I love the idea of Mikan being an assistant to Hajime and becoming a full on survivor. They both have severe self loathing issues and with support from each other could learn to love themselves. Mikan would have her memories return during chapter 6, the final showdown. Instead of turning her full on crazy, she would be emotionally torn between her old memories with Junko and her new feeling for Hajime. Hajime would have to deal with the fact that his the person closest to him was at one point in a relationship with their tormentor the whole time. She and Hiyoko were gone too soon.
Props to the person making a Survivor Hiyoko Mod where throughout the videos of development that I've seen where they basically rewrote a lot of stuff and changes from Chapter 3 and onwards where you have interesting interactions from I've seen with Hiyoko and Sonia taking her place as the victim and the person making the mod says Sonia's Role will be split between Kazuichi and Hiyoko. It's something I bump into recently and it is interestingly creative with how they use Hiyoko's Danganronpa S sprite because of Hiyoko's inability to wear a kimono during the story.

Personally I don’t mind Mikan being the murderer of chapter 3. My qualms with the double murder aside, I think it leans into the overall reveal of everyone being Junko’ servants really well. The fact that the supposed sweetheart of the group is this deranged and dangerous? It makes you wonder how bad everyone else is in real life and I think it effectively sets off a catalyst of if someone like Mikan can fall into despair, then clearly it wouldn’t be a problem for everyone else in the cast to have been broken by Junko.

This game is still pretty great but for me, the overall cast and story was better in the first. I’m thinking of doing a section for despair girls in the V3 vid! :)
THIS!!! I dropped the series after this one, it was so disheartening to see the plot, gameplay and art style rocket upwards while uhh.. the way it handled women suddenly flew off a cliff. The series increasingly leaned into everyone being extreme stereotypes with only the ones that survive to the end getting a rounded personality. (Well, them and Gundham? Gundham is always a standout) From what I saw of the first chapter of V3 it was even worse, so I just couldn't take it any more. No matter how good the story is it takes me out of my immersion to see one half of the cast being sidelined to boner bait. And it all seems so pointless because the first game was fine at having female characters that were both complex AND dateable anyway. Kirigiri was the most popular in shipping and she has literally zero fanservice! Sakura was adored despite (or heck, BECAUSE) of being a more masculine body type. They made a great game with no complaints at all about the women so I dunno why it had to change. And we never got anyone as unique as Sakura ever again...

What I would’ve preferred they do for Hiyoko and Sonja is in stead of Hiyoko going to the venue because of Sonia‘s suggestion reverse it. Have Sonia remember the mirror go to the venue to get it for Hiyoko and then Sonia be the one ended up being killed instead. This also eliminates the plot hole that I always thought was weird, which was the fact that Sonia would let Hiyoko go to the mirror without her kimono properly tied. Before the trial Monomi could have assisted Hiyoko so she was presentable.

