My Top 20 Amiga 500 Game Music

- I used a specific criteria to choose which songs to be on the list, and bear in mind that these are the top tracks according to one person, more specifically me.
These are the criteria:
1. One game from each franchise
(A lot of game series have more than one game with memorable music, but I stuck with one from each to make the list more varied.)
2. Mustn't rely heavily on sampled snippets of prerecorded music like Gods, Speedball 2, Banshee or Chaos Engine.
(This could be a list in itself, since I love the music for Gods and F/A 18 interceptor, but I always had a problem when music gets attention because of its use of samples instead composition. IMO two such examples are Xenon 2 and Blood Money. It sounded awesome back in the day, but it's style over substance.)
3. Rather well crafted than catchy songs.
(I love the soundtrack for Giana Sisters and James Pond for example, but I wanted complexity and workmanship in the tunes i chose.)
Hope you enjoy listening to these awesome songs! Hopefully there are a few you havn't heard before.

Turrican II - Huelsbeck's Masterpeace. Still my favourite tune of all times, hands down.
They're all great tracks in that game. I think the Amiga Turrican II soundtrack ties first place for me alongside the C64 'Ocean loader' tracks (I can't separate them, I love them all).
@@Music-tg5is I play'd this tune last week with a bluetooth speaker. A young told me "hey, cool music."
@@ralfjung4156 Heh! They don't know what they're missing. Well, perhaps some kids do ... hence all the current 80s retro scene / synthwave genre. Kids who weren't even born then, still feeling the 80s nostalgia, lol. Hey, good music is good music, period. :)
@@Music-tg5is Well spoken.
So many great songs but that would be my pick too
Yep, there can only be THAT game at number one. Hülsbeck is basically the king of the amiga sound.
Nice collection of music! I totally agree on #1... all time classic! Chris Hülsbeck
Shadow of the Beast and Turrican II... can't argue with that.
I dunno why this Video has received some Negatives, I think its great that you have picked your favourites. Of course people are gonna say "Why have you picked this and why haven't you picked that", but these are your favourites and I think that's great. Also nice to see some different ones making the List to the usual ones that always feature on others. Great list of Games and was well put together. Amiga for life, as you can tell I am a huge fan of the Amiga. Shadow Of the Beast is my second Favourite Game of all time, so I was pleased to see that in the Top 3.
I was thinking to myself that Whittaker and Hülsbeck had to appear in this list, and I wasn't disappointed.
Some great picks here!
Lotus and Turrican are masterpieces
Project X & Xennon 2
Lemmings had the best Amiga music. Ghouls n ghosts has a nice tune brutally executed. X-out intro is epic too. Turrican 2 also is a blast.
11:45 got me hypnotised.
Excellent choices!
I'll have to suggest that Gauntlet III was probably one of the most incredible pieces of composition (prog rock?) the Amiga was graced with. Tim Follin was not only a brilliant technician, but also a gifted composer. (Incidentally, he did not enjoy the Amiga for musical playback / composition - thank goodness he persevered anyway).
Double Dragon 3 is best Amiga music. Turican II best music. Amiga is legendary computer. All music very good.
Great video compilation, Amiga sounds so good 😎
Thank you for the film.
There is something special about Amiga graphics, not sure if it's the color or what? Very cool though.
Vibrancy, I suspect. Although it only really pops on CRT monitors.
Amiga was far ahead of it's time with graphics and sound out of the box. People may laugh now, but imagine having this experience in the late 80's and early 90's. Now we have photorealistic graphics and movie like music in games on a modern generation consoles, but it's not as fascinating as computers and software was back then.
@@mattx5499 It's a tragedy that they went under. I sometimes imagine if they were still making computers what they would be like today.
@@Pulsed101 They went bancrupt because Commodore was making PC clones that were more expensive than originals that nobody wanted instead of investing into development of the Amiga that was one of the most beloved home computer at the time. They wasted all the potential. Also the companies that bought Amiga after Commodore's demise were interested into selling old models and nothing else.
