I have a rescue cattle dog. I got her from a shelter when she was 4 years old. She was a special needs dog and I was in special need for a companion (after a life changing event) and we were perfect for each other! She is now 12 years old. I have been making her dog food now for over a year and my only regret is that I didn’t start sooner! I too make a chicken vegi mix for her and wouldn’t you know it, tomorrow is dog food day! I’ll try the shredding the way you did, it should be perfect! Thank you Ali, I LOVE what I’ve learned from you! (I’m a 70 year old constant learner!!)
you can it the same way as for people food, meats 90 min (qts) 75 min (pints). I've done that before only I put too much rice in the mix and it blew the lids off all the jars. Don't do that. It sounded pretty knarly and scary inside the canner. We fled the kitchen. 🤣😂 My dog's name is Bella and she's a rescue and 40 lbs.
My new dog was a gift from my son, who couldn’t keep him on Base because he was too vocal, lol. He’s an 8 month old Chocolate Labrador. His name is Maverick (from Top Gun). He’s very sweet but very active. I had lost my Service Dog to health issues and Maverick is hopefully going to be able to be trained to replace him. He has a very sensitive stomach and we also have to watch his water intake because he gulps so fast that he will vomit from getting too much air in his tummy. We have gone through several types of dog food with him. Maybe this would help. Thanks so much for sharing your dog food recipe. 😊
I have a pitbull I’m madly in love with. She is Ruby Tuesday and turned 10 years old in July. I am going to try this. Sounds cheaper than dog food is now too. Thank you for sharing.
Not quite 7 and a bit pound Maltese whose birthday is in five days he will be 8 years old. His name is Cooper, but he got the nickname Mini Cooper at PetSmart doggie day camp because there was another Cooper who was a Great Dane. He has an allergy to chicken, but when I'm in the dehydrator, he's right there to get the droppings.. usually dehydrating veggies for his treats
I have a 10 yr old 90 lb shepherd/cattle dog mix. He is a K9 garbage disposal, nothing will be refused. A few months ago our elderly (now deceased) girl was having issues with food, so I decided to change up her typical kibble/canned food diet to a more unprocessed food. It kept her going for a bit, but I since it worked so well for her I decided to keep the boy on it. I give him a cup of quality kibble, but add in a cup of protein like raw burger, raw salmon, cooked chicken, raw organ meats or a whole egg. I'll toss in whatever veggies I have around, like squash, mixed veggies, sweet potato, and leafy greens. He has dropped a little weight, has more energy, his dandruff and hot spots have healed up and his stool is firm with no smell. We have a vet appt for him in a couple of months, I'm curious to see what she says about his changes. It's more expensive in the long run, but our Buddy is worth it.
I make my dog food, and I freeze dry it. It could also be dehydrated . I mix about a weeks worth at a time. I have a yorkie, so a pint works well for her.
I cook for Violet Ann and Jacob Samuel. They’re both elderly now, but they eat better than the humans. I start with chicken legs and cook them for 2 hours in the instant pot to make bone broth.
Thanks so much! We have a newish dog...lol We've had her a year. She's West highland terrier mix and she is like the tasmanian devil! Toys are everywhere! She will bury toys in the woodchips. She loves when I cook for her. We had a schnoodle, Ms. Bailey. She lived to 17! She loved home cooked meals too.
If you want to can it the thickener to use is Clear Gel. It's modified corn starch, mostly used for pie filling. You can't can it if you add grain, though.
I would raw pack ingredients and throw in maybe a tablespoon of rice for a thickener. Rice is not recommended for canning because it turns to mush, but in this case, it would be perfect. You could also add a few starchy beans that would turn to mush. Pasta would also act like a thickener.
