About the cubes. The 2nd zipper is used to compress the bag smaller. So if it's not to full you can compress. Hope that helps. Use them all the time especially overseas. Great box, TFS

The cubes are compression cubes so you pack your stuff in the expanded pouch then zip it up to compress down.

Even when it’s full, you can compress to get the air out and square everything off for uniformity. Just don’t overstuff them and rip the zips.

Looks like those are compression packing cubes. Open all the way, fill and then zip. Next zip the second zipper to compress.
