I loved the music theory conversation. When they were talking about how the blues plays with major/ minor tonality reminded me of an interview I saw of Frank Zappa. He said he uses chords without a third so that the chords stay ambiguous, they could be major or minor depending on how the listener chooses to perceive it. Interesting stuff!
In regards to ppll having a "favorite key", I know that Hans Simmer, as well as alot of EDM producers prefers to write in the D - F range, as the sub bass hits really hard on bigger sound systems such as clubs or cinemas. I'm not sure if i agree that any key is better in general, but I would argue that diffferent composisions works better or worse depending on what key they are in. Mostly due to how well lower frequencies are translated.
We use the equal temperament scale, but instruments are pretty much inherently going to differ from our attempt to make them tuned as equal temperament… And also each note’s harmonics are going to be all over the place (slightly sharp or flat compared to what they’re “supposed to be”) …I mean unless you’ve programmed a keyboard to play just sine waves
So someone - especially someone who is attached to their own instrument - Is likely going to hear a true difference if they were to transpose a song to another key. It might depend on the song or style they’re going for, or it might really be the case that one of the keys just really has an overall timbre that they either have become a custom to or is just all-around less wacky due to the tuning. And in the end they like that key.
And then if they try to apply that globally to all songs, claiming that all song sound better in that key… That’s clearly just a result of their own bias plus their ability to recognize pitch.
@@Michael-kp4bd Really nice way of putting it, since I produce mostly, I not as married to a key, I think. But I do have some of the "the deeper the better" still stuck in me from my metal days, and from getting into producing EDM. (Yes I Indeed am the highest of class when it comes to taste)
I would argue that key is less important for timbre, as in if we're talking about the difference between F and D, the timbre will be very close to the same for most instruments. Unless there is a really low or really high note, that will be brought more in line or less extreme, by changing the key.
Obviously the timbre will vary alot if you decide to chose a key 8 semitones higher or lower. But with these smaller changes of a few semitones I just dont buy it. The fav scale there will simply be due to bias.
@@jacobaaandersen Just to be clear about timbre, I think it really depends on the instrument. For instance, take a typical home or practice room piano, which is most likely tuned somewhat imperfectly - strings can warp over time or from a prior move, and recall that each hammer hits somewhere between 1 and 3 strings… What I’m saying is the timbre even just between two notes could be quite different. I remember having a piano where the G7 key was just so recognizable because it’s sort of glistened in a way that absolutely no other key on the piano did. In fact, I don’t have perfect pitch… but with that piano, some notes were so recognizable that I could usually associate the timbre with any played note, so that I effectively had perfect pitch… but only for my home piano 😆
These are imperfections, and may be more extreme examples, but I’m fairly certain that more common, inevitable imperfections would still lead to a perceivable difference upon transposing. And that’s an easy path for someone to build a preference for entire collections of notes, i.e. a song in certain key vs another key.
Honestly though, there’s probably a combination of factors, and my hypothesis might not even be the most significant. But it seems worth noting.
something that i think justifies a preference for certain keys is that sub bass/the harmonics of a sub sounds stronger in certain keys to our ears... So people who make music with an emphasis on the sub bass frequencies usually stick to keys where it resonates best on soundsystems/in our ears, from like D - G, and the bass will hit differently depending on the key. So from a production standpoint, it matters a lot... Its hard to find, say, EDM tracks beyond a certain range of keys for that reason. Or like anything with 808s. Imo it can affect the tonal or even emotional quality of music a lot
The coolest part about the blues scales is how you can play both of them over the same major harmony.

@@cameronhopewell641 Same (self-taught). I don't know how to explain theory properly accurately. What I mean is, the major and minor blues scales can be played over the same 12 bar blues progression. In the left hand, play the chords: F, Bb and C in the 12 bar style. Then, in the right hand, you can improvise the notes of the major blues scale [F, G, Ab, A, C, D], as well as the notes of the minor blues scale [F, Ab, Bb, B, C, Eb]
@@cameronhopewell641 Also, keep in mind, when I say "both at the same time" I don't mean all of the notes in any random order at once: you have to learn how to hear the unique flavors of both scales, and then tastefully interchange between them on the right pivot points.
@@cameronhopewell641 I also figured out that the root note of every chord in the 1-4-5 progression can be branched out into it's own coupling of blues scales. In other words, even if you're playing the F blues, you can flirt with the Bb major/minor blues scales when you're playing the Bb chord of the progression. It's wild riffing on that stuff; you slowly learn that all 12 notes can work at any given moment, on any given chord-- but only if the context leading into it and out of it makes sense. It's all related by 6 degrees of separation. Lol.

