I know everyone says this sounds like a toxic relationship, but in my opinion, it's someone learning to find love after a relationship so toxic she believes she's not worth loving, nor does she trust anyone again (asking who the traitor is, and if he's strong enough to "protect your heart and mine") . Her past love took any pain in her heart for granted, made her feel like everything is her fault, and then left her to drown in her sorrows (hence the starting lyrics). She then finally finds someone who loves her, pain and all, and though she thinks herself still a burden, and has tried not to fall in love again, he actually makes her feel alright (hence the ending lyrics).

i like this song in my opinion it means that she has so much emotionally damaged that she feels like she weighs her lover down with her past and pain like its slowly sinking the both of them but he doesn't care only she worries....
I feel like this song truly resonates with Virginia Wolf's suicide, she drowned her self with rocks in her pockets (that's why she's heavy) because she was depressed and she left a note to her husband saying that she couldn't fight anymore and that she didn't wanted to ruin his life cause her love was like a curse, so I think Florence might have been inspired by her story

@@riveraspen2745 Of course in my eyes being completely ourselves is never a curse but Virginia at that time felt like a burden as often happens to people struggling with mental illnesses, sadly when you're depressed you feel like anyone who's around you would feel better without you around even if they tell you otherwise!

The last minute she practically uses her voice as its own instrument. It’s weaponizing the way she breaks down the song with her vocals. This song is my all time favorite of hers and always haunts me.

This song screams to me "toxic relationship" in various ways of narcissist versus empath, addiction maybe, she even throws in possible infidelity. The whole trust issue and which one of them is the actual victim is in question. As much as they drown in the toxicity of their morbid love, they still hang on to one another with the false sense they will save each other. Just my personal interpretation.

Every time I get to this point in this song, I'm reminded of the conflict between Astrid and Cicero...which is why I can imagine this song being sung from the perspective of the Listener, who adores Cicero but struggles to keep her "family" from tearing itself apart...

In times when I feel the darkness on my chest and my own demons in my head come to torment me. I listen and feel these words to my core as I look at my husband and sons. And then the days or weeks pass and I feel fine again and on top of the world and my theme tune is shake it out. The important thing is to remember feeling low is temporary and most the time it’s my body telling me to slow down and to practice self care.

I have very severe chronic depression since my childhood, that fails all antidepressants and therapy, no matter how hard I try and I feel like a burden to my husband. This song speaks to me, because I don't want the one that I love the most to get depressed too. He is stable and says he can handle it and that I'm so much more than my sickness, but anyways, I'm afraid that some day he doesn't want me anymore, even if I could understand his decision to protect himself. But for him, I won't give up to try and try again to get my depression better. I will fight for him the hell of life. With him, I felt the first time in my life true happiness.
It takes a long time, but I've made little steps of progress so far.
This song has meant different things to me at different places in my life. I have loved a toxic person and this song spoke to me. That relationship made me harden my heart and during that time I was a toxic person to love. This song spoke to me then as well. Now I still occasionally feel insecure about my love and ability to be loved. This song still speaks to me