THIS THIS THIS!! I didn't even like Hiyoko on my first playthrough and I STILL hated how she went out! It was such a waste to kill her right as she was starting a redemption arc. It made all her awful behaviour seem pointless cos she never developed through it. She always felt she had potential to learn and grow, it felt purposefully cruel to tease us with the possibility just to kill her. And extra insulting that Fuyuhiko got to have the redemption arc she should have had, with interviews even saying Hiyoko was killed cos they thought she'd be too repetitive with Fuyuhiko. No way!! Both of them having parallel arcs in the same chapter would have been really good! It woulda been interesting to see if they could reach an understanding in the end. Their complex relationship as unintentional cause for Peko's crime, and the victim who lost her best friend because of it, could have been SO good! How would they get in the way of each other's redemption? How would they enhance it? Would they reach the realization at different times, or have some big moment where they're forced to work together for the greater good, and do some badass takedown of a future villain? Heck, if Hiyoko had to go it coulda been thematically awesome to have her sacrifice herself to save Fuyuhiko, finally understanding and forgiving him. (Or the other way around, and she survives instead of him!)
I think thats the only thing i actually agree with you on The bye bye ouchies is probably the worst execution if you dont understand her character and fears And its just straight up weird if you do understand her character and fears Fear of large objects being represented by yhe arms that sprouts up The multiple repeated shots could be a nod to what you said eailer how she had darts throw at her (most likely hitting her arm since thats the part of her body bandaged. I do like the fake out where you think she might get lethal injection or death by impalment but the pay off to that fake out was not good and probably wouldve been better if she got a boring exe like impalement or injection
In all honesty, We were genuinely robbed of an amazing character like Hiyoko. Hiyoko genuinely should have been a survivor because it would be honestly very interesting to see how she would react when she realizes the person she has been bullying and considered to be weak actually has a much deeper and darker side and isn't all that innocent. But what would REALLY made the game better in my opinion is if that Mikan ended up being the mastermind or traitor. Why i say this is because like Monaca Towa, Mikan was only "forgiven" or "cared for" by Junko. And we see in the game and anime how closely Mikan is tied to with despair, even if most of her despair intentions were from brainwashing.
Yeah there was a lot more they could've done with Mikan but just didn't, it's such a shame as well cuz she is a really interesting character, especially in a series like Danganronpa
Tbh i never belived Mikan even if we exclude chapter 3, Personnaly i think she is just someone who loves faking stuff to be seem has the victim so people could get attention at her, which actually explains her clumsyness even tho she is the ultimate nurse and the 2 time she tripped in Chapter 1 but never again after (also im pretty sure Hiyoko confirmed it in one of her FTE, and honestly love her or hate her she made a solid point )

It wasn't necessarily confirmed by Hiyoko, but rather suspected. Obviously, Mikan's clumsiness is a disgusting fanservice tactic used by danganronpa since for some reason, danganronpa likes to villainize victims of SA and abuse. And even if Mikan's tripping is an attention tactic, it's not done out of ill intentions or wanting to be the only person that deserves attention, but it is confirmed Mikan acts the way she does because when she was abused and bullied, she would have the same apologetic and wet cat behavior and never once fought back. Abusers and bullies got tired of her pathetic behavior and decided to just ignore her instead, and that hurt her way worse. So obviously Mikan has a very toxic way of handling trauma, but so do characters like Hiyoko and Nagito. Mikan feels the need to do what she does because she believes being abused is better than being straight up ignored and forgotten

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but I do feel you slightly skipped some developments. Sonia and Akane have subtle arcs. Sonia breaks over the course of the trials, and she needs to accept the reality that someone does kill. Akane had a lot of relevance in chapter 4. Surprisingly, Hiyoko out of everyone plays surprisingly a bit into Sonia and Akane. Hiyoko plants the seed inside Akane's head towards working together being a bad idea in the third chapter that when she breaks down past the fourth trial, it proves she can be hurt and vulnerable - she just represses her bad thoughts so much when times seem better that it does still exist in the back of her mind. Sonia does play a role in how she did contribute to Hiyoko's demise, and there's nothing she can do about it. I'm not saying they're perfect, but their arcs do exist. Even though Fuyuhiko's arc was very clear with his change from chapter 2 to chapter 3, after that, it's very subtle in how he still develops. So while I'm not saying that aspect is still great, I just think that with some characters you need to dive into more so you get a better understanding (which I recognize not everyone are gonna be interested in doing that). Sorry for my rant. I just thought I dropped in my two cents. Though I 100% agree that Mikan shouldn't have been done so dirty. But I still love her.
No, they are just bad characters. There is this moment when they are suck in the playground where Fuyuhiko tries to bond with Akane over them being responsibles for hurting their friends. Akane being the dumbass she is totally ignored it. Again begining of fourth trial, she says something about avenging Nekomaru before switching back to her always hungry trope. Akane is often compared with Hina, because of very shallow design reasons. But their personalities are nothing alike. Hina is cheerful and bubbly, Akane is obnoxious and violent. Hina's relationship with Sakura is far deeper and interesting than the copy with Akane and Nekomaru. Both during the fourth trial, Hina tries to take the blame for Sakura's death and actively participate while Akane makes a joke about being hungry before being useless for the rest of the trial. Sonia is a non character, bland and boring. Danganronpa female cast derserves better.
@DeardropsRiho while I'm not a big fan of it, Akane still does her job. Just because you don't like the character doesn't mean they're bad. Would I have loved that Akane's repressing her bad thoughts until she feels vulnerable would be addressed? Yes. But we didn't, which is why it's honestly disappointing. But that ties to more about wasted potential than bad characterization. Sonia may be bland, but she's still fun.

