One major thing that I've noticed about MMA that you don't see as often with other martial arts is there seems to be no "off switch". I've seen so many times in MMA matches where a guy will clearly be knocked out, and the guy will keep smashing his head bouncing it off of the floor. I'm actually surprised more people don't die in MMA matches. Most martial arts will teach you how to defend yourself, but they generally will stress that you use it as a last resort and you're supposed to have a level of mercy for your opponent (depending on the circumstances). It seems that people that train in MMA, don't really have that off switch. There are dozens (probably hundreds) of cases where MMA fighters really hospitalize their spouses in good domestic violence situations. Broken ribs, broken jaws, broken legs, etc. MMA needs some type of code. People should understand that they can really hurt people and it's not a game. Knowing the appropriate use of force for whatever the circumstances are is important. Not just for staying out of jail, but if you have any type on conscience, it'll haunt you if you hurt someone seriously. Especially if it really wasn't necessary to hurt to them that badly. It's bad for your soul.
That is why traditional martial arts are better for many kids and teenagers to start out with because they have a moral code and positive teachings with the combat techniques. Taekwondo especially. Nobody really follows them though, but if you care you will do it like I do. but yes MMA and boxing have absolutely no morality instilled. It's up to the individual and people will still give bad people fights and teach them no matter what.

This was a great video and I absolutely agree. The mental health crisis going on in the world and especially in the West is really getting more and more extreme. Not only are we seeing it more often due to social media but it's also occuring more often too because of things like social media and just how our society is in general now. We encourage people to be more narcissistic and otherwise mentally ill because then you get victim points. The guys you are talking about that can't regulate their emotions could s any number of mental health disorders such as Bipolar, Borderline Personality Disorder, Schizophrenia, etc. They all have problems with regulating their emotions as well as having extreme bouts of psychotic episodes (where they have a break with reality.) I am dealing with diagnosed Borderline Personality and maybe even Bipolar as well in my own girlfriend at the moment and have dealt with diagnosed Bipolar disorder in a past girlfriend and I suspect Narcissistic Personality or possibly Antisocial Personality in past girlfriends but not diagnosed. These are all very difficult personalities to even be around at all much less in a romantic context because these personality disorders get more manipulative and extreme with their significant others. Anyways, it amazes me that so many of these people go, not only undiagnosed but even unnoticed, at all by the majority of society. Most people are so caught up in themselves and are so uneducated on psychology that they don't understand these personalities and don't even care when you try to explain it and how incredibly dangerous these people can be along with now much of a crisis it really is that they're so prevalent nowadays. Then when you teach these personalities how to fight, that's a recipe for disaster for sure and even worse if they do drugs or drink alcohol which a lot of them do to cope with their mental health problems then their toxicity intensifies exponentially. I think it was a HUGE mistake to shut down mental hospitals across the US. Jimmy, please bring back Fight Quest from back in the day. 😂 I miss that show. That show and your competition, Human Weapon, were the best martial arts shows back in the 2000s.
That's why I say fathers with young children we have to teach and help them create a healthy balance of life and nutrition as well so when shit hits the fan when they are adults they have a great foundation to help them deal with what ever problems they might have
You are totally right. But another sad thing is, most single moms raise those kids alone with no or little child support. And this is the future. Kids are growing up without a dad as an example. Thank you for your comment. 👍
Many people want to fix the problem of police using excessive force by having them all learn jujitsu. The argument is that they will know how to arrest the person without using excessive force and martial arts teaches people to be more honorable. When you have an officer that constantly uses excessive force they use it because they want to and they know they won't be held accountable. If they know jujitsu they will just be better at using excessive force and will more efficient at breaking arms and choking people out.
Thank you for this. I remember some of these guys actually. On the Bellator commentary and Shawn made me laugh when the cameras went to Christie Mack and the crew is saying I don’t know who that is. She’s beautiful, wink wink. You guys made me smile. Truly sad some of these guys and the low barrier there is to get into MMA.
Don't know about bipolar disorder getting worse with age, but it can absolutely get worse with coincident substance abuse and head trauma. And it can be really hard to control, because a lot of the medications can make people feel really sluggish. Anyway, hope Miller's doing better now. He's bright enough that he could do well as a rehab counselor or mentor to people if he stays clean.
I haven't seen the video referenced at the beginning, but, being familiar with Peterson's thought, a principle of his is that that even small improvements in one area of your life tend to propagate positive changes in other areas--hence the famous: "Clean your room."
Rogan is a stooge who says anything. He fancies himself as an expert, and yes, he is a black belt and all, but he doesn't know crap about real fighting. I have over 100 plus reasons to validate my expertise. Combat sports blurs with fighting but is still not a real fight with a real winner. If it were with no rules, a lot of our favorites would have gotten beat in seconds and retired because they can't fight due to an injury sustained.
I used to put fighters mma especially on pedestals like they have to be so internally strong, or have such strong character to accomplish such a feat. I’m not a fighter, but I’ve trained mma and still do bjj( although I’ve taken a break the last few years) I fixed that blind spot. Great video.
Thank you for speaking out on this . I would also laugh when hearing Jordan speak on this matter . I’ve been to a lot of gyms and by far fighters are the most unstable people I know. I’ve found going to tradition martial art schools (non mcdojos) are the most stable

