Farmer's Almanac states April 21st for our avg last frost, we've had frost all week, and even this morning, we had a FREEZE from 3am-9. So I will still wait until May 15 since that was our avg last frost for YEARS! Almost a whole month change is an unreliable notion. Just because we went from 6b to 7a doesn't mean a whole world difference. I'm going with what I know.
The backyard orchard looks great. I have a few of the same trees, but in pots because I don't have the space to plant them permanently (yet, hopefully).
Have been growing avocado and grapes. Two very healthy peach trees a fig tree a watermelon patch a cantaloupe patch and vegetable garden. I'm trying to get my strawberry garden done. I'm needing a bit of advice on fertilization amounts in different soils and from trees to garden vegetables
I have a south facing hill about 25 x 60 that I'm thinking of putting a small orchard on in zone 7a. Is it a good idea to intersperse evergreen bushes/shrubs (something like little giant arborvitae) so that the winter landscape won't just be dormant deciduous fruit trees and bushes?
How invasive do the root systems get with those trees, will they eventually damage your foundation or any pipes that may be near? I had planted a couple fig trees many years ago too close to my garage and the root system did some significant damage, It cost me a fortune to fix it before I sold the place.
fruit trees generally have pretty shallow roots. Anywhere at least 4' away from the foundation is ok IF you keep the tree a small size like I'm doing here with aggressive pruning
You guys should be heating up fast. I was sleeping in a swag at 1100 mtrs ( 3800ft) last few nights, and I was cold. Hope your fruit trees power on ! My neighbours had a mango tree. It was so small and sorry looking. I cared for it for 2 years and the following year it had over 20 mango’s. They were so good.
it'll work with standard rootstock. Semi dwarf and dwarf really don't stay THAT much smaller than standard tbh, you may just prune slightly more aggressively
Do you know how bad it is that I didn’t prune when I planted my trees last week? We have property 4 hrs away and we only had time to finish the fence and get 17 trees in the ground. I’m worried about them not being able to put enough energy into the roots. I can try to prune next time I go out there but I don’t want to mess them up if they started growing too much. We did standard spacing, so maybe it’s ok since I don’t want to keep them small.
They'll be fine. If you're ok with them getting full-sized, you don't need to prune when planting. You can take a bit off the top to encourage growth, though, if you want.
Starks bros is overpriced. Shop local stores for better deals, potted trees, and being able to pick the tree structure you want. I have purchased 6 trees from Starks Bros, 3 died. Used their warranty claim once and the replacement tree died after paying another $16 or something in shipping. So 4 out of 7 trees from them died. I have gotten potted trees from local nurseries, Lowes, and Walmart and they have all lived, and at cheaper prices than Starks. I wont be doing business with them again. Otherwise, good video.
To each their own. I and other members of my family have planted well over 50 trees from stark over the last 20 years. There’s rarely been an issue and when there was we found their customer service to be very helpful in offering replacement. Sorry that hasn’t been the case for you.
How exciting! Can't wait to watch as they grow! 👏
So much potential in those little trunks!!

Exactly, last frost dates can be so unpredictable

Lots of trees do well in containers! I just grabbed some citrus for the greenhouse I’ll keep in pots

Sounds like the mango tree was lucky you came along!
Keep the pledge trained by quiet
Can we do this with standard fruit trees ? Or does this only work for semi dwarf and dwarf trees?

That was traumatic to watch! Plants are so much tougher than you'd think.
It was traumatic to do 🤣
Thanks for the tips!
Your starkbros link isn't clickable for me, is there an alternate?
Hey! The Stark Bros link should be fixed now :)
I couldn't see clearly but did you really plant the root flare several inches below grade?
Kayleee

Looks like you got a good answer here already!

Why you paint the trees???
to help shade their trunks a bit from the hot sun
It’s sunscreen! All natural latex free