Sakura is my favorite female character in the overall Danganronpa franchise. However, my favorite female characters in Goodbye Despair were Ibuki (#2) and Peko (#1).
Kodaka has a problem with writing female characters, even when he tries or has them becoming his favorites in their respective games, they always pale compared to the male ones, that's probably why he never had a contagonist (Nagito/Kokichi) be a female
At one point in time, the character that would become Akane, could've been that role. It's represented in Akane's name, Owari meaning 'end' or 'finsh' and Hajime meaning 'begin'. Akane also has has a simple design just like Hajime which has a striking resemblance to a beta Junko deisgn. She also likes the 'girl with bear hairpin' gift.
@@Super-7327 Akane is still my favorite character because of her own personal story. Her design makes sense because she only did gymnastcs for the money and doesn't even are to train. I did make a redesign for her sometime ago that gave her more visible muscle and shorts.
To be fair, yeah. There are some bad writting choices for characters (specially how their free time events tell more than the actual game) But I feel like just because the freetimes and the main game don’t match doesn’t mean it’s bad I like to explore this different sides of the characters and learn more about them Tho, probably I would have added a bit more time for each character to shine and get more attention, I feel like Hiyoko, Ibuki, Mikan, Peko, Chiaki and Akane are quite the icons for others in the Danganronpa fandom Even in fangans you have similar characters If I could change something tho, would be to make something more with Sonia I feel like she would be more interesting if she interacted with some of the others. Maybe with Akane and Fuyuhiko, since Hajime is already the protagonist And Kazuichi is…. kazuichi Sonia and Fuyuhiko both have titles that they gain because of their families (also Hiyoko, tho I try to stay canon) Sonia and Akane, tho so different, could bond about Sonia’s want to learn about other people besides those with many resources. What could start as a shallow bond to learn about those without privileges, would grow into a friendship difficult to tear
Akane is my favorite character and I agree on her relatonship with Sonia. The little we got of her with Sonia and Fuyuhiko was fun and interesting, it just sucks that with a big cast like this, some character don't get the attention they deserve.
@ I know a bit of it is to not make clear the “survivors” But I kinda feel like it could be better if more interactions with the full group were there Like… in V3, we spend a lot of time with the “survivors” And in THH, chapter four solidifies the final group In Goodbye despair it feels like some members of the survivors never interacted with eachother Even tho, they participated together in the clasd trials and the island events Personal recomendation. Is not that bad to make the survivors obvious if you make them have interesting arcs, interactions and more than just the free time events

Personally I did love the female cast of this game. I prefer them to the first game, but perhaps that's just the result of my attachment to the second game overall- I've had a lot of time to think about them, and maybe my brain's filled in for any deficiencies in the writing. The less obvious deficiencies, at least . . . I think the fumbling of Chapter 3 has a lot to answer for- Ibuki, Mikan, and Hiyoko really suffer for that. Honestly I think Ibuki actually suffers the most from underutilisation out of the group, but maybe that's because her style of humour just wasn't my thing. I wish we could've gotten a bit more of her relationships, or of her more serious side. Minor gripes aside, I do feel compelled to say that I love Sonia. She's got a lot going on- at least as far as I see it- and even if the game pushes her schtick a bit far at times, I found her really charming.
Im gonna say it Miu does the hiyoko trope better They are both foul mouthed but at least miu is smart/useful also if you push back she folds Hiyoko would just double down and start an argument

