to a dark forest green instead in every other incarnation (art for SF II, comics, animation, and later games). I hate the dark green. I like the yellowish green. In fact, when I first saw Blanka, I wondered "Who is that yellow monster?" I never thought he was green when I first saw him. It was only when other people kept calling him green that I was like, "Okay, I *guess* he's a *little* bit green-ish". OTOH, I was never that attached to Blanka, so it doesn't really matter to me.
He actually WAS yellow in Hyper Fighting as one of his alternates. I guess I can see how he might look yellow in World Warrior when fighting, but there's no denying his greenness in the post-fight taunt screens, which I think is what cements it for most.
Not being as knowledgeable of Street Fighter, I always found it strange that Blanka could speak so normally and not like a caveman. This video cleared that all up for me!
Chun-Li next! Also I love the affection Blanka receives in Brazil, I remember watching a Video Games Live performance of a few SF2 tracks, and when footage of Blanka appears on screen the crowd starts cheering for him.
We love Blanka in Brazil! Just a great honor to be one of the locations in the biggest fighting game of all time! Street Fighter 2. About the Health Minister, that one was not the worst... search for Pazuello ... LOL
You didnt mention "the amazon" from nintendos pro wrestling. He was super popular in that game, and his influence on blanka is clear, especially in his bite attack.
Actually, according to Blanka's bio in the 30th anniversary collection, he got his electrical powers from "taking a dip with an electric eel, the reason he was on the plane was to visit his uncle who lived in Brazil.
I met a super dear friend at my college arcade. I was playing SF2 and the guy behind me gave me a quarter to play as Blanka, his fav. That was back in 1993, and we still get together (except during this cursed Koof) and he still loves Blanka.
Yes, Brazilians love Blanka. The reason is that he was our first representative. Other countries doesn't have a representative at all, but we have! Of course Laura is a way more realistic and interesting character, but Blanka was the first one, and his inspiration can be traced back to the Brazilian legends of Curupira, the protector of the forest. PS: concerning Sean, he doesn't look like a Brazilian. I mean, he plays basketball not football. His name is not a common name, unlike Laura. Although he's an interesting character, he's not ... Brazilian
I have this fond memory; when I was a kid I played this high school guy at the local arcade and beat him in front of his girlfriend using blanka. It was my first time playing , but I had watched a lot of people play him so I knew his moves. Good times .
You knew his moves just from watching.. and you embarrassed a guy in front of his girlfriend.. did the whole place start clapping for you? I don’t believe this for a second
@@kenhammscousin4716 naww, that is a true story. I was the other kid who lost to andrew. That day my girlfriend and I broke up 😥. I should’ve chosen Ryu as a player and use his hadoken to keep him far 🤔

I was also there, it was amazing!! Sadly, every time I get a new girlfriend he steals her away with his Blanka mastery. Now I cry every time someone mentions street fighter.
Blanka makes a cameo in Street Fighter vs X-Men, he is seen in the background in the desert stage along with X-Men's Beast, but he disapears when Nash is fighting in said stage... Coincidence? I think not!
I thought he got the electricity from electric eels . In super Nintendo sf2 manual it says so. But on other websites it says he got it from a lighting bolt that hit the plane.
SF2 (champ ed) is one of the few 1 on 1 fighting games I love playing ever since it was released. Never got comfortable fighting with or against Blanka, though...
It's funny how in the Japanese version M. Bison was the boxer and was supposed to be called Mike Tyson but could not afford Mike Tyson's name. The more you know.
Wasnt the boxer supposed to be called Mike Byson, but at that time, Mike Tyson was facing some heavy charges for child molestation and rape, so because of that, capcom decided to cut all ties with him????
Balrog was the spanish ninja, Vega was the tyrannical psycho bent on world domination in the japanese versions. M. Bison made so much sense being the M. Tyson lookalike. It's a shame they had to change it for the western world. Gouki also changed to Akuma and Nash became Charlie.

I love Blanka. Got me hooked on SF2 in 1992 and into fighting games period.
Same here!!!!
I can still hear my best friends little brother yelling "STOP BITING MY HEAD!" "WAaaaaaaaa"
Most wholesome background, nice. He was ususally my first pick when I played on SF2 in the arcades when it FIRST came out.
I love fact that it only shows him jump kicking and got sweeping while he describes his unique attack
Cool story bruh...
Really enjoyed it 😁🙌
As a Brazilian guy, I love Blanka! He's one of the funniest characters in Street Fighter! I love how he became Sakura (♥️) & Dan's friend!
Are there lots of people like Blanka in Brazil?
@@psplayer1344 Claro, quase todo brazileiro é verde da choque e mora na Amazonia, no Rio de janeiro ou em São Paulo.
Blanka was the reason I become a Street Fighter fan as a kid. He looked so cool on the SNES box art.
Do Alex next.
Yes!!!! That’s the reason why I became a fan as well. Had it not been for him, I probably wouldn’t like the game as much as I did.
first time I saw street fighter 2 was at China town in a small arcade...I had to play as blanka when I saw him. i had no clue what i was doing and some kid destroyed me. an awesome 30 second experience.
Blanka has some really interesting and unique alternate costimes in IV and V. You should cover some of those as you go through this series.
Keep em coming!!!
This was really cool! I had no clue about qny of this story, thanks dude!!
Thanks for all the hard work that goes into researching and editing everything in this video. Thank you very much, brother. Keep them coming!!!
Same here!!
One thing that always bugged me (and probably nobody else) is how Blanka was such a yellowish green color in his original appearance but instantly changed to a dark forest green instead in every other incarnation (art for SF II, comics, animation, and later games). I hate the dark green. I like the yellowish green.
