Maybe, but I think this clip more for audience of artists and of course for artists who prefer tiktok audience, who want more streams, not the music, art
Awesome. The irony is that this video itself will go viral while it is taking jabs at the industry’s focus on pushing artists to game the algorithm. What a way to deliver the message and show others there is another route.
The message was understood. Screw the internet. I’m an Artist and in this ratchet world, I will continue to attempt to own back my privacy, so while my private life isn’t your business, My Music is. Long live The Creatives. Bravo.
I went to the one that was at the Riviera Theatre like 2013ish? This was around the time he made the song with one of my former classmates Chance "Life Round Here". That concert had the same vibes but with significantly less people. Im happy to see James evolution over the years being different from most of the other artists out today. One of the best artists imo that hasn't switched up
This is brilliant, a really well made point and such a nicely shot and acted video. It's pretty sad the way that things have gone, but I guess in a lot of ways it's better than it was 20 or 30 years ago when the only artists who could get anywhere were the ones with record deals. There's still some vague whisper of meritocracy, even if it's being suffocated by industry shilling, social media influencer culture and fake streams. I think the best time to be an artist was probably the MySpace era though, somewhere around that time. The labels hadn't really figured out the internet yet, and it was sort of the Wild West. Some of the music was pretty bad but there was just a feeling of freedom and that anyone could make it, regardless of whether or not they were good at TikTok or had a successful Mukbang channel or whatever.
Bro I know this is suppose to be funny but literally this song is deeper than we think. Basically we entered a age where it’s all about fame NOT ART. 😮We do things to PLEASE not INSPIRE. If you’re reading this STAY AUTHENTIC ❤
It's so hard to promote original music, online or in person. I make psychedelic funk/synth pop. But because it isn't the same as everyone else's psych-pop it's been super hard to gain a following. Ive tried ads on all social media across the board. Ive tried selling cds face to face with people. And everything in between it seems. And for me personally it's been 5 years of no reach and little to no community interaction. It can be really hard to stay motivated in times like this. But it's something we have to do 🙏
yo as a loooongtime fan and rat in this social media race myself I wanna say that I appreciate this so much. Not only cause it's relatable and entertaining, but because seeing the personality is actually a real connecting piece. sure the stoicism is always enticing, but seeing the human behund it all gives another layer to the art. To me that isn't a downplay, but an add on.
I am absolutely blown away. James I truly very deeply admire your willingness to stand up against a system that is taking advantage and quite obviously, as you displayed in this commentary, abusing you. you deserve a life in which you can act on your own free will. yes we live in a society in which we cannot deny our responsibilities to one another in the economy, but overall it has always been and forever will be not okay to exploit people ever, for economic purposes or in any situation ever. AND the purpose of the arts has also always been and forever will be to provide commentary on the things we do not like about society, and if art has been commodified so so much to the extent that it cannot deliver this purpose there is a problem. shagging the algorithm is fine if you have a choice, it's not even to shame that. it's moreso if you dont have a choice and it is affecting your ability to be authentic as an artist. i'm very very glad you have been able to make this video and live your truth and im just telling you now i SEE you i FEEL you and i greatly RESPECT you for being vulnerable and making a statement against the system. Bravo James this is truly what artists should be doing. PS. i studied sustainability, business, and systems change so i really admire people standing up to the system. PSS. Have you seen the Chanel de Bleu commercial with Timothée Chalamet? He also wants an exodus from all the baggage of celebrity life. Maybe you should hit him up ;) ilysm James keep sharing your truth because we are HERE FOR IT I PROMISE!
Ok, apart from getting beaten up & re-robbing your stuff back from someone, i resonated so hard with every moment of this - feels more like watching This Is England for the first time than hearing a new JB tune, and it's still a banger the whole time too _(of course)_ This one really clicks with me, and you've already given me a ton of perfect moments sharing your music with people, recorded or live - this is special
Besides the video, which I agree with everyone it is super appealing, well made and you got the message out there. What about this song? This transported me to the early 2000s! I love that bridge starting right at 3min 2sec. Puff superb as always!. A vigorous song for a vigorous statement.