@@KyokaXiavonthis is based purely on what I'm hearing- I recommend a better microphone. You sound a bit "tin-ny" and it's picking up a bit of echoing. Assuming a full audio rig is not in the budget- make sure your current mic has a pop filter, and maybe work on softening your recording environment? What I've done previously on a budget: created a faux wall with PVC pipe, blankets, and pillows. I also recommend better equalizing added clips to your audio, you're relatively quiet while the clips are quite a bit louder. I hope this was helpful! I can clarify anything further if you'd like, or answer questions more specific to your current setup.
I have to disagree again The despair sickness (cant spell disase) is unique and its one of our first hints into the fact that this world is not real if monokuma can alter people this drastically
sdr2 is my favorite and has my favorite cast, but that's not because of what the characters are shown to be, but because of what i know they COULD have been. the potential was so promising but the execution fell flat for most of the characters outside the ones the game really cared about which were only male. about mikan and the whole chapter 3 thing, i dont think she should have survived, her being the blackened of the middle trial of the game was just right. she's sweet ofc, but it should have been highlighted more how she's actually really messed up, even without being influenced by despair. i thought the despair disease was a good concept, the problem was that it was just too obvious it was made for mikan, yet for most players nagito is still the star of the moment during that entire sequence as well. the foreshadowing for the remnants of despair was pretty well done at the end of the trial, and her beef with nagito in particular was pretty funny, so i just wish she was actually like that most of the time and about chiaki, she fulfilled her role well in the game but in the anime she just didn't work out. before 2016, it was quite obvious that she was never meant to be real, so her entire character in the anime felt forced and put on a pedestal. I'd forgive the retcon if she actually acted like a real person, but even then, i dont think it would work better than just her not being real at all

Honestly, the part about mikan being the blackened being the right choice is very true. Mikan is obviously a sweet and caring character, but it's also obvious that she has a much deeper and darker side to her which is sprouted from many years of torment and abuse. Mikan being a killer in the game feels right because it highlights the fact that despite Mikan's very bashful and demure attitude and personality, she isn't necessarily a spotless saint . In all honesty, no one in danganronpa besides Chihiro, Chiaki, and POSSIBLY Kiyotaka are saints IMO.

Hiyoko and Mikan are living proof of the Case 3 Effect. I’d say even more so than Kiyotaka and Celeste or Angie and Korekiyo.

Both of them having parallel arcs in the same chapter would have been really good! It woulda been interesting to see if they could reach an understanding in the end. Their complex relationship as unintentional cause for Peko's crime, and the victim who lost her best friend because of it, could have been SO good! How would they get in the way of each other's redemption? How would they enhance it? Would they reach the realization at different times, or have some big moment where they're forced to work together for the greater good, and do some badass takedown of a future villain? Heck, if Hiyoko had to go it coulda been thematically awesome to have her sacrifice herself to save Fuyuhiko, finally understanding and forgiving him. (Or the other way around, and she survives instead of him!)

The multiple repeated shots could be a nod to what you said eailer how she had darts throw at her (most likely hitting her arm since thats the part of her body bandaged.
I do like the fake out where you think she might get lethal injection or death by impalment but the pay off to that fake out was not good and probably wouldve been better if she got a boring exe like impalement or injection
In all honesty, We were genuinely robbed of an amazing character like Hiyoko. Hiyoko genuinely should have been a survivor because it would be honestly very interesting to see how she would react when she realizes the person she has been bullying and considered to be weak actually has a much deeper and darker side and isn't all that innocent. But what would REALLY made the game better in my opinion is if that Mikan ended up being the mastermind or traitor. Why i say this is because like Monaca Towa, Mikan was only "forgiven" or "cared for" by Junko. And we see in the game and anime how closely Mikan is tied to with despair, even if most of her despair intentions were from brainwashing.
Yeah there was a lot more they could've done with Mikan but just didn't, it's such a shame as well cuz she is a really interesting character, especially in a series like Danganronpa
Tbh i never belived Mikan even if we exclude chapter 3, Personnaly i think she is just someone who loves faking stuff to be seem has the victim so people could get attention at her, which actually explains her clumsyness even tho she is the ultimate nurse and the 2 time she tripped in Chapter 1 but never again after (also im pretty sure Hiyoko confirmed it in one of her FTE, and honestly love her or hate her she made a solid point )