Off topic but it’s nice to hear him mentioned: Matt Horwich is a very tough and super nice guy. He certainly has some ideas that he really likes sharing but he was skilled, great to train with and helped me get tougher.
Brother, you ARE a legend. You showed me SOOOO many different styles. I can't thank you enough during Fight Quest. As a young cat: it resonated with me. You are THE MAN in MMA. You reveal the shit. I was bullied a lot in highschool and you guys were always there for me to watch. Have a great Fall and Winter. We adore you in Oregon. Showing faults is your strong point "why do this, not do that?!? What the fuck?!" The grasp that you contain on REAL fighting is so educational, and fun. You make MMA look like a Bill Nye lesson. I have nothing but respect.. You're ever in Oregon lemme' know!
I met Gerald Stribant in Eugene, Oregon in the Northside when I worked at a gym called International Fitness that used to have a location on River Road. Stribant was teaching MMA/BJJ at a sketchy MMA gym called Rise MMA which was basically across the street diagonally in a strip mall. He came into the gym I worked at selling gym memberships and doing customer service. He said he just wanted to check out the gym and introduced himself as an instructor teaching Jiujitsu at the MMA place. I also taught a self defense/martial arts class at International Fitness. He was really interested to know what I was teaching or what I was doing. He told me he is an MMA fighter and also said he was a Marine Sniper in the war. He was really trying to impress me with that. He even mentioned that he was recently in jail for 2 years. He was saying this all to sound important and tough. I asked him why he was in jail and he said he it was basically bullshit charges and he was unjustly put in prison for killing a man in self defense. He said he had no choice but to shoot the guy and it was a road rage incident. I was surprised he told me all of this. He shook my hand and then left the gym and went back to the MMA place or whatever. When I went home I researched him and found news articles about how he killed a man in Springfield and was arrested by the Springfield Police. He was charged with negligent homicide, but not premeditated murder which would put him in life probably. He got lucky. The news reports said there was some road rage incident and the other guy got out of his car and walked towards him and was going to attack him. The guy was unarmed. I don't know if he was drunk or not. I heard the 911 call, you can hear it too if you look for it. It sounded like he made the call so that he could shoot the guy and the phone call would be some evidence to show he was right, but really he didn't have to shoot the guy and it's weird he felt the need since he is some black belt in BJJ. I was really surprised the gym across the street would actually hire him. I am not sure if he is from Oregon or California. I had absolutely no clue he was related to Raphael Torres! Wow! Later I heard in the local news that a local MMA instructor sexually assaulted a minor or had a sexual relationship with an underage female student. I was even more shocked. That gym later had to close down and Eddy Bravo disavowed them and said they are not longer a part of 10th Planet. The same owner of the gym is a Freemason, owns a really weird pagan tattoo and piercing shop in town, is an open supporter of Antifa and BLM movements and hates conservatives. He started another gym really quick within a year because our International Fitness location went out of business. The owner partnered with some other business Army blue belt in BJJ short roid guy and still claimed to be a part of 10th Planet. They taught both gi and nogi, some kickboxing class and MMA stuff. The gym had really dark and sketchy vibes. I did a free trial and it felt dark and awkward like I just didn't want to be there. I actually had a 6 week free trial but only did 1 and a half before realizing this place is bad news and is full of suspicious and shady people. One girl joined an Antifa protest against pro 2A patriots and threw a water bottle in the face of a middle aged woman and knocked her tooth out. The girl was a blue belt and was teaching a kids and women's class. She was arrested and put in jail for it because of video evidence. The whole gym was really bad and dark and this newer gym also shut down. Some people who were involved with that gym yet again opened another gym in the same location with a new name. Then they moved to the West side of town at a different location. Crazy stuff. No wonder Gerald Stribant was hired to work there. Sick place.

I've noticed recently that not many people do martial that already feel confident and with healthy self esteem. We all are battling senses of inadequacy in some form, real(bullying) or self perceived, and seeking something like that out hoping it compensates.
This is so real. Martial artists can be no different from the tragic artist stories you hear about - they can be talented and work hard, but they fight demons in their mind and spirit.
I’ve noticed the same thing about MMA fighters I’ve trained many different martial arts in my life and MMA tends to have the most unhinged personalities Boxing is second
jordon's right, people are better for it. Anyone who learns dicipline, whether it's through mma or somehting els will be better for it. nothing is abosulte though so it was fun to hear about the exceptions.
Great input! I would say all these guys had dark triad personality traits. One of them is Psychopathy, which quite likely they had. The other pattern you observed where they wouldn't be able to be beaten in training and collapse when confronted with such adversity is probably relate to Narcisism. This means that in their own mind, they have this fantasy where they are outstanding, the top of the heap. But when reality "hits" (no pun intended), it's unbearable because it shatters such narcisistic fantasy. Such people tend to think that the problem is in the world itself, not inside their own inner system. So, actually, they are not typically insecure. They just can't cope with the feedback the world provides them, creating a deep felt mismatch. A sense of "this can't be right!" that disturbs them and pisses them off. Plus, people with such traits tend to be impulsive. Meaning that when they get sad, they may sob like a child, having poor skills in tempering such emotion down. But also, when they get angry, they are much more likely to act it out in quite extreme ways.
I think we have to consider these athletes may already show signs of CTE which alters your behavior over time. Definitely not trying to excuse their behavior but it can’t be stressed enough that getting hit in the head for 20 years will change you.
A video in deep about War Machine makes sense, I'm curious about the other things that you have heard about him being insecure. And yes the whole "I do Alpha Male", changing his name and getting into adult films were huge indicators of his insecurities

