Cheap Wine was a single from their 3rd album East. The band formed in the early to mid seventies, had a couple of early line up changes before they signed their first recording contract in 1978. They first broke up in 1983 but have reformed with the original lineup several times and even recorded some new albums during those periods together. The drummer Steve Prestwich passed away in 2011 and Charley Drayton has played drums for them during subsequent reunion tours. The last album and tour from the group was in the Australian summer of 2019/20. It's unknown if the band will do another album and tour but they have been doing one every four to five years so I'm hopeful of another. First saw them play in 1978 when I got into a club to see them when under aged and last saw them in 2015. Their live shows are something else. Here is a clip of them from 1978 ruclips.net/video/LFWzphPrAxw/видео.html Here is probably their best live clip from 2003 ruclips.net/video/TdVRNDnTKTU/видео.html Both these are rock songs but they have a lot of variety.
Many EXCELLENT Australian singers and bands were not known in other countries because they were quite happy to stay in Australia and do their thing. That is why they will not have a large following and also Australian people already have their records, tapes and CDs etc. to hear. What is sad is that the rest of the world missed out on them. Thankfully they are being discovered by first-time reactors on You Tube, like yourselves, from other countries now, and enjoyed!
You make some interesting points about the drumming in this song. Certain songs of Cold Chisel really showcase the amazing talent each band member had in different ways. I remember I was listening to one of their lesser known songs called Standing On the Outside" and in the song and music I remember thinking it captures like four diffeerent members of the band with different brilliance all in the same song, which is hard to notice with most music bands. It a great band with so many different elements where different skills shine through on different songs. Sometimes I just love the keyboards and drums in certain songs and the lead guitar and bass and singing in others but over a whole album or concert I marvel at so much talent in the one band. Sadly, the drummer Steve Prestwich is the only member from song no longer with us. R.I.P Steve Prestwich
This was a huge hit and had lots of radio play. My guess is, it's lack of views might due to the band not being very well known outside of Australia and N.Z. and everyone who's into this band would have this song in their collection anyway.
Cold Chisel came to New Zealand to play in the Sweetwaters festival in 1980, they played on the last night, we managed to get a great spot down the front as most of the festival goers went home as it was the Sunday night, I'd never heard of them before but I can guarantee all of us who stayed on to watch them where blown away, they were just amazing live, been a fan ever since...as a side note, another Aussie band Id also never heard of played before Cold Chisel, also played an amazing set they were called Flowers back then, later changed their name to Icehouse ..little did we know but we watched 2 absolute iconic Australian bands in their early days back to back, such great memories, we drove down in a mates van to that festival as 17-18 year olds, camped in the hills behind Ngaruawahia at the festival and saw great Aussie and NZ talent over 3 days, ahhh the good old days
Safe to say, this would be played at every Chisel concert and most every Aussie bbq/party. Likely to get a 2nd and 3rd playing at parties once a few more beverages have been consumed and every remaining party goer becomes a rocker in their own right
these guys were my first exposure to reggae ...even tho they are a rock n roll band ...they made me realize how cool that style could be in a rock context . Well....them, clash and the police
This was big in New Zealand when it was released. I remember this was a drinking song, especially the chorus. Cold Chisel was well loved in New Zealand. Jimmy still does the odd concert tour here. You definitely need to do 'Bow River' as soon as possible, as well as 'When Something Is Wrong With My Baby'. Or why not have a Chisel week?
Hi guys, this was actually a very big hit here in Australia. One of their early ones. You must do Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham doing When something is wrong with my baby' (live) and Cold Chisel's 'Bow River' Make sure it is the Ringside version. The official one is no where near as good
It's interesting you say that about the drumming, because I was going to say I like it when early Jimmy sings a little jazzy. Again, we have a parallel with The Police.
It's very endearing how your beautiful lady knows how to boil your sentences right down to such a clear and simple few words!.😆 You compliment eachother nicely!.👍 I think "syncopation" is what you were looking for regarding the drummer's off-beat timing. Your comparison of the drummer from Police is a good one.👍👍 No doubt Jimmy was a classic lead singer "back in the day" when it came to the excesses of a leading Rock n Roll band, but he managed to survive and thrive as a great family man and very much loved talent and person to this day!. Thanks, Zebedee from Oz.👍
Was a big hit! One of the classic Chisel's songs. Being a Countdown performance, the vocals are live but most likely the music is a track. I could be wrong. Also Cold Chisel rarely played on Countdown as they were not allowed to play live.
No, this song was and still is one of their best known and loved. What you watched was their Countdown performance, which would not have much views. Countdown was a music video show in Australia so unless you're old like me, you wouldn't watch that version lol