It wasn't necessarily confirmed by Hiyoko, but rather suspected. Obviously, Mikan's clumsiness is a disgusting fanservice tactic used by danganronpa since for some reason, danganronpa likes to villainize victims of SA and abuse. And even if Mikan's tripping is an attention tactic, it's not done out of ill intentions or wanting to be the only person that deserves attention, but it is confirmed Mikan acts the way she does because when she was abused and bullied, she would have the same apologetic and wet cat behavior and never once fought back. Abusers and bullies got tired of her pathetic behavior and decided to just ignore her instead, and that hurt her way worse. So obviously Mikan has a very toxic way of handling trauma, but so do characters like Hiyoko and Nagito. Mikan feels the need to do what she does because she believes being abused is better than being straight up ignored and forgotten

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but I do feel you slightly skipped some developments.
Sonia and Akane have subtle arcs. Sonia breaks over the course of the trials, and she needs to accept the reality that someone does kill. Akane had a lot of relevance in chapter 4. Surprisingly, Hiyoko out of everyone plays surprisingly a bit into Sonia and Akane. Hiyoko plants the seed inside Akane's head towards working together being a bad idea in the third chapter that when she breaks down past the fourth trial, it proves she can be hurt and vulnerable - she just represses her bad thoughts so much when times seem better that it does still exist in the back of her mind. Sonia does play a role in how she did contribute to Hiyoko's demise, and there's nothing she can do about it.
I'm not saying they're perfect, but their arcs do exist. Even though Fuyuhiko's arc was very clear with his change from chapter 2 to chapter 3, after that, it's very subtle in how he still develops. So while I'm not saying that aspect is still great, I just think that with some characters you need to dive into more so you get a better understanding (which I recognize not everyone are gonna be interested in doing that).
Sorry for my rant. I just thought I dropped in my two cents. Though I 100% agree that Mikan shouldn't have been done so dirty. But I still love her.
No, they are just bad characters. There is this moment when they are suck in the playground where Fuyuhiko tries to bond with Akane over them being responsibles for hurting their friends. Akane being the dumbass she is totally ignored it. Again begining of fourth trial, she says something about avenging Nekomaru before switching back to her always hungry trope.
Akane is often compared with Hina, because of very shallow design reasons. But their personalities are nothing alike. Hina is cheerful and bubbly, Akane is obnoxious and violent. Hina's relationship with Sakura is far deeper and interesting than the copy with Akane and Nekomaru. Both during the fourth trial, Hina tries to take the blame for Sakura's death and actively participate while Akane makes a joke about being hungry before being useless for the rest of the trial.
Sonia is a non character, bland and boring. Danganronpa female cast derserves better.
@DeardropsRiho while I'm not a big fan of it, Akane still does her job. Just because you don't like the character doesn't mean they're bad. Would I have loved that Akane's repressing her bad thoughts until she feels vulnerable would be addressed? Yes. But we didn't, which is why it's honestly disappointing. But that ties to more about wasted potential than bad characterization.
Sonia may be bland, but she's still fun.

@@DeardropsRiho For Akane's conversation with Fuyuhiko, it's not that she doesn't understand him. She knows what he's talking about, but pretends it doesn't affect her and she's strong like she did her whole life. Fuyuhiko even understands this.
I agree 100% with your stance on Mikan. I think she had a lot of potential, and she's one of my favs. It's such a shame the creators used her for fanservice

Kodaka has a problem with writing female characters, even when he tries or has them becoming his favorites in their respective games, they always pale compared to the male ones, that's probably why he never had a contagonist (Nagito/Kokichi) be a female
At one point in time, the character that would become Akane, could've been that role. It's represented in Akane's name, Owari meaning 'end' or 'finsh' and Hajime meaning 'begin'. Akane also has has a simple design just like Hajime which has a striking resemblance to a beta Junko deisgn. She also likes the 'girl with bear hairpin' gift.

