  • You can learn anything you want in 30 days if you do this one thing.
    TEDxTeen opening music by BlackDoe
Connor Grooms has built a life, and his education, by breaking limits. At only 20, Grooms is location independent, traveling and living around the world as he runs his business online, from Saigon to Barcelona to his new homebase in Medellín. In November 2014, he gained 26 pounds of muscle in a month after a lifetime of being skinny, and wrote the book "Eating for Mass" on how to replicate his results. His book was endorsed by Dan John, one of the biggest names in strength training, as the "missing link".This past June, he achieved conversational level of Spanish in a single month and self-produced the film, "Spanish in a Month: A Language Learning Documentary" about the experience, which has been featured in outlets like Forbes. Grooms has nothing to prove - he does it because he knows that education and lifestyle are your responsibilities.

    Key Messages:
    1. Research what you want to learn.
    2. Find role models and select individuals who have done what you want to learn fast or successfully.
    3. Distill the learning into a plan.
    4. Create a process and incorporate learning into habits.
    5. Stay true to the plan!
    Practice in real-world environment.
    6. Bottom Line: Care for what you want to learn and make it non-negotiable.

I get the impression that what Mr. Grooms says goes beyond self-discipline. Self-discipline requires effort and, for some people, huge amounts of self control. What this young man suggests is to not leave yourself the choice of doing otherwise. That would mean you don't even need discipline, you just have to do what you have to do, like your life depends on it, like you would need that to survive. You wouldn't need self-discipline to survive.

Elif I believe there is such a thing, because you can use a controlled level of intensity to get a point across to you audience effectively, but there is a threshold where it can become a little obnoxious. One thing I learned way to late in life is commit and give all your attention to one thing and be excellent at it. Take school. I went back to College at 40 years old, and I take one course per semester. Two courses and two A's later I sky rocketed my GPA. Next semester, yep one course. Do one thing, and do it well even if it takes longer for the total goal. Do the work even if you don't feel like it.

I liked what he was saying, especially the focusing on one thing. Personally, I have a lot of distractions when trying to do anything and have been known to get side-tracked, before you know it the day is over. So get more done by removing all the things I thought I should do and focus on my main objective sounds good to me.

Not only does he not speak real spanish in the beginning, he also did not explain how he made something non-negotiable. He first used the example of going to work. We do it cause we have to, meaning there will be negative consequences if we dont. When it comes to personal stuff we want to achieve, what exactly makes it non-negotiable? Most people can say "I will just start doing this or that..." and they really want it but he doesnt explain how to develope this sort of selfdiscipline, where you are not overwhelmed by the power of feeling tired, umotivated or distracted. The non-negotiable status of something has to come by putting a form of "punishment" on it or not?

  • @MegF142857

He isn't a real nightowl, if he can just say "I'm getting up early to be more productive". A true nightowl won't be more productive, even if they get up. There are genetic circadian rhythms that are true nightowl in nature. It is counter productive to fight your natural sleep cycle, IMO. -- This attitude of "all in" for 30 days with obsession may be useful in limited fashion, but not a way that I would live going from one thing to the next with that long a list. -- I would have liked to hear him actually speak some Spanish (more than a half sentence) and do some pushups. Is he able to carry on the language and keep the muscle before moving on to some other topic?

This is awesome Connor, but how do you make it non negotiable? Do you set a punishment ($500 to the tutor guy)? Or do you just change your mind set?

Amazing speech. And he's absolutely right, dedication is key. However.....did he just say he moved to the country and then had a private tutor for 3 hours a day?! My day entails waking up doing 8 hours at work plus overtime, coming home dealing with screaming kids fitting in an hour of my own time sleeping. Then rince and repeat...I'm not sure if I can really follow his model.

But how do you make it non-negotiable?

    • @calistafalcontail
      @calistafalcontail 2 года назад +1

Exactly my question too. He did not explain how he made something non-negotiable.

You just judged HIM based on his voice. So by your logic if someone said you were about to be hit by a bus but you didn't find that voice appealing you would just stand there and get hit, brilliant.

In my experience it's a myth that you can learn a language in thirty days; if immersed you can get some basics down in the present tense in a month. After three years of studying Spanish I could use a solid thirty days just to study the subjunctive.
I think that telling people they can learn anything in thirty days sets them up for disappointment.
