    The other great thing about those filters is that they stop water ingress from very heavy rain into the snorkel and wetting the paper air filter in the box, this is more prevalent during heavy rains on long trips or during the wet season up north.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  3 года назад

      For sure, just another benefit to these units.
      I am yet to take this filter off as it has been incredibly effective at removing dirt and debris prior to entering the airbox

    Great way to reduce the risk of dusting the engine. I had a close call when I drove Victoria Rock Rd and the Woodlines in my 200 recently with the stock Armax ram head. Ended up with a lot of dust and debris in the air box, a small amount got around the Ryco filter. Fortunately didn’t do any damage. I’ve gone back to an OEM filter and grease the top side of the filter seal now. Might ditch the oiled foam ram head cover I bought at the show for one of these.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  4 года назад

      Yeah, these 200 series love letting that around the filter. I have stuck with the OEM air filter as well and added a foam strip along the bottom lip of the airbox to increase the clamping pressure. This seems to work well at this stage. I'll try and do a review on this down the track.

      Yip, I hear you ditched the oil type air filter on my jeep 4.0. use silicone paste to seal the factory filter in.
      I like the idea of cyclonic snorkel heads. Fitted a conventional cyclonic head like on a Landrover, CFM was way to low, and I don't have the ability to run a larger one.
      So I fitted a ram head, put some aluminium fly screen mesh behind the plastic grill. Never had any water or dust enter, even after very dusty conditions.
      I was very surprised, but hey it works.

    Air Speed in the pre cleaner is the key to success. I‘m still investigating on details. Midrange engine rpm let’s say 2000 rpm what will be the cfm air flow ? V8 on Full rpm cfm airflow ?. The pre cleaner head max capacity could me a tat smaller in my opinion since I will never travel with max Engine rpm on a dusty road. So see your data’s and compare. Cheers

    • @dustyfarmer
      @dustyfarmer 3 года назад

      My Donaldson H002045 works correctly at idle, I think the cyclonic action may increase with airflow over the vanes at speed, certainly picks up swarms of bugs when I drive through them.

    • @dustyfarmer
      @dustyfarmer 3 года назад

      @DropDstar There are only two Donaldson cyclonic units for the 4" intake pipe.
      Only one is correct for the CFM of the Toyota V8 diesel engine. The larger one is correct.

    • @dustyfarmer
      @dustyfarmer 3 года назад +1

      Airspeed is increased as the vehicle travels down the road up to highway speed. I pull plenty of dust, bugs & crap out of the air into the bowl that would otherwise find their way to the paper filter.
      Donaldson's cyclonic pre-filter work really well.

    • @dustyfarmer
      @dustyfarmer 3 года назад

      @DropDstar B.S... The smaller 4" will starve the engine for air.

    • @dustyfarmer
      @dustyfarmer 3 года назад

      @DropDstar Pigs, look it up on the Donaldson CFM calculator or ring them if your no good at maths which is clearly the case. 4.5L V8 @ 4000RPM needs the 660CFM pre-cleaner, the smaller one is only rated to half that flow at max.

      Thanks Brett, I'm glad you enjoy the channel. To be honest, no particular reason I choose this unit, other than speaking with other 200 series owners who run the same model. I see the 2045 is bigger and has a higher CFM which definitely would not go astray on the VDJ200. Maybe one day, I'll have to do a comparison. All the best, Nathan.

    @ Brett.. facts: Rayco air filter seal is not so high then original Toyota filter rubber seal. So why risk for 10.- AUD ? Grease on a to small seal does not works. Just measure the height of the seal seat in both covers vs the double lip seal, you will see size of the overlapping is large enough. Does any photo from the original plastic box show dust ingress near the 4 clips ? I have not seen any! Mostly mid section you would find dust on the seal inside. For my understanding there are 2 failure possible. 1. the lower plastic box buckles to inside. 2. 4 clamps insufficient!?! You can may guess how to try to solve the 2 problems. Cheers

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  2 года назад +1

      Cheers mate, so it depends on the vehicle and snorkel you are putting it onto. If you are fitting it to a 4" ARMAX snorkel like my vehicle then part number H000858 fits well, however if not, then you will need to measure the diameter of the snorkel and try and find a unit that best matches. I know there are some gaps in the product line up, however you can source reduces to make them suitable for a larger range of snorkels.
      Cheers, Nathan.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  4 года назад

      Another way to assist for sure. My only concerns with oil based filters is the potential for oil vapour to build up within the intake and potential cause a reduction of flow in the filter material. This is another reason I choose not to use an oil based panel filter in the air box, so to avoid any risk of oil vapour contaminating the MAF sensor.

    • @200seriesgxadventures6
      @200seriesgxadventures6 4 года назад

      @@XploringOz I have run the Unifilter pre cleaner as well as the panel filter for well over 12 months inc 2 trips along the Gibb River Rd and the Tanami without any issues, yes there is more maintenance but after using the normal panel filters for similar trips I would never go back, don't believe what people say re oiled filters. I'd say that those who say there are issues with the oiled filters/pre cleaners don't use them or have not properly maintained them correctly. MAF sensor issue is a mute point, if you have that much oil on your filter that it has an affect on it they must have not followed the instructions or, have not used them.

      @DropDstar not sure if you're familiar with the type of oiled air filter that is commonly used (Unifilter) but unless you've installed it incorrectly (upside down) you'll never "suck it into the motor "

    • @emcaccoc3
      @emcaccoc3 3 года назад +1

      Tests using ISO 5011 standards has proven oiled media such as Uni and K&N are the least capable type of filter letting the most contaminates through. Paper filters capture more contaminates, and cyclonic precleaners such as those from Enginaire, Sy-klone, Donaldson, and others are just as or more efficient as oiled media, but don't need any servicing while extending paper filter life up to 10 times longer.

      Inevitably it would overflow between the air take fins and splash into the snorkel intake, but that would take some time to fill up, wouldn’t happy quickly. I can see the bowl from the drivers seat and it would only take 20seconds to empty.

    • @carlosvo312

      XploringOz If I do not base the tank with water, it may go to the air filter?

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  4 года назад +1

      The water shouldn’t get into the filter material itself, especially if the air box is kept standard from factory. The factory air box has a small vortex at the entrance (similar to that of the pre-filter) which would attempt to seperate and eject the water, prior to collecting in the box. If water were to get it, theoretically it should pool at the bottom and should be sucked up and into the air filter.

  • @DiHandley
    @DiHandley 4 года назад

    The plain and simple facts are that the engine sucks way more air than one of those ram heads is supposed to collect.
    The ram heads also catch a lot of rain, bugs and dust that the cyclonic prefilter eliminates.
    They are literally worth their weight in gold (no reference to the previous post).

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  4 года назад

      For sure. Like I said, I haven’t noticed any change on performance. Using a little more recently has only reassured my confidence that this item is very valuable for those wanting cleaner air into their intake 👍

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  2 года назад

      I guess this is something I can address in a future review episode, however as you mention the airbox itself would be a variable in the testing that wouldn't be a direct result of the effect of this product.
      I'm still using this filter years on and it's still picking up plenty of dirt and debris 👍
