You may study a lot and become a great scholar, but if you can't subdue your own mind, what's the point? The best thing is to control your mind and not follow your thoughts and emotions. You might decide not to get distracted by outer appearances and to control your afflicting emotions, but this won't happen by itself. It's something you have to train in with great diligence for a long time.
So always watch your mind, be careful not to follow your negative emotions, and constantly maintain your practice. Especially in places where there is a lot of trouble going on, it's much more difficult to tame your mind. If you can control your mind in such situations, you will not easily be affected by troublesome circumstances.
