Great video! I am using my Tonexes the same way :) I have them in the FX loop of my Headrush MX5 right now and am experimenting with gain staging. Prior I put them in front of the MX5 and these things really enhance the tone IMO (I mean, most other people won't be able to tell anyway but for me it's fun lol) but inserting them in the FX loop I think opens things up a bit more. It does take a lot of time dialing these guys in but once you have things setup they're amazing units.

I had my Friedman IR-X in the loop of MX5 and it was a pain in my ass. Headrush loop sucks tone (hi freqs). If you listen the output of MX5 with the friedman engaded and then if you listen directly from friedman`s output with the same parametres you will notice the difference. I tried to regulate gain of the loop but it didn`t help me(

@@Arikashirukashi good point. I think i may have noticed something similar. Last i recall though i think i pulled the send gain down -12 and the return gain up +12 and it might have slightly helped. Since writing that post though i went mostly all analog and ended up just grabbing an HX stomp xl LOL

@@jplee3 lol, i’ve recently got a Tonex One pedal and it is soooooo badass in dual mode with some analog pedals. I use it in the end of my chain. 1st channel is 5150 amp for rhythm guitars and 2nd channel is clean fender amp with some reverb. The IRs are the same Marshall cab greenback. Other pedals are Big Muff, Fender hammertone chorus and TC Prophet delay. I use them on clean channel only.

@@Arikashirukashi nice! Any issues with phasing? And if so how did you resolve it? Currently I’m just using one Tonex as a drive pedal and the second as the amp/cab section. It has been working out well but i havent played around with having two amps in parallel and stereo

@@jplee3 i havent noticed any issues yet, it works as a simple chain))) i wanted to buy another one to run them in parallel with some pedals switcher but, unfortunately they are only mono

I was wondering what your suggestion would be for my setup. My Tonex One runs into an Ox Stomp. So I turn off the Tonex One speaker cab, compressor (or at least down, as I'm not yet sure how to save a preset) and also the reverb, because the Ox Stomp has an 1176 compressor and really nice plate reverb. Would you use the Tonex compressor as well? I could imagine maybe being used Pre but not sure it's an advantage or not. And Post seems at best redundant because I'm going into the 1176 compressor (not sure of the chain but i think the compressor is after the cab sim). Sorry I know this is bit off top for this video but really not familiar with compressors to begin with and was just starting to use the 1176 a couple of months ago, and now I have another that's in my chain if I have a good use for (probably not much funk or chickpicken). You're who I found out about how the compressor can be used Post.

Jason how would you use the original Tone X with one Tone X one pedal? 2 units total. I bet many of us have this combination.

I would use them very much in the way I do in this video, but the second pedal in the chain would be the Tonex big boy pedal. Hope that helps!

I considered this - but would it not be a whole lot cheaper just to buy another drive pedal for something like this rather than a 2nd tonex one?

I work in tech and yeah. Their UI sucks, there are plenty of places where the documentation isn’t clear or doesn’t exist, and even their website is obnoxious. They need to desperately hire some UX designers.

Hi Jason, really good information in this video. I don’t have either Tonex pedal and I had a question. Have you done a video or spoke of in other video how the Tonex Big Boy pedal comparison to the Tonex One pedal? Trying to decide which pedal would be right for me. Thanks.

is just waiting to receive a couple of these...is there anything stopping you from putting both pedals in browse mode and having 3 options at your disposal?...can stomp captures go in the preset slot and vice versa? thanks!

    • @jplee3

I think you will be limited by the tactile modifications for EQ, gain, etc. Also, I don't think you are able to lock the pedal while it's in browse mode. I'm not sure if you can tweak the gain/vol/EQ/gate/comp settings in preset mode and then switch to browse mode and have all those things retained (if so that would be great but I haven't played around enough with it to know) - if you can that would be amazing and all that would be missing IMO is being able to lock the pedal (it's very easy to try to hit the footswitch and end up having your foot/shoe brush against a knob and screw your vol setting up).
And yes, you can put stomp captures in all three preset slots. I'm doing this now with a Benson Preamp capture I purchased that includes 3 different presets of the Benson Preamp.
