I love what this combo does to the sound.. adds so much class, crystal clarity, depth and detail. Can`t wait to order the 54 too and the release of 55, which will add some other incredible features Adrien said!
Interesting trick with the volume knob on the 1951. Its between tube stages so you can lower the volume and get more of a saturated sound by pushing bass at 69 and tops at 28K which gives an almost flat response due to the width of the bands. Also the coloreq color knob is changing the impedance as well so thats part of that darkening sound. Not just parallel. The Thermionic Swift sounds great in that 1951 slot on the back with a pair of XLR phase reversal units on the output of the Swift. Very cool stuff.
Very nice behaviour-I like the ability to say more or less Eq. Also more pop, more Sade sound, or completely decrease the high end while retaining nice musical integrity.
Great review - thank you. The 1951 / 54 do sound amazing together! The aircap is the elusive fairy dust - highs without harshness. Agreed, the varishelf is a tricky concept at first, unique and very useful though - being able to instantly return to a bell to check any potential harm with a switch is so cool! ;)
@rhodrimorgan3799 plugin doctor gave me a really good insight into what it was doing. It's interesting how you can add a bell and a shelf at the same time. Which works really well using the colour EQ in mid side.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio That's great to know - will explore. It's reassuring to hear what I hear from my 51 / 54 during your demo - they are fabulous EQ's. :
You probably already know but they don’t particularly like to much gain. I had to get used to lowering the input by a lot. Something to keep in mind for those that have a hardwired setup. Great EQ’s!
@HOUSEARREST1 I probably have different input and output transformers to you. Mine are quite special builds with different input and output transformers. Do you have 2 big blue transformers sticking out the back of yours?
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Not sure about the colour, will have to check that. They are the vintage ones for sure. I know Adrien updated or gives the option for a more modern approach. I personally like the way they sound as is. Just need to be very careful with input gain, pretty easy to hear when they fall apart especially when used as a whole system. What transformers did you got? Lundall
Unfortunately not much stepped knobs. Really wondering if this can fit my Mastering sessions. Looks for me like a shelving tool à la Kush but on steroids. Maybe I am wrong and I should give a try.
@Carlos-Rodrigues the knobs are heavily detented. Recall is simple. Only knob that isn't is the aircap for obvious reasons if you look at what the aircap is inside.

Stunning. Ordered both. Thank you for another excellent video!
Paul, These 2 sound so good together. Excellent video. I always look forward to your videos!!
@braxal6983 even when I was watching it back when editing, I was really impressed with how it sounded.
Pure magic 1951+1954✨ thanks for sharing this review 🙏🫶
@@HoneyB_kyoto yeah really is magic
Wow what a crazy cool equalizer 😋

They sound amazing. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on converters and clipping as well as what clock you use etc?
@ssalecats I use Burl converters for all my mastering chains. They've become part of our sound. I'm not a fan of clipping converters personally.
Do you use the Burl ADC as the clock?
@@ssalecats the Avid MTRX manages my clock

@HOUSEARREST1 I had Carnhill output transformers added with some ultra rare sescom American input transformers.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Nice! Do you know which Sescoms?
@@TeeDubz I would need to lift the lid and check.
How would you prefer to optimize M/S processing by combining the 1951/54 with a gemini?
@@BR-gi1qi yes when I used it in mid side I used it with the SPL Gemini. Worked great this way.

Hi thanks for the review. Can you do a review of the Cranborne HE2 please?
@rectape I posted a review on the Carnaby HE2 some time ago on this channel. It is in the Audio Equipment Reviews playlist
@@AudioAnimalsStudio ok thanks. Do you still love it?
@@rectape of course. It's a brilliantly unique EQ unlike anything else in the chain. Has a purpose in most masters.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Wow that's a great testimony. Will try it for sure. Thanks
