    By far the most reasonable nutritional advice on RUclips! I love the fact that you are wary of the idea that everything has to be top-shelf, grass fed, organic stuff from Whole Foods. Top quality foods are all well and good, but everyone can afford to eat well---just cook your own from scratch and you'll be way ahead of the game.

    When I began keto in April of 2020, it quickly became evident to me, if I had food in my house, it would be eaten.
    So I made my house into a food rehab. Luckily, or maybe not(?) 😮, I live alone. I removed all foods. I would pick up what I'd eat that night (OMAD), prepare and eat and no more food.
    It worked for the time I needed it to. About 9 months.
    Now, maintenance is hard, but doable. 😁

    • @makaisenki

      Should even out over time, the trick is your body has to reduce insulin enough to stop pushing all your glycogen/glucose etc into storage, and your body has to rebuild its gluconeogenesis hardware so that it can take protein and fats and make your base amount of sugar, and your mitochondria has to adjust to burning ketones and trigs again.
      Then theoretically when you are hypoglycemic now you will actually end up with those levels becoming your new baseline levels.

    • @_Solaris
      @_Solaris 7 месяцев назад +9

      I had bouts of hypoglycemia long ago when I ate the standard American diet.
      Hypoglycemia became a thing of the past when I embraced ketosis.

    • @makaisenki
      @makaisenki 7 месяцев назад +1

      You might be able to get away with 5 more grams of sugar, like maybe use up some of your more sugary seasonings, cut out cinnamon and allulose because they drag glucose out of you.
      You might find luck making a longer time gap between breakfast and lunch, until you can skip lunch without hypoglycemic events.
      Or you could use half and half instead of heavy cream or, I dunno there's a thousand ways to do keto right. It could be fibrous veggies are the problem, just gotta experiment to be honest till you find what works for you under 30g.
      Try to have your carb intake around when you get light headed. Especially if your job is active you just aren't releasing the glycogen and glucose fast enough to keep up.

    • @louisacapell
      @louisacapell 7 месяцев назад +9

      @makaisenki I think this is bad advice. This would just drag things out longer.
      It's better to just keep going the way he is and keep reducing sugar so his body can get used to the normal blood sugars And stop sending an army of insulin.

    Dr Westman, you need to clarify that "eating McDonald's burger" means eating only the hamburger patty. I know it seems self-evident, and you would think that it would go without saying, but many people will not know that you mean only the meat part when you say "burger." Burger is the whole thing, with buns, sauce, etc. Also, FYI, McDonald's hamburger meat doesn't have any fillers in it. It doesn't have "green slime" or anything else. You are usually pretty specific about your language, so you should be specific about these things too, IMO.

    You are one of my hero’s in this space. You Dr Chaffee and Bart Kay. I love the message you put out of protein comes first and don’t add fat just to add it. I do wish you would reconsider the idea of insulin resistance. Bart Kay is explicit where he states the cells lock out all energy when they are replete. To me when you say insulin resistance it makes it seem as if the cell can take more but it chooses not to. Using the stomach as an analogy, when the stomach is full you have to allow time for the food to be processed and emptied before you can eat more. Is the stomach being food resistant when it’s full? I think people need to acknowledge they eat too much fuel and not enough nutrients as a reason the cells get full with fuel and we cannot act as if unlimited amounts of fuel can be processed by our cells and we don’t need to be concerned with the limitations.
    My two cents, have a good day.

      Ben bikman explains how exogenous insulin works. When it’s injected, it acts on the liver to stop the liver from breaking down liver glycogen (which would send more glucose into the blood)
      It doesn’t actually increase cellular uptake, but keeps the sugars stored in the liver.
      Hope this helps your conceptualization. I found it a bit mind blowing.

    I Mean Dr. Jamnadas has good points and he is on track, if you eat once or twice a day you will get away with some carbs, he is right that the liver will store a certain(small) amount of glycogen as will our muscles, that isn't really a problem, it's just glycogen the body won't create through Gluconeogenesis. and eating whole foods will automatically make sure that you're not eating a ton of carbs. So basically he is going for a low carb approach of ~100-150g of carbs daily with a fasting window. That can work and it's still a keto type of diet in my book. It's not ideal but it will be 100 times better than eating processed foods full of sugar(they all are).

    Yes, grass fed beef is healthier but by how much? That's the big question, I'd go for 1-10% at most. Omega 6 Fatty Acids in the fat of animals we consume aren't the problem. Our bodies can handle that, it's the insanely large amount of Omega 6s in processed foods, also beef in general will always have a very beneficial Omega 3 to 6 ratio, even if it's from a grain fed cow. Poultry can be problematic but you can always choose to not eat the skin with the fat and get your fat elsewhere, from butter, lard, beef tallow for example or coconut oil.