@@Super-7327 Akane is still my favorite character because of her own personal story. Her design makes sense because she only did gymnastcs for the money and doesn't even are to train. I did make a redesign for her sometime ago that gave her more visible muscle and shorts.

To be fair, yeah. There are some bad writting choices for characters (specially how their free time events tell more than the actual game)
But I feel like just because the freetimes and the main game don’t match doesn’t mean it’s bad
I like to explore this different sides of the characters and learn more about them
Tho, probably I would have added a bit more time for each character to shine and get more attention, I feel like Hiyoko, Ibuki, Mikan, Peko, Chiaki and Akane are quite the icons for others in the Danganronpa fandom

If I could change something tho, would be to make something more with Sonia
I feel like she would be more interesting if she interacted with some of the others.

Sonia and Akane, tho so different, could bond about Sonia’s want to learn about other people besides those with many resources. What could start as a shallow bond to learn about those without privileges, would grow into a friendship difficult to tear
Akane is my favorite character and I agree on her relatonship with Sonia. The little we got of her with Sonia and Fuyuhiko was fun and interesting, it just sucks that with a big cast like this, some character don't get the attention they deserve.

Personal recomendation. Is not that bad to make the survivors obvious if you make them have interesting arcs, interactions and more than just the free time events

Personally I did love the female cast of this game. I prefer them to the first game, but perhaps that's just the result of my attachment to the second game overall- I've had a lot of time to think about them, and maybe my brain's filled in for any deficiencies in the writing. The less obvious deficiencies, at least . . . I think the fumbling of Chapter 3 has a lot to answer for- Ibuki, Mikan, and Hiyoko really suffer for that. Honestly I think Ibuki actually suffers the most from underutilisation out of the group, but maybe that's because her style of humour just wasn't my thing. I wish we could've gotten a bit more of her relationships, or of her more serious side. Minor gripes aside, I do feel compelled to say that I love Sonia. She's got a lot going on- at least as far as I see it- and even if the game pushes her schtick a bit far at times, I found her really charming.

I recommend a better microphone. You sound a bit "tin-ny" and it's picking up a bit of echoing. Assuming a full audio rig is not in the budget- make sure your current mic has a pop filter, and maybe work on softening your recording environment?
What I've done previously on a budget: created a faux wall with PVC pipe, blankets, and pillows.
I also recommend better equalizing added clips to your audio, you're relatively quiet while the clips are quite a bit louder.

I have to disagree again
The despair sickness (cant spell disase) is unique and its one of our first hints into the fact that this world is not real if monokuma can alter people this drastically
sdr2 is my favorite and has my favorite cast, but that's not because of what the characters are shown to be, but because of what i know they COULD have been. the potential was so promising but the execution fell flat for most of the characters outside the ones the game really cared about which were only male.
about mikan and the whole chapter 3 thing, i dont think she should have survived, her being the blackened of the middle trial of the game was just right. she's sweet ofc, but it should have been highlighted more how she's actually really messed up, even without being influenced by despair. i thought the despair disease was a good concept, the problem was that it was just too obvious it was made for mikan, yet for most players nagito is still the star of the moment during that entire sequence as well. the foreshadowing for the remnants of despair was pretty well done at the end of the trial, and her beef with nagito in particular was pretty funny, so i just wish she was actually like that most of the time
and about chiaki, she fulfilled her role well in the game but in the anime she just didn't work out. before 2016, it was quite obvious that she was never meant to be real, so her entire character in the anime felt forced and put on a pedestal. I'd forgive the retcon if she actually acted like a real person, but even then, i dont think it would work better than just her not being real at all

Honestly, the part about mikan being the blackened being the right choice is very true. Mikan is obviously a sweet and caring character, but it's also obvious that she has a much deeper and darker side to her which is sprouted from many years of torment and abuse. Mikan being a killer in the game feels right because it highlights the fact that despite Mikan's very bashful and demure attitude and personality, she isn't necessarily a spotless saint . In all honesty, no one in danganronpa besides Chihiro, Chiaki, and POSSIBLY Kiyotaka are saints IMO.
