I'm a roadie but thinking of getting a fixie. I've found that on my bike, 53/17 is a comfortable ratio that I can basically pedal in any terrain I ever encounter. It's always good to know that I'll have a good skidding ratio too.
Keep in mind with a big ratio like that you’ll need more power in your legs to skid it isn’t a huge deal especially since your already a cyclist but just something to keep in mind. hope this helps 👍👍
I think 50/16=82.81 is a bad ratio for acc and skidding. I'm currently using a 48/15=84.66 with 25 tire size, very similar to your ratio (assuming you're using 25s as well) and im not going very far up any hills or accelerating as quickly as id like and i find it difficult to "lock in" my pedals to skid. I think Zack's gear ration of 49/19=68.26 would help you accelerate faster, provide 19 skid patches, and help make climbing easier. Just watch out going down hills.
I honestly don't understand this. How can a gear ratio of 48/16 mean the wheel will lock up at the exact some point every time resulting in a single skid patch? That's impossible.
I currently use 46/16 but I am going to change that soon. You can skid on any ratio. Balls to the stem when you're starting off. As much weight off the saddle as you can.
Hey Zach, i got important question here. I looked up online, googled it. I found a lot of skid patch math etc. However, I dont find any product called skid patch. Is it just something we stick it on the tire? use any possible material ? or there is a thing specialized for fixed gear skid stopping? How do you install it? can you give more detail please? much appreciated.
nikesbeast More teeth is faster like 50/14 thats for track racing for street 48/16.If you were to race someone with a 50/14 as a 48/16 gear ration then you will be pedaling more and spinning out,on the other hand the other people will put a lot of power and get somewhere with a big ratio
@@brizzwizz i ride in quezon city manila not flat also trafic i was stuck with it because it was just given to me and I didn't have money to buy a lower tt like 48 buy after a month i've gotten used with it and didn't mind it much anymore PS: srry for my bad english hope u understand
i too live in an area with lots of hills (from the suburbs to west bank of the city there's a 100m difference) and currently found a sweet spot at 46-18 keep in mind you will be having a hard time pushing past 40km/h on flats with such ratio but you will easily climb long hills at a 23km/h average
The zeal for skidding is broadly a function of the rebellious soul of the toddler. Seriously, fit front and rear brakes. You cannot achieve timely and safe retardation by skidfong from higher RPM (140+). You cannot skid with reasonable safety and alacrity on wet roads You cannot rode close to other riders of relying on skidding. Fit front and rear brakes.
The assumption is that every time you skid, your feet are in the same position. With a 48/16, every time you pedal in a circle ONCE, your wheel moves THREE times around and it end up in the EXACT SAME SPOT. So, if you skid with your feet in a certain spot, the wheel will ALWAYS return to that spot because it cannot coast on a fixed gear bike. Good now?
55 year old - presently riding 45:16. Next spring 2025, I'm considering 46:16. I'm a city rider/commuter.

Do you know why odd numerator doubles the skid patches! Thanks
Oh God, don't accidentally google "skin patches"
46-15! 15 places for fun! Also me chainring is a bit nicer around curbs lol
How to find a website for checking a fixie bike
is 44x14 good? pls answer me
What do u think about this ratio 50/16 - is it a bad ratio? For acceleration and for skidding?
I just got a bike with this ratio and i have no clue ...

What about 48-18 or 48-17? = 18 or 17 skid patches?
U have 3 for both
My bad, u have 17 for the second one
ur actually really funny bro. can't simplify no mo
I honestly don't understand this. How can a gear ratio of 48/16 mean the wheel will lock up at the exact some point every time resulting in a single skid patch? That's impossible.
What app is that
i using cog 19t. what do you thing about 48/18 ?? what is suitable for cog 19?
Guys what's a good gear ratio for skidding? It's too hard to lock up my wheels

@@Jake-pd6ct what did you change it to
@@kecobrt I was gonna change it until my frame snapped and I needed to buy a new frame, so I ended up not changing the ratio.
I use a 46/17 it was too hard on a 46/16
What’s that app
Half hills, half flats. 47:17 on a Wabi Special. 72.59 gear inches
Hey zach, in
Im riding 50/17 help me out. How skid many patches do i have?
17 skid patches.... always the denominator in the simplest form in the ratio.
hi there.. what about a 46-16?
8 skid patches bro
16 if ambidextrous
90% is 46x16. From what I've dealt with
So 49/19 is best?
Depends on what you want

its basically the spot on the tire that will wear out if you skid on the pavement with your tire
h-hes trolling.
3:04 is gibran from woofjkt
fml im on 48:16, no wonder my tire wears out so quickly. lmao
Hey Zach - is it easier to skid with a rear cog that has more teeth?
yes
mine was 44-13 and try to skid but doesn't seem it work tho😌😥so pissed off😂
Just practice. Im in 46:20...i can skid even in low ratio.
Does less teeth mean faster?
No
im riding a 48 16 right now . would it be better to go down to a 48 15 or 13?

nikesbeast * I ride a 48 13, don't do it unless you like being ready to die.
It's not the bow, it's the Indian.
How about 48:17?
17 skid patches, both ambidextrous and not.
I have 52 x 16
pfffft, where the f you riding? All flats??
I mean, I run 50:16, and am riding NYC - pretty flat here, couldn't imagine 52:16 in a city with bridges like here

I live in a area with a good amount of hills, what would you recommend ? I'm running 48-17
Should I lower my chairing and raise my my cog to a 18?

Try a 16
@@joshcevallos880 wouldn’t work well, he should try something like 48/17 or 48/19
48-16 is low for a track bike. Junior riders ride 49-15.
We're talking street use here=not track.
