Excellent video Rowan!! The old girl looks C&O but definitely sounds N&W. Hearing her in the distance sounds like the 1218. Nothing beats the smell of oil, grease and coal smoke.
Despite this restoration taking longer than many expected this was still worth the wait, hopefully before 1309 is scheduled to pull those polar express trains in a few weeks the crew will be able to do another test run but all the way to Frostburg til time. Fingers crossed.
Seeing a former C&O loco done in the Western Maryland's scheme is so cool. And the N&W hooter whistle just fits for 1309; it's like a part of 1218 rides with her. Great shots!
When I think steam power , that whistle is what comes to mind, something hauntingly beautiful about it. Thinking about what that sounds like off in the distance at night brings chills . Great video awesome editing
The first 20 yrs of my life was growing up on Cash Valley Rd, about a qtr. mi. down the road from Helmstetter's farm .. the WM was our playground in so many ways .. crazy cool getting excited about watching vids of trains on what used to be a typical Summer day with my brothers and friends .. you're great at what you do, Rowan, keep it up and Ill keep tuning in .. Thanks man
This was my favorite video of all. So professional at the beginning giving context and then we could all just focus on and enjoy the train. Thank you for the extra editing and cinematic work. Happy Thanksgiving from Lynchburg railfans!
The video was just awesome. Almost like being there. Love to see these heritage steam locomotives. What a treasure!! Thanks so much for sharing the excitement.
Wow that thing looks incredible in the Western Maryland livery. That's got to be one of the most photogenic locomotives I've ever seen. That shot of it stopping at the railroad crossing is just beautiful with the fall colors and huge plume of steam and smoke. They even painted the rods with black inlay, such a good restoration.
Oh damn it’s cool seeing all these steam engines coming back to life. I seen a video recently if the great late Southern Pacific #2472 do like a test run after it’s restoration. I haven’t see that thing move in a long time. Nice to this man!🔥
The Steam Engine is a thing of beauty. The whistle, the billowing steam, the sound as it takes off and gains momentum. It takes you back 150 years to imagine these Iron giants gliding across the prairies blowing its whistle. It stops and brings us everything we needed, provisions, people and anything else you can think of. Great Video, thank you.
Now living out near Seattle, I can't wait to come home and ride this. I still miss 734 and wish they didn't let it deteriorate as much as it has. At least put a cover over it.
So many things on the plate! One,a real Baldwin Articulated, last of its kind! Two,one super whistle, that stirs the heart strings,! And three, your usual superb photography, plus that artistic eye,! Rowan,Happy Thanksgiving, and may you and yours, enjoy this grateful day! P.S. When you consider that some,ex-C&O,switchers would up on the Virginian,it's really right and proper that the Western Maryland gets its dibs in,as they ran quite a few Articulateds in their heyday!! Thanks for your efforts and time!! 😇!😇😇😇😇😇💯💯💯💯💯💫💫
OMG! I Just Don,t Have The words.. Dear lord! What A Beautiful! Lady! Living,Breathing, Lady. what A Deep Fantastic Voice She Has. Almost sitting Her In Tears. I Hope to Be able to Meet Her Someday !
Thank you for documenting this test run of the #1309 on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. The #1309 seemed to perform without a hitch (exept for the problem with the whistle). The sky looked beautiful as the train was proceeding back to teh yard. Thank you for uploading this video for our enjoyment!
Very cool shots! You probably don’t remember me but I used to work with you in 2018 at a lovely store I won’t name and you were a wealth of knowledge on these beautiful machines.
Absolutely fantastic camera work with so many beautiful shots. I cant wait to see some of the stills. Hope they get the whistle fixed it just makes the whole thing sound so cool. Thank you!
From Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, this engine is all around Chessie System.
I love your channel. My father and I used to watch trains run the rails here in the DC area when I was a kid. Fast forward to when I was in college in Frostburg I found out about WMSR 734 Mountain Thunder and was sad to hear of its retirement but happy to see 1309 getting up and running and hope to go to Cumberland in the spring or summer for a ride.
I remember seeing her rot away in the parking lot yard of the B&O Rail Museum in the hood in West Baltimore when I was a little kid. Never thought she'd be on the rails again.
Man, that hooter whistle is just MADE for big Appalachian articulateds! At some point, I’ve got to get down to se the WMSR! Thanks for bringing us along for the journey!
Rowan what a fantastic locomotive.Seeing it run again is awesome, hope the whistle failure is a minor repair and more videos of the 1309 are forthcoming.thanks for the kick ass video and happy foaming
I’ve heard that much work has to be done to get 1309 to utilize their whole line including the turn table. How much work has been done and has yet to be done I couldn’t tell you.
Rowan your videos are fun to watch and the high resolution / quality of them is great! There's lots of steam loco footage out there but I love the segment starting at 7:25 when she stops before crossing the road. Thanks for sharing your work!
Nothing like steam on a fall or winter morning!! As someone else mentioned in another comment, love the shot you got at 7:16 when they had to flag the crossing. Happy (after) Thanksgiving.
Great video, Rowan! It finally happened. I contributed financially, but my modest contributions pale compared to the 'sweat equity' poured forth by so many into #1309's refurbishment. Your excellent video really captured this magnificently restored engineering marvel in action. Thank you.
Sweet Video! A beautiful addition to the Western MD team. I couldn't help but notice that some of the tracks are in need of some work. Watching the helper engine sway too and fro over the old rails made me nervous. Nice work. Can't wait to take an excursion next year!
Work on the rails has already commenced, it is being completed in phases I believe this is why they haven't run to Frostburg yet, correct me if I'm wrong somebody
Awesome 👏 video! Love the camera angles and close ups! Such an awesome sight seeing that train 🚂 restored ! Never knew they had that much smoke! Thanks 🙏🏼 for sharing!