Oh and logical rare game with coloured balls!!!!
No one could accuse you of click-baiting them, since you titled the video 'My Top 20' ... So whatever the merits, these are your own personal choices.
great stuff. jaguar x220 would have been on mine.
Of course Apidya has to be on any list like this, that whole soundtrack is amazing.
1000000% Love ❤️
Turrican ❤
Whats the First music? ITS blilliant.
It's from Red Sector Megademo, and I agree :)

@@Moonfreeze thanks.i Love this Front 242 sounds.
Lotus 2 - hmmm I never heard music you showed.
It's the music from when you finish the game
@@Moonfreeze looks like I never finished it haha. Just kidding.. Title music rule :)
Some great tracks and some absolute stinkers. Funny how nr 7 helped starting up the Battlefield franchice.
I play'd this tune last week with a bluetooth speaker. A young told me "hey, cool music."
Piracy on the high seas soundtrack!!
we all ave to thankyu the guys
What is the opening music from again? (0:00 - 0:25)
It's from Red Sector Megademo
Nice choices (Awesome is an uncommon one, i love the Boss music). What could have been added maybe :
Dune by Stéphane Picq
Speedball 2 by Nation XII and Richard Joseph
Flashback by Jean Baudlot and Raphaël Gesqua
Jaguar XJ220 by Martin Iveson
Unreal by Maniacs of Noise
Hybris by Paul Van der Velk
A Prehistorik Tale by Jochen Hippel (and most of his soundtracks actually)
Canon Fodder by Richard Joseph and Jon Hare
Hostages by Charles Callet
The Killing Game Show by Ray Norrish
Went through your list, and they were all great picks! My favorites were Jaguar XJ220 (awesome basslines) and A Prehistorik Tale (Must look up more stuff by Jochen!).
I excluded stuff that relied heavily on prerecorded snippets of music like Speedball 2 and Cannon Fodder (also Blood Money, Gods and Xenon 2)
But thank you for these ones!
@@Moonfreeze Thanks for your comment. I agree with you for Xenon 2 (which was actually a song by Bomb The Bass originally), but actually Speedball 2 and Gods are authentic compositions for the Amiga. If Gods had a studio version (recorded in 1990 but only released in 2005), Speedball 2 was only made with an Amiga (and relative poor sounds) by Nation XII with the help of Richard Joseph. Both are still really original and great so we shall consider as great music for video games. Cannon Fodder title was a song written and performed for Jon Hare who wrote the game, but i admit the title song has big samples. Jochen Hippel is the god of the Atari ST music but his Amiga works are less known (most of the time there are adapations of his own atari works, i love Astaroth, Dragonflight, Rings of Medusa, Enchanted Land, etc.). He deserves to be as known as Hulsbeck for instance.
@@niceanddestroyed Yes they were made exclusively for those games, but what I mean is that the music was arranged and played on outside instruments and then sampled to the Amiga (as opposed to the individual notes being programmed on the machine itself). I'm not saying it's cheating or anything, and the Gods soundtrack is great, but for this specific list I only used music that I considered not reliant on pre-recorded music.
Also I know 1 song on this list is kinda cheating (Ghouls'n Ghosts has a sampled guitar).
@@Moonfreeze isn't all Amiga music made from samples? The Paula was a sample playback chip (a very good one and ahead of it's time) but not a synthesiser or sound generator in its own right.
@@stephenhall2980 Yes but I think its different to play sampled individual notes/chords as compared to entire "riffs"/segments. I don't mind it, but they're not on this list.
1. Lost patrol
2. Cannon fodder
3. Lotus
4. Body blows
5. Benefactor
Amazing what the 8bit, 4 channel Paula was capable of… 🎼
Thank you for posting. I respect that these are your choices but I personally wouldn’t have any of these songs in my top 20 including your number 1, as Turrican II has a much better theme IMO. I also wouldn’t have discarded sample based music as these are still original and very catchy songs, some of which are the best produced on the Amiga. Was interesting to hear another perspective though.
the sound is in my mind .......