We've made Kibble toppings, Kong fillers with pumpkin, yogurt, meat and veg. We also dehydrate apples and zucchini for 'pup-chips'. Kenton is our 12 year old Lab/Mastiff/ Shepherd/Husky and Maizey is out 9 year old Maremma Sheepdog/Lab mix. They would love your recipe, although they would also tell you that we never feed them
I will be making this today. My dogs are picky eaters, and I know they will love this. Thank you. I have three dogs; Peaches, 15 y/o, Winston, 4 y/o, and Scotty, 10 mons + I dog-sit my neighbor's three labs. 😱😱 No, I love it!
8yo great Dane Lady, 8yo Portuguese water dog Zoey, 6yo Great Pyrenees Eli, 4yo Aussie Samson, and Chihuahua DeDe. I make a kibble topper for my dogs. We raise our own meat so I make bone broth with the bones and add sweet potatoes that we grow and thicken it by cooking either oats or rice in it and puree it. It's similar in consistency to canned dog food, not quite as thick. My dogs love it
I make a mix of turmeric, ginger, coconut oil and a bit of black pepper (to improve the absorption of the turmeric). Mix all together over low heat, pour into 4oz serving cups and feed about 1/4 teaspoon 2X a day with meals. I keep the extra cups in the freezer until needed. It lasts a long time and sure helps with the joint pain!
Going to make this! I have beef shanks that I'll sub for the chicken. A cut we don't really like. We have a 60 lb Border Collie named Roxy! She is beautiful! And way too smart! Plus 3 cats, momma we rescued pregnant, gave birth in our trailer last winter in Florida, brought them all home to Canada, adopted 3 out and still have the 2 boys and momma! They will love a bit of this too! Mashed up.😊
Yes!!!! I make my dogs food too! When I make a lot I freeze them in portions. Patches- maltipoo 13yrs, Nylah- pitbull 3yrs and Maisie-pit mix 9mos. Love them so much!
We have 5 dogs... Baby (100 lbs.), Remington (100+ lbs.), Lexi (75 lbs.), Leonitus (20 lbs.), and Pixar (15 lbs.). I want to make dog food, but I would have to make it everyday. Love your channel!
My dog is a chiweenie named Sweetpea. She is a princess and loves chicken. She usually doesn’t like fruit or veggies but maybe if I puree them she won’t notice they’re added. I’m going to try this recipe for sure. Thank you so much!!
My puppers is Maggie and she just turned 2. She is a Jack Russell (and a couple other things) as well. I use a little bit of potato flakes to thicken hers. She likes her kibble but of course she thinks she is a little human and is supposed to be eating big people's stuffs. So whatever I fix for dinner i put aside whatever protein and veggies we are having and cook in a different little pot with no seasoning. She is spoiled rotten. When the hubs is home for breakfast he likes eggs so i scramble her some before i fix his so hers can cool and they eat at the same time. I am used to cooking for a large crowd. We were a family of 9. I just have one son here now who is an adult but he has high functioning autism and will probably live with us forevers. which is fine by me. So downsizing from 9 to 3, even gradually has been a hard adjustment. I still cook too much stuff at a time and end up freezing it for later.
I am definitely making this thank you so much for sharing. My dog name is Skittles and he is 18 years old and has developed a very sensitive stomach so I have to feed him pumpkin with his food because hi teeth now are falling out as well. Poor little guy. He is a cross between a chihuahua and a Papillion. ❤
You may be able to use Clear Jel powder from Hossier Hill Farm. It's Safe for canning apple pie filling in the thicken way. I'm not sure if it would be safe for pets. But it might be what you need.
Have been thinking about trying to make homemade dog food i have a 11ry dog he is a pappion x jack Russell called doughnut he is a rescue dog and I think he would love this so going to try it many thanks xx
We have cats and chickens here in our woods in Indiana. My friend has been doing fresh cooking for her older dog, though, with excellent results. Cooking for cats is a little trickier but can be done. Just not by me😉
Great idea for fur babies,. Completely of topic I was wondering if you could give me some advice I'm a single person who batch cooks but there is only so much room in freezers what do you think would benefit me most a dehydrator or a freeze dryer
I have to be honest that I don’t have and haven’t don’t research on freeze driers. I know lots of people like them but the cost is pretty high. We bought another freezer and tucked it in our dining room. Dehydrators are great but I don’t use them for meals.