However, an incorrect ketogenic diet leads to kidney stones in about 1 in 20 children. This risk can be mitigated by administering potassium. Taking potassium sodium hydrogen citrate can prevent the formation of kidney stones from renal microcalcifications.

      According to the BMI calculator, even at 170lbs you are still in the healthy range. I changed the numbers to find out what the lowest for the healthy range is and it is 155lbs. 150lbs is underweight. Dr Ken Berry is often heard to say to "lift heavy things" to build muscle (which can increase your weight).

    • @jakubchrobry3701
      @jakubchrobry3701 7 месяцев назад

      Sounds like you need to lift weights. Why are you on a keto diet? To rectify a health problem? I ask because most people use a restrictive diet like keto because they are overweight or have a health problem like T2DM or epilepsy. Nothing wrong with that.
      Personally, I have to make sure I eat. I'm 6' 2", 59 yo and got down to 156 lb when I stopped exercising and became sedentary during the covid shutdowns. I got back to the gym doing squats, deadlifts, etc and started eating more. I got up to 194 lb after a year of a bulking and lifting weights (1st bulk of my life and the most I ever weighed). I cut back to 185 lb and 14% body fat. I ate a clean whole food plant only diet. There's a lot of calories in grains, beans, purple potatoes, nuts, seeds, etc. I'm not sure why people demonize these foods. You just have to start slow and gradually increase them for your gut microbiome to adjust.
      There's also a lot of calories in meat. Do you not eat meat? I'm confused where the problem is. Or are you just bragging? Because I wouldn't brag about being that skinny. I'd be concerned about sacropenia. Are you all hunched over?

      You could possibly eat hard cheese as your dairy. 8 ounces of cheddar has over 100 grams of fat (or over 900 calories for those who use calories as a metric). It's very compact and easy to eat (for me, anyway). I'm on a carnivore diet, and I use cheese to modulate my weight; I eat it, along with extra protein of course, when working out hard and want to gain weight, and stop eating it when I want to stabilise. Just a thought.

    • @ekondigg6751
      @ekondigg6751 7 месяцев назад

      On not being able to eat dairy, it's usually due to lactose intolerance. If that's your case then try hard cheese: it has been fermented long enough that there's no lactose left, but plenty of fat (and protein). One of my favourites is Comté, at least 16 months old (living in France). But if you're one of those rare people who can't handle casein, then even long-fermented cheese may still be a problem.
      Otherwise, increase fat consumption. That would be a bad idea if wanting to lose weight, but you want to gain weight. You can add extra butter, lard or tallow to your meals. A little more expensive options are olive oil (real, not fake) and coconut oil.

    • @jakubchrobry3701
      @jakubchrobry3701 7 месяцев назад

      @@ekondigg6751 Centrifuged tallow and lard are becoming the go-to option in the bodybuilding community. Both tallow and lard are only around 40% saturated fat. You can get rid of the unsaturated fat with a centrifuge. You need to heat it first, of course. Now you got close to 100% saturated fat. You can't get better than this. I don't think seed oils are a minor issue. I don't think eating McDonald's food is a minor issue. We do have to meet people where they are and it is better to eat McDonald's burgers than to eat fries and drink Coke but for long-term health we cannot eat McDonald's burgers and use seed oils, these foods do not support health. The fact that something is not as bad does not make it good.

    If you can see what the root cause of modern disease is, like Ivor Cummings says, you have over 2/3-rd of the problem and that is carbohydrates. And you need energy from somewhere so fat is great. I love carnivore although I might slip in some sauerkraut or lettuce or an occasional strawberry, but just the ground meat and almost anything made from that although I also love steak and liver (I consider that a delicacy).

So I love that I have a choice even in a fast-food-joint.

    Is it advisable for me to take potassium sodium hydrogen citrate as a precaution against kidney stones, which may arise from renal microcalcifications while on a ketogenic diet? I haven't experienced health issues in the past, but I am concerned about this potential risk. I understand that the problem of kidney stones was particularly noted in children with epilepsy, possibly linked to their medical history or medication side effects, and potassium was effective in preventing these stones. However, is there evidence to suggest that individuals without any medical history are at risk of developing kidney stones while following a keto diet? And if so, what measures should be taken? Does this necessitate the use of potassium supplements?

      Hydrogen peroxide can kill microbes on food, which might contribute to better gut health. However, the direct correlation between this and the health benefits you've mentioned isn't well-established in medical literature. It's also crucial to note that hydrogen peroxide, particularly at high concentrations, can be hazardous and should be handled with extreme care.

      In reality, sugar addiction is not a physical dependency, unlike dependencies on substances such as opium and other drugs. Sugar addiction is primarily a psychological issue. The notion that sugar is as addictive as opium is more a result of propaganda; it is not accurate because the physical reactions and dependencies are not comparable.