Minor/major 7 scale opens up modes like the altered scale (C minor major 7 scale from B to B), the lydian flat 7 scale (C minor major 7 from F to F) lydian augmented scale (C minor major 7 from Eb to Eb). Also a scale used on sus b9 chords by Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, others, is C minor major 7 from D to D.

I’m autistic. Music theory makes my brain fall out of my head. I know what I’m playing, I just don’t know what its called. I can compose an entire song but I won’t be able to tell you what key its in. I play by ear.
I'm the same way. I have relative pitch and it's an awesome gift to have, but it's suuuuuper awkward trying to play with a group that's relying on sheet music and using proper musical lingo.

I also agree with Destiny about how sharps and flats can either make the overall sound brighter or darker. I was taught that myself but I believe it's wrong, it's more like certain key centers are brighter or darker than others. My key piece of evidence, and it may be subjective, but the key of C has no accidentals but it's the brightest sounding key to my ears.
Jacob Collier has perfect pitch so his view on harmony etc is generally not coming from the same perspective as the average musician.
Many of the most emotive and moving major symphonic works are written in D, E, F and F# minor
I'm partial to C# and E minor personally. And yes I am a weirdo who can identify that different keys emote and express differently in my opinion lol

It’s a thing in baroque and classical music that the maj 7 interval is dissonant, so I think that’s what Shapiro is referring to. I believe it comes from figured bass, but it’s been a while, so I may be wrong

His takes about music needing melody, harmony and rythim are not stupid, they are defined by a lot of people in the classical world. They are just subjective to the individual. Some people believe Noise is music, while I have a hard time agreeing with this. The classic definition has this three components. Artiquilation and feel for sure do matter in the terms of making good music, but with the three base concepts in theory you can create something that almost anyone agrees is music, it may just not be good one.
Another tak that the dude had that was kinda dumb, by saying "western people are trying to objectify music and that's dumb". I do agree it's dumb, but the insinuation that eastern musicians don't have this obcessions? Since tousands of years people in the east have this idea of using objectivity to any piece of art, including music.

I don't think it's just that Nick and Haz pretend to have all the answers to the world's problems. They also prey on their audience's insecurities. IE incel, socially awkward, etc and tell them all their shortcomings as ppl are not their fault and it's something out of their control...society. So in order to be accepted. They have to fight against societal norms to be happy.
They don't even realize that they feed into those insecurities and use them. So if you confront them they will deny.

just nope. have you ever listened to a rap song? just becuse you don't like it doesn't mean its not music. there's plenty of harmony in rap considering that the instrumentals typically have bass lines, chords, and melodies. ALSO there are incredibly harmonically rich rap songs that sample soul and jazz records that completely falls under your definition. not to mention the fact that melodic rap exists. poetry and music are not mutually exclusive.
There are poets who believe poetry is music. There is a larger group of poets who believe poetry has, at least, elements that are shared with music like rhythm.
Dictionary definitions are cool for middle school papers, but what something is or isn’t is usually more complicated. For example, what is the Oxford definition of “good”? Now compare that definition to how Wikipedia defines “good”. Now open the Republic and see what “good” means.
Further, find the Oxford definition of “rap”, then find the Oxford definition of “poetry”. They will have different definitions. If we use your own logic, then rap is not music, which means you don’t have a foundation for the rest of your statement.

Destiny's obsession with Shapiro and Crowder is pretty cringe if I'm being honest. He should just go ahead and agree to a debate with them and sort out these feelings he has. I don't think it's healthy for him to continue this cringy cycle of envy and copium. It's certainly not a good look to be consistently obsess over other content providers. If he is so consumed with jealously of their success and intellect, he should try harder to produce content that will acheive it for himself; this whole watch me fail at video games while I repeat tropes and react to things isn't going to get him there and considering his politics he has infinitely more potential by leaning more into the whole "multiculturalism/open borders/I hate white people" grift. Every video I see from this guy has mentioned either or both of them and it's always the same opaque, vague complaints that amount to nothing. Both Crowder and Shapiro are universally known for their willingness to engage with good faith actors, so I don't think he would have any trouble setting something up if he actually wanted to

Both ben and crowder would run away from a formidable opponent like they have in the past. Ben doesn’t really do debates at all and when he does get questioned he leaves the interview and crowder is know to dodge debates with people who aren’t children.