I have an 8 pound Yorkie named Bébé Chou Chou(Shū Shū). We got her a year and a half ago. One of my customer’s daughter had a friend who took in my Bébé during Covid from a friend of hers who had to take in her nieces all of a sudden after a horrific event. She couldn’t afford her kids, her nieces and the dog. So emergently “Joanne” took her. Then “Joanne” had to go back to working in the office. My little girl became available. So Fave Nephew and I traveled from here in the Greater Portland area in the great state of Maine to Hoboken NJ to meet “Joanne” and my customer’s daughter who traveled from Alexandria VA. I had never had such a wee little dog. Our prior pooch was a Cairn Terrier, Smokey Joe who went over the rainbow bridge 5 months prior. All the dog jobs weren’t being done. So now we have Bébé Chou Chou. She came to us eating a food that’s bought from the vet. She hated it. She was underweight. I started making her food as we eat clean so she will eat clean. She hates carrots. Not fond of potato. Loves turkey, chicken, sweet potato, anything beef. She loves my broth, anything we are eating. But sometimes she can’t eat it cuz of what I’ve put in it. I researched what dogs can and can’t eat and can eat in moderation. I keep into account her Pooh-pertunities to see if she needs food to loosen or bind. We are so thankful that this lil pooch has come into our lives.
Shelby is 8 years old and she is 16lb 54.2% Poodle (Small) 27.4% Maltese 5.7% American Eskimo Dog 12.7% Supermutt Likely breeds that contribute to Supermutt: Pekingese, Lowchen, Lhasa Apso Finn is 1.5 years old and 27 pounds... he looks like a Rat Terrier, Italian Greyhound body, Jack Russell! LOL BUT this is what his DNA test says... not sure I believe it! The shelter where I got him said he was a Rat Terrier mix. Pitbull - 36.6% Poodle (Small) - 16% German Shepherd - 14.4% Boxer - 10.2% Supermutt - 22.8% Likely breeds that contribute to Supermutt: Chow Chow, Australian Cattle Dog, Chihuahua, Pomeranian Here is my current recipe for my dogs, Finn & Shelby : 6 lb. ground turkey 1 lb. grass-fed ground beef (I add this when I can afford it) ½ lb. chicken heart ½ lb. chicken liver (sometimes beef when I can find it) 6 pasture raised eggs (pastured organic if I can afford it) 1 cup of organic blueberries 1 cup organic green beans (cut up small) 1 can of organic pumpkin ½ cup cooked organic sweet potato (occasionally) ½ cup organic peas (occasionally) 1 ½ cups of chopped broccoli or broccoli slaw (organic if possible) 2 organic carrots shredded (they get these for treats too) 1 -2 cups organic oatmeal cooked in 3 cups of water (or organic Brown Rice) 3 cans sardines in water & no salt added (they need the Omega 3 and sardines are lowest in Mercury) 1 TBSP powdered Dog Greens powder (or Kelp, or Spirulina powder) (If it’s not in their vitamin) 2 teaspoons of seaweed calcium for dogs (If it’s not in their vitamin) 1- 2 TBSP Organic Turmeric In a big pot on the stove, I add about 2-3 TBSP of Coconut Oil. I put the liver & heart in the food processor & pulse it until it is in little chunks, and I add this along with the ground turkey. After this mixture is nearly cooked, I add the 6 eggs that I have already scrambled in a bowl & stir constantly until it is mixed in good so there are no egg pieces. While this is cooking on the lowest setting now, I chop the broccoli in the food processor & add that to the mix. I drain the water from the sardines & add them to the mix. Throughout this process I use a hamburger meat chopper that I got on Amazon to stir & break up the meat & chop up & mix in the sardines. The sardines have the lowest mercury levels of any fish & one of the highest concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids. The Omega 3s are good for their immune system, skin & coat, brain, joint health, kidney disease, heart, allergies, and arthritis. “Omega-3s are some of nature's strongest anti-inflammatories. However, it's important