I was wondering where the hell Turrican II was.
It was all the way on 1st place where it belongs.
Shadow Of The Beast so epic.....
madmomentsgo yeeeeeah man heje
pinbal rulez!
Amiga, great cuz you just play the game for the music alone, not to mention the rest:)
Chris Huelsbeck at the top. Can't be that wrong....
almost forgot Led Storm, nice choice there.. besides ofc Shadow of the Beast & Turrican 2! both imo equally good.., just Xenoblast 2 and maybe R-type (main theme) are missing on the list
If you mean Xenon 2: Megablast, I consider it mostly a sampled pre-existing song. (Look up Bomb The Bass - Megablast).
How do you know if a game does uses samples or not? And how much is "heavy use" and how much is not? To me I heard many games using samples all the way!
Of course everything is sampled. But I mean sampling entire chunks of music, not sampled notes.
Respect your taste, lot of good titles ;) but why you did put Lotus2 gameplay music and didn't the one of the best from intro? ;))
I was just thinking that. I really think the lotus 2 intro music is some of the best music on the system. (I actually have it on my playlist in the car:p)
Crystal Hammer!
Damn right!
thanks for posting. Not sure I agree that much but fair effort. These are all pretty early right? Too many samples in Xenon 2 to qualify?
Thanks! I differentiate between sampled notes and sampled chunks of music.
Xenon 2 is just basically "Bomb The Bass - Megablast" (look it up)
I do like a lot of those tunes. But this list I focused on music composed on the actual machine instead of arrangements made outside and then sampled.
Hope I made sense.
@@Moonfreeze waaaah mind blown ... I had assumed the game came first...so they basically named the game after the track?!?!
@@Windyhead They are still good tracks, I think they worked with the creators of the track or something.
You can do a deep dive in all that stuff.
I think Nation 12 did some stuff for bitmap brothers, like Gods and Speedball 2. (ruclips.net/video/7bo-47EWS3Y/видео.html)
super legal !
i miss my amiga from 86
Nice. Most of those tunes are remixed on my channel. 🥰
Nr 1 should always be Cannon Fodder ;p
⭐
you miss lost patrol
Uploaded a remaster of the Lost Patrol just now :)
@@randomrapidreviews7028 Lost Patrol is the best soundtrack... cannon fodder is also cool
What about Settlers?
Uh oh. Up to number 5 and still haven't seen Dogs of War or Battle Squadron. Getting nervous.
Ahhh. Only 3 to go now, and still not there!
Only 2 to go. Not looking good.
Ouch. Neither made the top 20. Oh well.
Eliva is has one of the creepiest music, damn.
It was a horror game. I remember playing 'Bloodfest'. It was the symilar style game with fist person view. It was even creepier. 'Death Mask' was creepy too. Maybe it's kind of outdated now, but in the mid 90's it was really immersing experience with all the exploration these games were about.
👍
Big thumbs up with Turrican 2 it is a masterpiece. But where is Xenon 2, where is xenon 2!!!!!!! speedball 2 and Shadow of the beast 2. I know It’s opinion but xenon 2 no forgiveness!! 😓
I regard the music for Xenon 2 as a song made outside the Amiga and then sampled. The criteria is in the description.
Look up "Bomb the Bass - Megablast" - ruclips.net/video/EgjNb-6EOYw/видео.html
This game introduced me to Bomb the Bass... It was a game it had music. Ive misunderstood I didn’t realise it was omitted due to it being a record. It’s a top tune, the Amiga version of the mega blast had more samples in it than the Atari ST.. 👍👍
Mmm xenon 2 megablast no?
Some shitters in there!
Sorry this is a horrible music collection.. The Amiga had a lot more to offer than this. I guess it was early Amiga 500 games so perhaps not the best if they were 512K memory but 20 - 15 songs are ear bleeding ... or maybe im getting to be an old grumpy bastard :D
Sry you didn't like'm. But these are my favourite ones. Especially Tim Follin makes awesome music imo, which is why he is slightly overrepresented :)
What do you think was missing?
