I’ve used both the old and new versions of the ST. They are heavy, but they work. I HIGHLY recommend using the neoprene Crudbuster boot to keep the mud and wheel spray off the bushings. My friend did not use one, and his first made a bunch of noise, then failed/got too much play on the bushings. The crud buster only fits the old model: I made my own for the new model. I also use a Specializd CG-R carbon post on another bike and it is great. It doesn’t have as much travel, but it weighs little more than a regular carbon seatpost. I’ve heard that big boys like them, but little folks don’t: I’m a clyde, I it’s wonderful.
I suppose they are a bit heavy compared to a regular seat post (580g vs. 240g average), but honestly the weight of that seat post is the least of my concern by comparison to all the other junk I'm likely to put on my bike when bikepacking, hahaha. I'm a classic over packer :)
I am a fan of the Thudbuster .... as you mentioned, my older one did have to be repaired... I've put it on another bike since then. my thought: my new selle anatomica flexes quite a bit, AND I use higher volume tires... giving me a fair bit of cushion. However, my family has a few Trek Fx 7.2 and 7.3's... on which we run high pressure Schwalbe marathons... they relay a lot of the road/trail features right up to the caboose, so my thudbuster goes on that sort of rig now.
My Fargo come stock with one. Probley first generation. It did not really do anything good for me. Actually always seemed to be adjusting my butt on the seat as i was riding. Went to a regular seat post, sold it etc. The newer ones may be better but I did not try one out. I think it is all in the seat and position.
I find your video very helpful, but I have the following problem: The seat makes a cracking noise whenever I go over more substantial bumps. Have you hade this problem? And if so, how did you fix it?
So many places a creak from a seat post can come from. First thing I would do is clean and lube the seat post and all it's components. 2nd is to mark, clean, and lube all the saddle connections, including the saddle rails. Also don't forget where the rails contact the saddle to use a spray lube on those contact points under the bottom of the seat.
I have the same issue. The crack noise is coming from the loosening movement of the double cone angle adjustment of the seat. The given max 18 Nm Torque is too less for getting the double cone fixed. I have now taken more torque even knowing that this could damage the thread of the screw. But if I wouldn’t do so the component can not be used.
@@burk5826 yes, same. When I first got mine the inner saddle clamps were stuck into the seat post and wouldn’t budge/rotate. Company said to loosen them by tapping out internally with a tap of a screw driver through the opposite side. This worked, so I put a dab of grease on them, reinserted, and leveled and reinstalled saddle. Then the opposite began to happen. Went on a 20 mile ride and no matter how aggressively tight I tightened the bolt, the saddle kept moving rotating upwards every tiny tiny bump. Had to loosen, level, retighten about 20 times. So I looked up how to solve. I removed saddle clamps and cleaned thoroughly inside and inner clamps, removed all the grease. Re installed and now seems to be ok but I only went 1 mile. If it keeps acting up, I’ll return it.
I have one with a single bolt, but I can't adust seat tilt at all, the inner channels, I see on your video, rotate within the post, but mine are totally stuck and won't move at all. Only the outer channels move, but this won't adust the tilt of the saddle. Any suggestions?
I had to watch this one again. Seriously considering the thud buster, I have been researching it a bit. I know you are an ECR owner, this is a bike Im highly considering for next year. I looked at the Fargo, Cutthroat, and ECR. Are you completely happy with The ECR or do you feel like you should have went with something else? Im going to have to look back through some of your videos. Love the show.
Is there any point combining crane creek thudbuster with existing short travel rear shock. I'm thinking crane creek to absorb small bumps and stiffer rear shock kick in after elastomer bottoms out. Should I just upgrade cheap stock rear shock(125mm oil spring which barely moves)? My thoughts are the seatpost will absorb the smaller bumps and rearshock to help with pot holes and kerbs.
It’s a great question that I’m not sure I have a good answer for unfortunately, haha. I’d probably lean towards just picking one personally as less points of failure.
Jusst put one on for the first time and I seem to be quite underwhelmed. At 175 lbs I changed to the soft elastomer rated for 10lbs and it still feels very stiff. I was expecting more cushioning but it might be doing more than I think. Will try it out more in a day or two but right now I am disappointed.
Update: I ordered the Long Travel (LT) and I like it much better. The ST seems to take out vibration from the road but that is about it. Not even that good on smaller washboard gravel imo. I can only imagine the ST working for someone who doesn't want to know they have a suspension seatpost installed and only rides on paved surfaces. The LT on the other hand actually does something on the washboard and potholes and holds pretty still in between. I am still getting used to the backward motion it uses when compressing and had to put my seat more forward to compensate for that. Lastly I would not recommend buying directly from Canecreek as they will not let you return a product once you install it. Buy though someone else where you can return if it doesn't work for you.

Good review, Brad. I'll consider the Thudbuster in the future.
I got the LT ! So Great!
Great review! Just ordered one for my Soltera Ebike.
Let me know what you think!

My older one has a bit of side to side play in it…. Maybe what you are describing.

I love the ECR but be aware they are discontinuing it, so you would probably have to buy used.
@@BradBeaird Gotcha, To be honest I cant find a bike anywhere, Its either sold out or not my size. The quest continues.
Helpful video..ty
You are welcome!

Seems like you're kinda on the fence..
Yes I like it.
For the money these suck. They do absolutely nothing but put a big dent in your wallet.
