He was a beautiful person. He called me after i posted this, and he called me, a total stranger, and we chatted for almost an hour. It was one of my favourite experiences of my life.
This is fantastic! Reminds me of the kind of programs I would accidentally encounter flicking through late at night and then wondering afterwards what did I just watch…!
Amazing. Just stumbled across this and I’m pretty sure it’s the first time I’d encountered Be jam in Zephania, having seen it when it was first broadcast on the BBC
Benjamin Zephaniah’s ‘The Dread Poets Society about Lord Byron & other Romantics. Co-written by David Stafford in 1992. in the programme, Benjamin Zephaniah is traveling by train from Birmingham to Cambridge to receive his Creative Arts Fellowship, sharing a carriage with a racist and philistine car spares salesman played by Timothy Spall; by chance the poets Keats, Byron, Shelley and writer Mary Shelley are transported from a séance they are conducting in The Villa Como by a freak electrical storm. A battle of wits, drug taking and poetry performance ensues! Directed by Andy Wilson. Cast: Alan Cumming ... Shelley; Emma Fielding... Mary Shelley; Dexter Fletcher... Keats; Alex Jennings... Byron; Produced by Estelle Daniel; George Faber - executive producer; Music by Roger Jackson. Film Editing by John Mayes. Second Unit Director (AD) Chris Ballantyne ... first AD. Camera and Electrical Department; David Bushell ... lighting director ruclips.net/video/SOr0-iDE8dY/видео.html
Shelley and Mary Shelley would have got on so well with Benjamin Zephaniah: all vegetarian (vegan - the Pythagorean diet), both anarchists! Byron would have liked his revolutionary politics, too 😊
Thank you so much for sharing this! I remember seeing it when it was first broadcast on BBC and I’ve loved it ever since, but not seen it! A very young Alan Cumming and Dexter Fletcher, superb casting!
The best thing from sharing this was it lead to a call from the man himself. In the middle of work i got a call from Benjamin Zephaniah and we chatted for half an hour about thatcher and the 80s and everyth8ng else. Easily one of my favourite moments in life (although i am easily pleased).
The turkey's have lost their Champion Christmas just wont be the same so be kind to your turkey this christmas and remember darling Shane...............One Love❤
I was 16 when I first watched this in 1992. I'd seen Benjamin Zephaniah on Pebble Mill or something like that, but this was my proper introduction to him. I've often thought about it, and wished I'd had the foresight to tape it... Thank you for having that foresight!... I feel like I've been struck by lightning and transported back to 92!...
1987 ; it says so at the end in roman numerals - the norm for UK TV programs the year is also cited in the program text itself Zephaniah did become a university don eventually - around the early 1990s
Yosiane - me know this to be true because ye olde mighty, birth me pon the world in 1990, named me max among-rel cats, and as a wanna be MC, MCMXC is where my name be at, biatch!
Thanks for upload_ no problem with sound ...In his book 'Life And Rhymes' Zephaniah states incorrectly(?) this was made for Channel 4..and confirms it hasnt been repeated..He rather exaggerates saying 'It was a big hit, and people talked about it for years afterwards' (!)
He might have remembered that onewrong.. pretty sure Screenplay was BBC thing (IMDb thinks so too). Either way I remember when I first posted this, Zephaniah called me and we chatted for over half hour about Thatcher and everything. It was long time ago but i think at the time he'd forgotten about it somewhat and was really pleased it might get a bit more exposure. Definitely proud of it and he should be. As a kid, I thought it was one of the craziest cool dramas I'd ever seen. I dunno about other people but it stuck in my head for years and I always loved to talk about it. Watching it again now and it's just as cool 😀
@@danskkr That's good he contacted you, he's an interesting guy. I can see why he got the Channel mixed up ,as the experimental style & political stance are very much like the programmes that Channel 4 used to make..( but the BBC 'Pebble Mill' logo at the end of credits clearly shows otherwise).

At least you could afford to get a train with British Rail

Haha, my father was actually rather fond of him.

Zephaniah did become a university don eventually - around the early 1990s
If I'm not mistaken, MCMXCII is 1992, not 1987.
True that, it certainly is.
