The reason the pieces are so abstract is to circumvent Islamic restrictions on depicting humans and animals. Same reason Ottoman paintings look like children's paintings.
Very very complicated promotion rules. I wonder if pawn of pawns promotion rules where invented by Tamerlane during a game that he was about to lose. ;)
If his opponents were smart, they would let him win!!! :) But yes, totally superfluous and convoluted. And the entire sequence from start to finish probably very rarely happened during play. But I still like the complexity, there is something appealing about it.

Well I've never played this before but based on what you've told me, this looks like each game would be so different from the last, and there can be a lot more nuances and a lot more special circumstances per game. Seems like it would be more exciting than regular chess
Hi i have a question if on forking situation Minister is one of pieces still do we have to move our pawn of pawn in that square .because next move our pawn of pawn will be taken by Minister this is terrible .my english is not good sorry for mistake if i did
This is a great question, and the answer is not found in Manuscript 211. It states that when a fork can be made the pawn of pawns must move to attacking square, so my personal interpretation is yes, it must be done even if the pawn is lost.
@@tamerlanechessclub3652 i have another question .when pawn of pawn arrive last rank for first time if there are two or more forking stuations .what stuation does pawn of pawn have to move . And the same question for immobile stuations, or there are two or more forking and immobile stuations. What stuation does pawn of pawn have to move. Those questions confused me so much. I think the player should have choice.
@@muzafferckay2609 yes I agree the player can choose which fork or immobile piece to threaten. Many of these details are not documented in the manuscript so the best we can do is follow what makes the most logic. And I agree with you. I also give the player the choice.

Hi Antillol, there are other sources for the rules, but all those sources are themselves relying on the Ali manuscript. Its the only known source of the rules.
Hi Gary. Thanks for following. The name of the elephant actually is dependent on the region and time period. In India it was likely referred to as "alfil", although once the game reached Persia it largely was referred to as the "pil" which was a word borrowed from another language as there was originally no word for elephant among the Persian people.
Hi again,if one of pawnes is immobile piece still do we have to move our pawn of pawn that square. İf we do our pawn of pawn can be captured by immobile opponent pawn
No, I was reading another translation of the MS 211 manuscript, and the act of moving the Pawn of Pawns to attack an immobile piece or forkable pieces, can be viewed as a voluntary one. You can chose to move it or not when those situations arise.
@@thomaschongs3456 Hi Thomas, yes, according to the other translation that I read. Moving the pawn of pawns off of the immune square can be considered a choice.
The Shah piece looks more like the crown worn by the Parthian Emperors. Maybe that's what it's suppose to be.
Interesting. The only history I could find so far mentions the elephant and carriage. I will have to look into it more.
what a great video about history of chess
Thanks Carolina!
Dabbabe I’m thinking is meant to represent like a stone that would be fired from an artillery peice.
Yeah my understanding is that it can represent any 'tool' or 'machine' used in battle. Stone, catapult, battering ram, etc.
This is the most complicated for of chess but I like it
