  • This is a tribute to the wonderful Spanish soprano Victoria De Los Angeles. Los Angeles enjoyed her best years during the 50s and 60s and has made exceptional recordings of "La vida breve", "La bohème", "Pagliacci", and "Madama Butterfly". These include some great recordings with the legendary tenor Jussi Bjorling.
“Bailero” is a from a collection of folk songs from the Auvergne region of France. The collection was “Chants d’Auvergne” and was written by Joseph Canteloube between 1923 and 1930. The original “Bailero” was written for soprano but there have also been other interpretations for instrumental or choir. Enjoy!

The DIVINE Voice of VICTORIA DE LOS ANGELES is the clear breath of voice that is PURE life. I have had the most amazing gift of hearing her live ( in many concerts and greetings) in my own life which is now ending. Hear this "BAILERO" (CHANTS D'AUVERGNE) i

In the early seventies when I was working at Deetjen's Big Sur Inn as a wine steward we would always listen to nothing but baroque music at breakfast in the morning when instead of serving wine I would make espressos, and the one of the best of those baroque songs was Canon in D major by Johann Pachelbel, which was new then and hadn't become so popular, and we played it often, thanks to me because I liked it. Robert Redford came in a few times where he was going over scripts by himself at one of the back tables, and asked me what it was, and so I guess he must have liked it since he put it into the score of his movie 'Ordinary People'. But what I remember most from that time was this this Joseph Canteloube song sung by Victoria, but since it wasn't baroque we never played it. I would just listen to it in my off hours, and relax amidst the giant redwoods. I sometimes wonder if I had been allowed to play it then if it might have become another theme song to another movie....

I hear so many gorgeous overtones in her voice. It's unlike any other performance of this song I've ever heard. On the final note of each line, I can hear a note an octave higher - an overtone, magically produced by some trick of her voice. It's eerily beautiful. NO OTHER SINGER that I have found can do this!

Thank you mom for having highlights from La Traviata sung by V. It will always be my favorite, and I prefer her to all others. My brothers would hide this album but I always found it and it was Saturday morning ritual. I love the songs of the Auvergne and she sings this beautifully. I also love von Stade, L Popp, Upshaw and Sutherland. But mostly I love the kindness Victoria showed her audience. Thank you mom.

My all time favourite soprano by several miles. I played this out of curiosity to hear how similar I guess are the Catalan language and the Augverne patois. I have noted this with other sopranos. Oh yes, it is there! Now for the other beautiful songs of Cantaloube....canta hondo!

Indeed. The conductor brings out the finest parts of the orchestral accompaniment. Especially the piano.