In fact, when I first saw Blanka, I wondered "Who is that yellow monster?"
I never thought he was green when I first saw him.
Blanka has such an interesting history!
If they had ever made a Street Fighter movie back in the 70's, Lou Ferrigno would have been the perfect choice as Blanka!
No he wouldn't. Blanka needs to be athletic and acrobatic. Ferrigno was to big and muscular.
@@Crazyoldman84 Yes he would be. The actor playing Blanka wouldn’t be acrobatic anyway. That’s what the stuntmen are for.
I always thought he was Charlie. Untill Charlie was playable.
Edit: spoke too early, didn't think you was going to mention that.
He was in the live action movie and in the animated series.
I still like the idea of Blanka & Charlie as the same person..i watched the Van Damme / Raul Julia movie a lot & the 95 animated series
I remember the original Super nes booklet for Street Fighter 2 said that Blanka obtained his electric power from living with electric eels.
I was a teen when this game was released and I IMMEDIATELY chose him as my guy.
Very cool video. Keep them coming!
Not being as knowledgeable of Street Fighter, I always found it strange that Blanka could speak so normally and not like a caveman. This video cleared that all up for me!
You earned a sub sir!
nice video man! I would love to see you do my favorite street fighter character of all time, Yun & Yang.
I've never seen so many jump kicks in one video before
Thank you dearly for adding the laugh at 11:23
Wow, I definitely have a new respect for Blanka lol I would like to request E. Honda for the next one
Yup. Edmond Honda should be next!
LOL
Went to high school with this dude. He was the only one of us they'd sell cigarettes to. He was voted "Most electric personality"
Friggin love Blanka! Always my go to fighter as my main over a shoto- man fighter any day!❤
Take a shot for every time Blanka does a jump kick 😅🥃
dude.. i want to live..
You didnt mention "the amazon" from nintendos pro wrestling. He was super popular in that game, and his influence on blanka is clear, especially in his bite attack.
I don't see the influence, The Amazon was pretty much a humanoid fish.
Blanka- starting the urban legend that Brazillians can conduct electricity and blend into jungle settings.
I missed the Akuma video; I need to go back and watch it.
Thanks now I want a whole gallon of sunny delight to myself
Top Hat Gaming Man Awesome man can you do more of these with mortal kombat characters in future ?
Blanka was the Pikachu of Street Fighter
I got my picture taken with Ono and that damn doll is in it...guess he does take it everywhere.
Wouldn't be Ono without Branka-Chan.
Actually, according to Blanka's bio in the 30th anniversary collection, he got his electrical powers from "taking a dip with an electric eel, the reason he was on the plane was to visit his uncle who lived in Brazil.
This is what I remember as well
Great vid!
Another top notch watch!
Bloody brilliant! Informative , speculative and amusing as always.
Keep up the good work fella and stay safe.
I met a super dear friend at my college arcade. I was playing SF2 and the guy behind me gave me a quarter to play as Blanka, his fav. That was back in 1993, and we still get together (except during this cursed Koof) and he still loves Blanka.
Such an interesting character
The beast with a heart of gold.
Brazilian
Blanka is my favorite character in Street Fighter, is that strange?
The way I see, Blanka is the real deal with electricity and all !!! 👍👍👍
you got yourself a sub just by calling out the cowards hacks in western video game journalism
As a fellow Brit, I'd like you to do an episode on Dudley! Also, I'd like to see a fight between you and Whang :)
@PC Principal didn't say great said he was a fellow Brit and I happen to have the chap that he's based on twice
He was my favorite! We have the same birthday. 🤓
Asking the questions I never knewI needed answered.
I should’ve chosen Ryu as a player and use his hadoken to keep him far 🤔
i was there that day. he not only embarrassed this man but he also took my mother home and made love to her. he is now my step father. we now have a strict "no gaming" rule in our home
@@osio7528 tou were there too… remember? U member??
I was also there, it was amazing!! Sadly, every time I get a new girlfriend he steals her away with his Blanka mastery. Now I cry every time someone mentions street fighter.
Love his spin attack
Blanka makes a cameo in Street Fighter vs X-Men, he is seen in the background in the desert stage along with X-Men's Beast, but he disapears when Nash is fighting in said stage...
Coincidence? I think not!
This dude looks like Vasilly Lomachenko.
Love the content!
wowww.... amazing how you made everything up.
My favorite Street Fighter character of all time! 👹⚡
I thought he got the electricity from electric eels . In super Nintendo sf2 manual it says so. But on other websites it says he got it from a lighting bolt that hit the plane.
Blanka is my favorite! He's so hot! Thank you for doing this video. I appreciate all the extra information on him.
SF2 (champ ed) is one of the few 1 on 1 fighting games I love playing ever since it was released.
Never got comfortable fighting with or against Blanka, though...
Do a documentary on Yun and Yang.
Blanka is incredible. I like playing street fighter 2 as Blanka because his moves are so unusual.
My favorite Street Fighter character. Yeeeaah!
@@andyquinn3996 You could be entirely correct on that one. I'm sure Top hat will make a video soon enough setting the record straight.
@@andyquinn3996 no,In the 1st Street fighter The boxer is only called Mike and it was before the allegations...reason they switched his name is because they wanted to avoid law suits
@@igorivanov299 exactly in Guy's SF4 ending he even calls Bison by the name Vega if you use the Japanese language setting.
have a drink every time he does a jumping in kick attack, i dare you
He Looks like a Native Folklore legend of Curupira or Caipora.
To me Blanka always looked heavily inspired by Tiger Mask II (anime) villain Bronze Muscle...
First character I used because he looked like an awesome beast😏
