"It's going to look after you, so you can enjoy your adventure" ... as long as you charge it every 30-60 hours. Another fantastic video Andrew! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the ultra. I think you're right that the size is massive, and I think many people will be turned off by this when they try it on. But we'll see if Apple can overcome this and make big honking watches the trend again.
I was going to mention that, and I have to wonder, where does one charge it when climbing Everest or up to their knees in the sands of the Gobi? They could have added solar to make it truly "ultra".
I have a Casio protrek. Really fun but more of a worry than mechanical. If it runs out of juice then that’s it unless you have access to electricity. It’s a real hassle to find a place to plug it in or carry extra chargers with you. Mechanical may be simpler and do less, but it can do what it does for much, much longer.
Man...I have not been the biggest fan of Apple due to their anti-consumer way of doing their business, but I, a traditional watch guy who just hates Apple overall have to admit this watch is absolutely astonishing. Titanium case, sapphire crystal, and 100m of WR... I have to get myself one. 800 bucks for all of that and all the functions it has is an absolute steal! And we can all agree that that night mode is super sick.
I think this is fine for what it is. It’s definitely not replacing a mechanical watch in my books. But as far as a health tracker is concerned, including workouts, that odd track, swim, dive and for sleep monitoring, this is fine. I do like the Titanium case and Sapphire crystal and the improved battery life. But its too big and i know I wont end up wearing it. So i wont be getting one. Perhaps if they make a 42mm version of this i might give it a go. I just ish people would stop shitting on this and actually try one for its purpose (think wrist computer rather than just a watch).
The idea of the smart watch is fantastic. But it drives me nuts when I’m having a conversation and suddenly the person I’m talking too starts reading their text mid conversation via their wrist.
I have a garmin dive computer, it's basically a fenix 6 with all the features but a full fledged dive computer built in, the small version I have lasts 7 days in smart watch mode, 30 days in power saving, the bigger version is like twice that. I'd say the difference between that and this is garmin is like a field watch or data tracker with smart watch capabilities and this apple watch ultra, vice versa. But I'm very surprised apple has a built in dive computer and can't wait to see how it goes in the Ocean!
Great to hear your thoughts on this one. I’ve never been fussed by the Apple Watch but can see why other people like it. Have seen many wearing both too as you mention.
As someone who wore an Apple Watch before, what’s missing are stories. The Apple Watch becomes worthless after a a few years. Sure will you get updates, yes but you will eventually need to buy another one. The memories you make with your mechanical piece is something you can pass down. That is priceless and more appealing.
@@polygoncoco Provided you set off with 100% charge, which is yet another pita to take care of alongside the phone. Personally, I find it quite off-putting. Plus, it does not force you to have a phone for people with pedestrian phone needs.

Happy with my Garmin Instinct Tactical as a fitness watch (not a smart watch). That's all I need. Not interested in a surveillance smart watch. Thanks Andrew for the video. 👍⌚
Imagine when they manage to make this watch with a type of eco-drive solar charger, or a battery charged by movement similar to a traditional mechanical watch.. that will change the game!
Apple watches, which are really efficient in terms of power consumption, still consume waay more energy than a traditional rotor in a mechanical movement can convert. But your idea is a good one, when this will be possible (saying when, not if), it will indeed be a game changer and will bring a lot more users into the Apple ecosystem.
R2100…I really prefer people wear watches 45 mm or greater. I can see the watch across the room and don’t need to create an excuse to come within 6 inches of the person so I can see their watch better.
First I’ve heard of this edition. Quite impressive, however, my Tissot T Touch Solar Connect watch never needs charging if it gets a couple of minutes sunlight a week. But my Tissot doesn’t come close to all the bells & whistles of the Ultra. I hope Tissot is watching this.
Hello Andrew! I think you could make a review of the Citizen CZ smart, it also have a titanium case, analog and digital display in black and white contrast, with 15 day of battery. The point is Citizen keep the watch concept with "smart" functions. I think it deserves a review of this effort from Citizen
I don’t think of the Apple Watch as a luxury watch, but what it has done to the luxury watch market is remarkable. I can’t tell you how many famous people (including some billionaires) who wear them in public. Those same people used to wear Rolex and other brands.
I have no problem with smart watches. They keep great time and provide all kinds of information and notifications, but the problem still remains that they need to be charged, some daily. That's the reason for wearing a self winding watch or solar with atomic sync watch.
My biggest problem is that it's yet another device designed to be obsolete, and unusable in a couple of years. I already "need" to buy a new phone every 2-4 years, now a watch costing about the same as well? I'll pass.
I feel the same way. I have a collection of watches but my oldest one is a 10 year old Timex Expedition that still runs and its only on its second battery (granted the battery was dead for a couple years but who’s counting lol). That being said, the Apple Watch is for a different audience. It’s cool for what it does, but its not for me.
It's definitely good for a lot of people like me who cannot afford expensive mechanical wrist watches and still want something for our adventures. Although, I have never been a fan of Apple watches because they looked like plastic thrash, this is a game changer.
I’m not sure if it’s how the Ultra is measured, but the regular Apple Watches measurement refers to the top to bottom measurement of the case. The left to right measurement is about 34 for the 40mm versions and 38 for the 44mm versions. So I’m assuming the new 49mm Ultra is about 40-42mm from left to right.
How many powerbanks does an adventurer takes with him/herself to keep this "Tool" running? And how long can you keep this before you have to throw it away?