This is some top tier content.
Hi Jimmy! Anymore interesting behind the scenes or cultural dark stories of your Fight Quest adventures? Do you still keep in touch with co-host Doug?
I agree. All cops I have trained with were sadists and had little self control, and these were blue belts and higher also
Your content is some of my favorite stuff on youtube, man, when it comes to MMA. I like this more varied approach.
Crazy stories ! Thanks for sharing Jimmy .

Great video, very entertaining the whole time
Don't know about bipolar disorder getting worse with age, but it can absolutely get worse with coincident substance abuse and head trauma. And it can be really hard to control, because a lot of the medications can make people feel really sluggish. Anyway, hope Miller's doing better now. He's bright enough that he could do well as a rehab counselor or mentor to people if he stays clean.
Amazing video Jimmy. As an mma old head,, the many of the fighters you brought up gave me nostalgia
I haven't seen the video referenced at the beginning, but, being familiar with Peterson's thought, a principle of his is that that even small improvements in one area of your life tend to propagate positive changes in other areas--hence the famous: "Clean your room."
Such an important point in the first couple minutes, something I have felt for years when Rogan says BJJ reduces bullying tendencies in it’s students.
Great breakdown. Brought back lots of memories
Great video Jimmy! I would love to see more like this 👍

1st, great vid
I used to put fighters mma especially on pedestals like they have to be so internally strong, or have such strong character to accomplish such a feat. I’m not a fighter, but I’ve trained mma and still do bjj( although I’ve taken a break the last few years) I fixed that blind spot. Great video.
Thank you for speaking out on this . I would also laugh when hearing Jordan speak on this matter . I’ve been to a lot of gyms and by far fighters are the most unstable people I know.
I’ve found going to tradition martial art schools (non mcdojos) are the most stable
I love these stories. I hope ypu an share more
Jimmy's content is by far the best in the MMA space in my opinion. Bro always has the best takes.
He called DDP predictable, said he didn't have any finishes besides wittaker and he was going to lose to Izzy. Then after the fight he said DDP was an outstanding finisher and Tuivasa vs Jairzinho was a very close fight. lol. this dude is full of shit
I’m glad he’s not long winded
Jimmy is excellent, for sure, but he's no Morning Kombat.
@@salvadorpalma8173 Then what are you doing here?

My word man!! This was so damn detailed! I do still root for Mayham. He did some bad shit, but I still root for the guy. He was one of the guys that got me into MMA.
Great video bro
Jimmy is such a good storyteller!
So true about the mentally health getting worse around mid 20s, for me it was late 20s early 30s. Im bipolar and alot of my friends described me similar, i was funny crazy now im just crazy. Hope mayhem miller is doing better, he was always fun to watch and loved bully beatdown back in the day
First person to disagree with something Jordan Peterson said, that I agree with.
Jimmy i dont know if i represent the average of your audience but i would absolutely listen to you talk about literature. A lot of booktube is saturated by a certain type of person and i think it under represents the audience that may have crossed interests in books and fighting like myself, an audience you have the knowledge to represent very well.
Jimmy you’re an absolute gangster. Love your content bro. Thank you
Yet I’ve so far managed to avoid jail!
love story time with jimmy
Sick place.
Wow.. crazy. Chael has talked about this guy on his podcast. Knew him from when he (chael) first started MMA in Eugene.

Another major problem in America is runaway corporate greed. Ever hear of it? It’s entering the 5th decade. Every time I think of corporate greed I automatically think of the UFC. They should definitely be on the list of bad things that happen in MMA
I've noticed recently that not many people do martial that already feel confident and with healthy self esteem. We all are battling senses of inadequacy in some form, real(bullying) or self perceived, and seeking something like that out hoping it compensates.
DDL could definitely play The Judge, but I've always read him as Scott Glenn.
That was interesting. I knew most of it but the personal backstories were cool.
I have boxing first mma second.
@@renegarza793 Boxers tend to come from poor high crime areas so there’s that aspect but MMA just attracts crazy people who love violence

jordon's right, people are better for it. Anyone who learns dicipline, whether it's through mma or somehting els will be better for it. nothing is abosulte though so it was fun to hear about the exceptions.

Jimmy had a show on Discovery?
What a good storyteller 🫡🫵
Awesome stories

Jimmy - funny anecdote about Baroni laughing at Suloev. Suloev went on to become a hitman for the Russian mob, I believe haha.
Jimmy is profoundly intelligent
