    Tom I'm so inspired by your advice to really let our own creativity shine through in improvising pop songs rather than robotically tapping out a sheet music arrangement. Like many I had a youth dalliance with piano lessons and one of the reasons I gave it up for decades was thinking "what's the point, I'm just replicating a player piano." Your brilliant insight and challenge to learn the basic chord structures and then play all sorts of variations is wonderful, as is your call to just play and sing. After all, it's OUR musical journey and we're not playing for anyone but ourselves. Thank you!

    Thanks Tom. A simple song by the Beatles but not so easy to play as you demonstrated at the end. Your tips are very useful to me and definitely gives me something to work with.

    In a way, I am so glad I didn’t have a teacher like this growing up. I never would have gone into medicine. 😂

      Medicine- it’s easy compared to music. It’s just a trade.
      I am also a doctor. There is no brain power involved.

    How come what you are playing is different to the score?
    Is there a tutorial on the whole piece the way you play it?
    This may help us as a structure to build our our own improvisation on, using other tutorials you have filmed

      Hi James you need to watch our other tutorials on Pop Music! In Pop Music you should NEVER play what's on the sheet music. Why is that ? Because the original artist never wrote it down on sheet music. It's all about the chords ! Start with this one, it will really help you figure out where you are up to. ruclips.net/video/7mMuB4GaLgc/видео.htmlsi=0YmAQry1x0TiZb9G

    Is it correct playing em in the chorus? It sounds more as G major to me but maybe because these 2 chords are so related. Am I right or wrong in this?

    • @contemporaryschoolofpiano
      @contemporaryschoolofpiano  Год назад +1

      Actually, it's neither G major or E minor, it's an (almost hybrid of the two) Cmaj7/G - but Em is a good way to teach this first, esp in context of studying the self arrangement skills in this video.

    This is excellent but it doesn’t quite sound like the Beatles version. Something different on the downbeats? I don’t know enough to better explain it

    • @contemporaryschoolofpiano
      @contemporaryschoolofpiano  Год назад +1

      I don't think it would ever sound like the Beatles with a solo piano, no bass player, no drum fills, guitars/backing, and no vocals, A solo piano is a different animal. It requires translation, and often, for certain songs, the translation will lead to something feeling quite different. I'm often very choosy as to which pop songs I play on the piano, as some don't work as solo pieces, so do, some partially do. Let it be, though from the educational viewpoint is a gold standard choice! A great progression of diatonic chords.

    in the Chorus , Em doesnt sound right , i think it is a G

  • @leoknut8901
    @leoknut8901 Год назад

    Wrong voising. In the chorus, the second chord should be in G major, not E minor.

    • @contemporaryschoolofpiano
      @contemporaryschoolofpiano  Год назад +13

      Actually, in the original recording, it's neither a Gmajor nor an E minor but a Cmaj7/G - (which has the notes E G B in it) so for a solo piano arrangement, I took the view that E minor is a better voicing for intermediate players as it avoids the parallel 8ves of the Am to G. What you have to consider is that Pop Music is fluid, when you are arranging it for piano from the band, you have to make modifications. So taking a binary view (right and wrong chords) will bring no benefit to your playing. You have to look beyond into greater realms of musical possibilities.
