    Toxic used in the context of behavioural traits was first used by a female US sociologist researching work environments to characterise all-female workplaces. She used the word toxic because toxicity is often not visible to the naked eye - just like the social control, exclusion, back stabbing, denigration, and so on, that her research found to be common and pervasive in those.
    Feminists quickly realised that these findings were a threat to the narrative; That women are victims of suppression and transgressions coming primarily from men. So they quickly flipped the script and came up with the childish construct "toxic masculinity", which is sort of off, since male negative behaviour is most often open and in plain sight. Expression is just dumb.
    Sara Pascoe is quick and very funny, love her! (sic)

    What I don't get is why toxic masculinity exists but toxic femininity doesn't.

    • @ellielouise7005
      @ellielouise7005 Год назад +26

      it does - jealousy/competition between women, the ideal of 'the perfect woman', women always needing a man etc, its just less of an issue because women aren't in as much power as men and the toxicity doesn't end in violence. imo of course!

    • @SquidandCatAdventures
      @SquidandCatAdventures Год назад +9

      Because admitting weakness is a socially encouraged trait amongst women and between women and men, so you don't get that same issue of leading to aggression and violence. Same with experiencing and expressing emotion. There's also how those social influences combine with testosterone for men. This is the phrase we have for those sorts of social influences that lead to aggression and violence. Masculinity itself is not toxic. Toxic masculinity is that particular aspect.

    • @junbh2
      @junbh2 Год назад +7

      The discussion of toxic femininity predates the discussion of toxic masculinity by many decades. A HUGE part of feminism in e.g. the 1970s was about explaining how the pressures women faced to 'act feminine enough' were incredibly toxic and harmful. The 'new' thing was pointing out that something similar happens to men as well, with different details and different but equally toxic results.

    • @nicosmind3
      @nicosmind3 Год назад +3

      Look at surveys of workplaces, women prefer working for men than women, toxic feminity exists, and masculinity is more often a positive than negative.
      But these people just want to attack everyone. Imagine attacking a person cause of their personality type, there's plenty of women too who don't like sharing emotions. Are we meant to do stuff we hating doing cause someone labels not doing that as toxic??? Quite the opposite, Sara's behaviour is toxic. Let me do what makes me happy and lead my life as I choose.