to maintain a balanced diet and not over-supplement, as too much can have negative effects on your dog's health.” You can also use salmon for the Omega 3’s & low mercury content. With the Black Friday sale on Amazon, I just ordered the Wholistic Canine Complete with Organic Pumpkin Dog Vitamins. Here are the ingredients: Organic Kelp (Ascophylum nodosum), Organic Flaxseed, Organic Pumpkin Protein, Calcium Ascorbate (Ester-C®), Organic Sunflower Lecithin, Lipase (dried Aspergillus oryzae fermentation product), Protease (dried Bacillus subtilis fermentation product), Amylase (dried Aspergillus niger fermentation product), Hemicellulase (dried Trichoderma reesei fermentation product), Cellulase (dried Rhizopus oryzae fermentation extract product), Bromelain (dried Ananas comosus fermentation product), Papain (dried Carica papaya fermentation extract product), Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Bifidobacterium Longum, Fructooligosaccharide I have learned a lot to improve their diet from Dr. Judy Morgan & Dr. Karen Becker and The BK pets on RUclips. I just ordered Dr. Becker’s cookbook “The Forever Dog Life: 120+ Recipes, Longevity Tips, and New Science for Better Bowls and Healthier Homes“ I have Dr. Judy’s first book, but she just came out with a new book: "Yin & Yang 2.0 Nutrition for Dogs: Maximizing Health with Whole Foods, Not Drugs"
I have three large Dobermans and would like to get them off commercial dog food. How much would you say to give the amounts to the dogs per day by using your recipe
I want to start making my Lucy’s food, currently she gets a 1 1/4 c morning and night, should I give her the same amount? She a 65 lb lab mix. Recipe ideas would be great😊
My 4lb baby’s name is Chewbacca, I call him Chewie because his name is longer than his body. He just turned 5 the first week of October. He unfortunately cannot digest his food. He’s on a special diet that costs $50+ a bag. Luckily he only eats 2/4 cup a day. WOULDN’T change him for the world. He’s an emotional support dog. Although I’m the one that’s disabled he’s special needs between his size and digestive problems….we’re a match made in heaven. Lol Tfs. Have a wonderful day.🐾🦴❤🤗
We got our Gizmo last year he was a rehome. The vet said dont by anything labeled grain free a lot of dogs were dieing because of it there's nutrients missing for the heart health.
Ours get grain in their breakfast but they love this for dinner. I totally get the worry since pups need all the correct vitamins. Some pups don't do well with grains due to skin or other issues and this is why we offered this video. You can always throw oats or rice in if you prefer.
Avocado oil I'm not using I found that avocados are very bad for dogs. My story, I had started to use avocado oil in cooking and we always let out dog lick our dinner plates after we're done. She doesn't get leftovers, though. She started throwing up after about 5 days and I figured out that I had started using the avocado oil. I stopped using it and she got better. She hasn't thrown up since. Just an FYI, I'm not nutritionist nor vet.
Chicken is the worst food for dog allergies. I have always cooked my dogs food and he had terrible allergies. The vet told me to stop using chicken and so I use pork and veg and a small amount of coconut oil also a small amount of turmeric because that’s good for dogs. I put it all in a crock pot and cook it for hours until the pork is tender, the veg I put in about 30 minutes before the pork is cooked. I bag mine up and put it into freezer bags and take a weeks worth out at a time and keep in the fridge. I forgot I cook the meat in unsalted veg broth.
My 15yr old is Darth Vader, my 9yr old Tank, my two 5 months old are Padme and Leia. Our 3yr old cat name is Dooku. I make them dehydrated chicken, chicken hearts, salmon, turkey tendons, pig ears, beef, and yams. I make them homemade food when they're sick. But, I'm just gonna start making it all the time.
