This usually works with stolen ebay gift cards. In other words, he sources ebay credit illegaly (hacking, scamming, stealing, etc.) and buys large amounts of goods using this credit. You were an easy way for him to turn this fraudulent money into real goods that he can slowly sell off. This also explains why he did not care to pay higher prices (simply out of convenience) and why he had no problem moving onto other sellers on the site.
Essentially you did earn the money somewhat 'illegaly' but obviously no fault of your own. In a way you got lucky to have come across someone like this.

Then shoepalace switched to shopify and the people who purchase the bot for 5k was left holding the bag.

These are a couple likely theories that I have:
1) Those “eBay gift cards” were either purchased off of stolen cards or discounted beyond a “normal” discount I.e. 60-80%. This allows reason why he’d buy them from you for such a high markup above market not including taxes/fees that eBay implements.
2) The less likely theory, was he was consigning these pairs to multiple stories for unbelievable prices. I know consignment was too big of a thing back then, but it is a possibility as I’ve noticed lots of consignment today is also pretty high above market. This consignment, if that was the right theory, could’ve have been out of the states where some of these colorways never release. I’ve been told some shoes sold in these foreign countries can be listed for double the USD value because of the scarcity.
I think you are right, but its both. He was using stolen card information to buy ebay giftcards wholesale, and using them to buy the sneakers, then he was charging a commission fee of like 20% on the sneaker to the people he was getting them for meaning the higher the price the more money he scraped off the top. He likely knew the buyers personally and understood just how much he could squeeze them for.
back in 2020 it was pretty common for ppl to buy specialty gift cards (ebay, uber etc) and refund them and since goat and stockx don't have gift cards he could obtain them so he didn't care about the price offered to him since only gift cards he could procure that would allow him to buy shoes was eBay. I am almost certain he sold all those purchased pairs for 100% profit since it didn't cost him anything to get the ebay gift cards

Likely the giftcards were bought using illegally obtained crypto and he was doing this to easily launder the money. I know a lot of people in that community and they do the same thing, either launder through ebay/amazon or through casino swapping
He was probably a refund scammer. Many scammers that do refund scams pretend to give you money and make you give it back but to make the money untraceable, they make you pay them using gift cards. They’ll often get the person being scammed to go to the store and buy an eBay gift card then send the codes to them.

Earlier today I received an email saying that an eBay case was won in my favor. This was from a week ago when a buyer had claimed that they hadn’t authorized the purchase of sneakers. Since I had already shipped them out on the same day, I just replied to the claim stating so and waited. I feel mush safer selling on eBay now than other platforms not just because of this case but because of Authentication as a whole. After it’s been authenticated, I don’t see how a seller could possible try to scam someone with this in place when even an “unauthorized purchase” excuse doesn’t work.

Buying stolen gift cards using different accounts as old accounts would get banned OR he was a foreign buyer and had a way to get them across the ocean to another country which sells for higher price without paying VAT taxes or import/export fees.

Not sure about this john, but i slot a french guys that pays a lot more than normal slot prices. He said that with VAT he can avoid paying a big margin from the transaction. Could be that or he was scamming ebay gift cards to make quick cash, or maybe he just had a fisical store were he was selling much much higher prices. (I had all of this 3 things happening so can't really tell)
If you would go back and redo it you’d sell ALL to him? You don’t realize how big of risk you took doing that. That is a horrible business decision and if you handle business like that in the future you will lose everything.

I have a story, a release that started and funded my reselling career. A glitch in foot store registers that allowed me to purchases shoes weeks in advanced, I profited $15,000.
I got banned from eBay because of that dude. He closed his server and dodges all contact.
Sold him like 50 Yeezy 500s. Immediately got banned and eBay was saying I was laundering. Can't make new accounts now (even with new EIN, bank, addy...)

they accuired the ebay codes via scams so they have done or have bought from scammers for 40% the value
you never know how things could of turned around, looking back and thinking i should of sold them all it could of just about ended as bad as it did good with all chargebacks claiming all the shoes are fake

He was probably using you to launder money. Losing that much money on pairs is good compared to normal laundering rates.

Ebay gift cards credit is probably bought by cloned credit cards or crypto scammed funds, so basically the guy is paying a premium buying snekaers because they move fast and he can pocket almost all the money from it.

He was either buying ebay gift cards using stolen card details as this is very common in the uk or he was some sort of hacker getting these gift cards.

this guy was a wholesale buyer of ebay gift cards bought by stolen credit cards, he probably paid 40-50% of face value, then turned around and cashed in these shoes on stockx and goat most likely
Fake refund scams get the people their scamming to buy gift cards. ‘John’ would’ve been getting the cards for free, so as long as he had a consistent way of spending them, it didn’t matter what the retail price of the product was.

Botting is dead I started botting in 2020 when bots were cheap and a couple months in botting went crazy I bogubt a lifetime pd for 500 bucks and sold it for 1000 and then bought two lifetime wraths at 700 each and they started killing sites and sold them for 3k each I was flipping bots and renting them out more than the actual releases. I got out of the botting game around 2021 when the prices were high come back and botting is now dead what a time that was.

Lol 100% carded giftcards. Mans buys a cvv2 for say $2-50 and maxed it on giftcards, then clean those through physical goods.. Reason he didn't mind paying more is well, the cvv2/creditcards used to buy the giftcards were not his to start with..It felt illegal because it was.