Technically, she is not an Allegheny. Alleghenys have a 2-6-6-6 wheel arrangement. This one is a 2-6-6-2. Though I don’t blame you for the mistake. They do share similar smokebox front designs.
Hello Rowan, so good to see another new Video from you. Excellent quality video too with fantastic location shots and perfect lighting. Love the opening narration and captions. Well done my friend, as always, outstanding work! Thank you.

Yes I agree with you
I wish they would’ve put 1218‘s whistle on the 1309
Even though 1309 is an older design then 1218
When I think steam power , that whistle is what comes to mind, something hauntingly beautiful about it. Thinking about what that sounds like off in the distance at night brings chills . Great video awesome editing
Thanks so much Keith, to GOD BE THE GLORY!
There is almost something sad and mournful about 1309 whistle.
Man, that first crossing shot where it stops and the last three shots of the video are some of the best I’ve seen of 1309 so far! Great video, Rowan!
Thanks so much, be sure to share with friends!!

Awesome Video Rowen ! Had A Fun Day As Well, And It Was Nice Meeting Up With You Again!
Good to see you as well!!
ha, same thing happened to us this year with the whistle, it turned. No matter how tight you get that valve, boiler gets hot, and suddenly its loose.
Heat expansion I imagine, hmmmmm. They'll have to come up with a solution
This is the most beautiful articulated I've seen, and the cherry on top is the hooter whistle.

Thanks Joe, happy foaming and thanksgiving to you sir!! God bless you!
AWESOME! Can't wait to visit WMSR next year!
Any idea why they didn't turn 1309 around in Frostburg?
Out of daylight is my guess, testing is better done when one can see all moving parts!
I’ve heard that much work has to be done to get 1309 to utilize their whole line including the turn table. How much work has been done and has yet to be done I couldn’t tell you.
They ran mountain thunder backwards often with the diesel probably providing dynamic braking and visual requirements.
@@RailfanRowan I understand that they need to re-grade the approach to the turntable to allow 1309 to use it.