I have 2 Miniature Schnauzer's one is in the early stages of kidney disease so I found a human quality speciality food from just for dogs. Unfortunately it's very expensive. It's basically brown and white rice, ground lamb, and vegetables along with a bunch of vitamins. I have been thinking about making my own version. As far as canning your dog food, you can't thicken it before canning it because it'll interfere with the heat transfer. Rose red homestead has a great RUclips channel where she explains the science behind pressure canning.
We have another version with oats or rice on here somewhere. I am sorry your pup isn't doing well. I need to watch her channel. I have only seen like one video.
What a awesome tip for shredded chicken by using the mixer. Never would have thought of that. That is why I'm so happy that I found your channel .\
I have a rescue cattle dog. I got her from a shelter when she was 4 years old. I have a pitbull I’m madly in love with. She is Ruby Tuesday and turned 10 years old in July. I am going to try this. Sounds cheaper than dog food is now too. Thank you for sharing.
Ruby Tuesday is a great name! I bet she loves this recipe.
Not quite 7 and a bit pound Maltese whose birthday is in five days he will be 8 years old. We make Daisy Mae, American foxhound, the same recipe you just made. We also use ground meat in place of shredded meat. She like purred pumpkin too
We did ground turkey and cranberries this week and they loved it.
I have a 10 yr old 90 lb shepherd/cattle dog mix. He is a K9 garbage disposal, nothing will be refused. Thank you for sharing.
Sissy-14, Kaiah-9, Frank-12, & Toby-8. They love when I cook for them.
We had a Toby growing up.
I make my dog food, and I freeze dry it. It could also be dehydrated . I mix about a weeks worth at a time. I have a yorkie, so a pint works well for her.
Your pups are so lucky! Home made food!!
We have 4 cats and healthy cat food is EXPENSIVE!!!
My dog's name is Cotonnie. She is a Coton de Tulear, 10lbs and a sweetheart. Thanks for the homemade dog food.
She sounds adorable!
I use chicken, veggies and make and can it like soup, just add rice when done and they love it. It is also good for me as well.
That’s a good idea, I bet it’s good for them!
I cook for Violet Ann and Jacob Samuel. They’re both elderly now, but they eat better than the humans.
I start with chicken legs and cook them for 2 hours in the instant pot to make bone broth.

I'm pretty sure our dog, Bing, will love this! Thanks for another great recipe. Your so fun, love your energy.
I have a 100lb boxer name Nanook. He loves when I make his homemade dog food. He just turned 5 last month.
You could make a cookbook of just dog foods then maybe add canning instructions when you get that part figured out.
Anything with meat will be 75 minutes for pints 90 minutes for quarts
We've made Kibble toppings, Kong fillers with pumpkin, yogurt, meat and veg. We also dehydrate apples and zucchini for 'pup-chips'. Kenton is our 12 year old Lab/Mastiff/ Shepherd/Husky and Maizey is out 9 year old Maremma Sheepdog/Lab mix. They would love your recipe, although they would also tell you that we never feed them

Can anyone recommend a website with dogfood recipes? Also do you need to add vitamin supplements to their food as well?

I make a kibble topper for my dogs. We raise our own meat so I make bone broth with the bones and add sweet potatoes that we grow and thicken it by cooking either oats or rice in it and puree it. It's similar in consistency to canned dog food, not quite as thick.

I make dog food for my three rescues and sometimes make it in the crockpot. I also add turmeric (and a little black pepper) for their health.
We have Reba (85 lb boxer/pit mix), Winston (38 lb Corgi) and Stella (8 lb Chihuahua). They’re all healthy and our vet has approved what I feed them.
Turmeric is a great addition to dog food!
I make a mix of turmeric, ginger, coconut oil and a bit of black pepper (to improve the absorption of the turmeric). That’s a lot of big pups. 🐶
I bet a 100 pound pup can eat quite a bit!!!!
You could make a big batch and use it as a topper on their kibble. They would get the benefit of the homemade dog food without breaking the bank.