I agree, this track is like a bad trance flashback, with a goofy hamfisted message that seems painfully obvious and tryhard in C U R R E N T Y E A R. . .
This is one of the best videos in along time, the song was amazing and the video is epic. I am so ready for a Fat Boy Slim Era for James Blake, here's hoping!
This is genuine!! The way he exposes what is going on these days on music industry, some artists are losing their esence just for sell and fit. so much stress and frustration... 😓 James I'm with u 🤍🙏🏼
dude been such a huge fan of yours for ages and this hits (literally) so well as an indie musician myself. thanks for always managing to create something new
Amazing, this is literally what I’m going through as an artist. I almost hate that is this way now but I still have to play the game. I’m still navigating through all of this. Sometimes it makes me want to keep all my creations to myself but I know that’s not helping either……
From CMYK to Retrograde to this. I heard 3 seconds of this on the radio today and thought I need to find that song. I was both surprised and not surprised it was James Blake.
I saw James Blake at the Tabernacle in Atlanta for the first leg of his Assume Form tour, and the live version of Are you in Love brought me to tears. Even though there was some drunk lady front row belting out all the lyrics obnoxiously -James was super professional about it.
James, just want to say that I found your music back in high school in 2011 and your music helped me get through a lot of tough times. Glad to see you're taking control of your own direction. Wish you the best. 🖤
This song will be my favorite song from now on, I feel like if it was written about me, the timing is perfect, his graceful smiling face after being hit so many times is what sold me to just be thankful to james blake for writing this song, by the way always has been one of my top 3 artists.
JB hitting the nail right on the head! I absolutely despise putting my phone in front of me and pressing record (different with an actual camera), but that’s all these corporations and algorithms seem to understand. And yet, labels etc. keep wondering why they’re not making as much as they used to or why big artists can’t maintain a steady paying fan base. They swear we’re not organic creatures anymore. It would be nice if they focused on sourcing and developing talent rather than just trying to leech off the groundwork artists now have to do since labels are functionally extinct. I know there’s a way to leverage SM for promo and such, but I will never do a Tik Tok dance or any of the other obnoxious BS folks claim is the only way to make waves. Shouts to Sir Blake for expressing how we organic musicians have been feeling these days. Please keep creating art, the ppl are hungry for substance again.
I genuinely loved it! I left my phone in an Uber once and I was both impressed and shocked by how quickly I got it back. The phones have imprinted on us. We can’t lose them…. Not even if we wanted to.
I dont even know if he has access or sees the comments but this is a ab-so-lute MASTERPIECE. Why does it give such a strong 90s tempo and vibe. I saw him stop by the craig david bill board. He knows. He knows the 90s has timeless bangers. I cant put my finger on it but its like; prodigy, butterfly-crazy town, iggy pop, gotta get through this DND, bombfunk MCs - freestyler, the nosebleedsection, your woman- white town. if anyone has song suggestions that send you back to this vibe and style please comment them. I want to make a play list around "thrown around". This shit is insane. I love it james! the message is right in your face.
Gotta admit - the lead up to this release was driving me mad 😂 The hook is so damn catchy and I was dying to hear the whole thing. Of course it was worth the wait! Watching the video turned all the way up I find whole body covered in a *swoosh* of chills several times over. Love!!
I love all sides of James, from Lindesfarme to When The Car Moves Beside You to Don't Miss It to Are You Even Real to Mile High to Say What You Wil to Hummingbird. Is there something he can't do? Producing rap, dance, pop, techno, ballads, piano arrangements.
message loud and clear, we support you james!
Do you think it’s related to his new platforms reaction?
Maybe, but I think this clip more for audience of artists and of course for artists who prefer tiktok audience, who want more streams, not the music, art

This is VERY 90s, its really cool. Love the concept.
