Islam in Romania, A Paradise Country For Muslims
If there is the only Eastern European country that is a paradise for Muslims, it is probably only Romania. Here, for more than 10 centuries, all ethnic groups following Islam: Turks, Tatars, Albanians and Gypsies, formed a strong Muslim community. However, economic difficulties in the early 20th century and 50 years of communist regime rule reduced their population. We can still see the remaining Romanian Muslim community in Dobrudja. Here, you will witness the diversity of Muslim society inherited from the Turkish Ottoman Empire. A total of 80 mosques, on average over 75 years old, stand strong and beautify the soul of this area. Meanwhile, people always say 'Assalamu 'alaikum' to anyone.
As Romanian Muslim historian Georges Gregory writes, there are almost no negative memories of the treatment of non-Muslim rulers after the decline of the Ottoman Empire. Instead, there is the King Carol I Mosque in Constanta, which was built in 1910 as a tribute to the Muslim community in Romania. Located on Crangului Street, the architecture of this mosque reflects mixed elements of Byzantine-Egyptian style and a hint of Romanian elements. Inside, the pulpit and priest's chamber are built in the Moorish style. The balcony at the top of the mosque is intended for Muslim women who always attend congregational prayers.