Happy dogs❤
My dog is a chiweenie named Sweetpea. She is a princess and loves chicken. She usually doesn’t like fruit or veggies but maybe if I puree them she won’t notice they’re added. I’m going to try this recipe for sure. Thank you so much!!
Thanks for a morning laugh Shawn!
Thank you Shay!!!! ❤️
we have Addi Girl who is a 6-year-old chihuahua, Goose is our 4-year-old rottie, and then Princess Poppy our sweet little shepherd mutt is 7months🥰
We call Remington Princess often since that was her name when we got her.
Looks good!

I love the idea of potato flake! I am going to give this a try.
There are recipes for chicken pot pie or beef. You can also can grd beef.
Home made dog food is healthier than kibble for sure.

If you scoop it into mini muffin tins and freeze it that way, then you can put it in a Ziploc bag and only take out what you need when you need it
Pressure canning very interested in safe method also
I'm going to try adding chicken livers also he will only eat pureed, yes he's finicky.
Will let you know
Pure country is an awesome movie!!!! Rip rusty!!!
We love our Cats- Mako, maverick, Maxwell and Mason!!!

She sounds so sweet and what a story! Our Harley and Dusty where schnauzer Cairn Terrier mix. They are the cutest.

Finn is 1.5 years old and 27 pounds... he looks like a Rat Terrier, Italian Greyhound body, Jack Russell! LOL BUT this is what his DNA test says... not sure I believe it! The shelter where I got him said he was a Rat Terrier mix.

Here is my current recipe for my dogs, Finn & Shelby :
6 lb. ground turkey
1 lb. grass-fed ground beef (I add this when I can afford it)
½ lb. chicken heart
½ lb. chicken liver (sometimes beef when I can find it)
6 pasture raised eggs (pastured organic if I can afford it)
1 cup of organic blueberries
1 cup organic green beans (cut up small)
1 can of organic pumpkin
½ cup cooked organic sweet potato (occasionally)
½ cup organic peas (occasionally)
1 ½ cups of chopped broccoli or broccoli slaw (organic if possible)
2 organic carrots shredded (they get these for treats too)
1 -2 cups organic oatmeal cooked in 3 cups of water (or organic Brown Rice)
3 cans sardines in water & no salt added (they need the Omega 3 and sardines are lowest in Mercury)
1 TBSP powdered Dog Greens powder (or Kelp, or Spirulina powder) (If it’s not in their vitamin)
2 teaspoons of seaweed calcium for dogs (If it’s not in their vitamin)
1- 2 TBSP Organic Turmeric
In a big pot on the stove, I add about 2-3 TBSP of Coconut Oil.

I have learned a lot to improve their diet from Dr.
This sounds amazing!
I have three large Dobermans and would like to get them off commercial dog food. How much would you say to give the amounts to the dogs per day by using your recipe
I would look up what the suggested serving is for your dogs weight. I know for my pups but I’m not sure for larger.
I want to start making my Lucy’s food, currently she gets a 1 1/4 c morning and night, should I give her the same amount? She a 65 lb lab mix.
Recipe ideas would be great😊
You should if that’s what you use now. Check with her vet to be sure as well.
Lol Tfs. Have a wonderful day.🐾🦴❤🤗
Aww, Chewie is such a cutie!
@ thanks, he’s my everything!😊
I read that dogs shouldn’t have tomatoes. Hmmm, I wonder.
Interesting. Ruger loves tomatoes. He steals them from the garden all day long. We have extr plans all over the yard now 😂
FYI, potatoes are also toxic to dogs. And they love coconut oil, even as a top dressing. :-)
We use sweet since they aren’t technically a potato. I know onions are a no no too.
We have clay, lady, espy,Rickyand Pudge
Pudge. Love that
We got our Gizmo last year he was a rehome.
Gonna start making my own dog food. How about homemade treats?
We have a chicken jerky video on the channel already. Check out our dog related playlist.
Interesting!
Help me.. homemade Vicks vapor rub ...
It is in the works!