Looks like it's mimed as it sounds like the studio version, something that Cold Chisel hated so much being a live band so they protested at the 1981 Countdown awards.
I do not know about clicks on original video as actually never seen this video of Cold Chisel over the decades so it must have been found in some archives of a tv station and only uploaded recently. In fact it a famous music show on our tv's from 1980's and earlier decade and I always thought they never appeared on the show so it interesting to see they actually did around 1980.
Please react to: Don Walker and Michael Hutchence - Speed Kills (1982) Don Walker is the Cold Chisel's keyboard player and Michael Hutchence was the leadsinger of INXS.
This is not live. Bands mimed on Countdown. Definitely the album track. Steve Prestwich was a very creative drummer. Each band member is very talented. Ian Moss on guitar has an incredible voice too.
I was wondering if you would like to react to an up and coming 3 sister Rock trio from Monterrey Mexico they have since released their 3rd and latest album Error in 2022 and their first under a commercial label and was wondering if you would like to react to them especially given they are in the process of organizing a European tour in 23 some suggested songs from the album would be Disciple, Evolve, choke, Money and Error
Cheap Wine and Khe San are Cold Chisels 2 biggest and most important songs. Their first 2 singles and both Australian rock anthems. Formed in 1973 as a heavy metal band, their success didn’t arrive until after Jimmy Barnes joined as lead singer...... By the late 1970’s they were Australia’s biggest and most popular band Live ......but little recording success and no NO top ten singles. Also no NO 1 album until their 4th album , Circus Animals , was released in 1982. Their first single was Khe San....... an ANTHEM that just made the local top 40. 2nd single was Cheap Wine in 1980 that made the local top 10 at only NO 8...... another ANTHEM. Simply....... the Jewish rulers of Australian music and radio did not like Cold Chisel ....... The Australian public loved them and flocked to their live gigs. Cheap Wine is still an Australian Anthem but rarely heard on radio...... radio playlists are dominated by the latest releases, and mostly off compilation albums..... never the original album and rarely the original single. Some Cold Chisel fans probably haven’t even heard Cheap Wine. Others would have heard it, but not know it is Cold Chisel. They only know Barnsey’s throaty bluesy growl..... not his sweeter rock voice. Listen again..... this is his sweeter voice as per Forever Now etc.
Unfortunately this clip is a mimed version from 'Countdown', which was the big music show in Australia from the 70s into the 80s. The show was obsessed with control and they pressured for mimes. Australian acts generally HATE to mime. Chisel won a heap of awards for the album this single came from in 1981. At the televised awards ceremony they demanded to play live. They changed the lyrics to attack Countdown avd the TV Week magazine about being exploited, and smashed up some instruments. Saw it live on TV that night and loved it! Gets interesting from about the 2 minute mark if you haven't seen it. ruclips.net/video/kAQLkTdQHpA/видео.html
You just reacted to live vocals over the single soundtrack as performed for a studio audience. That was definitely not “live”. You just heard the single, kids. Cheap Wine was a single from Chisel’s third album, East. Chisel started in Adelaide around the mid-70’s & played heaps @ my local, The Largs Pier hotel. Punch that into RUclips & you will find it. The best track on their fourth album,Circus Animals, is Houndog! React to the live version in the round 2003. P.s. Just buy the Last Stand DVD from the band online & stop scrounging for money on the back of other’s IP. The DVD is worth every measly cent. You should be happy just to find a bunch of grand dad’s you can admire! R.I.P. Steve Prestwich, backbone extraordinaire.
Anyone can write boring music of no quality and all musicians can play it. The beauty of jazz is it is not so easy to write and many great musicians admit they CANT play it. A controlled off beat , anything surprising or different, can transform a good song into a masterpiece. Jazz grew from the blues because the blues has rules.....very strict and restricting rules. 8 bar , 12 bar..... WTF !!! If it sounds good then play it...... no one wants to hear the rule book. lol
"I had a friend, I heard she died. On the needle she was crucified". Some of the best lyrics, simple, poetic.
Their first top ten hit and second highest chart single. This song was DEFINITELY a hit

That's off a tv show called Count Down a very popular show in Oz , the host Molly Meldrum is an Australian icon in the music world

I think the studio version is better.
This was very popular in its time permanently on radio stations through out Australia
Cold chisels live concert at rock palast Germany in 1982 is epic. It's on RUclips.
It's interesting you say that about the drumming, because I was going to say I like it when early Jimmy sings a little jazzy. Again, we have a parallel with The Police.
Check out "Bow River" live in 2005. You will be blown away.
100% ❤
Man what a band. Check out “bow river” live in 2003 ringside

I thought you would of noticed that his head band was upside down if you look at the Japanese writing.
Try khe Sanh or bow river buy them

I will say one thing..... if this song gets played in a pub on the juke box, EVERYONE knows the chorus :D
haha true!
I know what you mean mate lmfao..... the oldest video but the youngest you have seen the band members :D
