Vintage 1889 Water Pump [Restoration]

  • This old tool restoration is of a vintage 1889 water pump. It was manufactured in Brockville Ontario by the Smart company. The large air pressure chamber allowed it to pump water to the second level of a house, making these far superior to the regular pitcher pumps. This was a fun restoration for me as it is the first time I have rebuilt a hand pump, and it worked perfectly when it was complete. The spout on the pump was missing so I made one from assorted pipe fittings. I think it turned out great. Let me know what you think in the comments.

    Nice. I'm only 20 km from Brockville and i discovered an ancient stone well in great condition.....so ow my to-do list includes restoring and antique pump and building a new well cover to replace the rotten timbers .

    The restoration itself was wonderful; it turned out great; *well done.*
    As for the "almost music" not so much. Btw one part that most people enjoy that was not seen is the sandblasting.
    Showing a portion of that is always appreciated. *God bless.*

    1st old pump I’ve seen with that jar thing attached. What is the reason for it?

    • @vintagemachineworks
      @vintagemachineworks  3 года назад +4

      It is an air pressure chamber which allows water to be pumped uphill.

    Can you let me know where you got your replacement parts? I have a very similar pump I am working on. Thanks! In my pump there was also a thin wall non-ferrous tube. It was so corroded, I can’t tell how long it was or what it’s purpose was.

    I have seen these before but not in use. Dont think it is one you would use in the northern parts due to freezing.... Feed back encouraged.

    • @vintagemachineworks
      @vintagemachineworks  3 года назад +3

      Thanks for watching Slim. By opening the cap on the air chamber most of the water does drain from the pump, Not sure but I was told these pumps where mainly used indoors to pump water up to the second floor. The air in the chamber is compressed therefore creating enough pressure to allow the water to be pumped uphill.

    Beautiful restoration, great work. Can i ask you for some advice, i have a victorian water pump that has been working fine until recently. When primed, the prime water gets pumped out but no more water is drawn up. Both the foot valve and the weighted leather check valve are in good condition. Could the problem be with the valve in the piston? Any advice will be much appreciated.

    • @vintagemachineworks
      @vintagemachineworks  3 года назад +1

      Most times I find it is the leather piston cup is worn out or split or the inside wall of the pump has become too rough from rust and may need to be cleaned. I guess it could be possible that the piston valve is stuck open from debris.

      Thanks..I used a Sharpie brand paint pen on this one. They work good but need at least 2 coats for best results, but it drys fast.

  • @TheMankustrap

    Why didn't you use the original piston? did you break it? What is the balloon above the crane designed for, how does it work?

    • @vintagemachineworks
      @vintagemachineworks  2 года назад +1

      Yes the piston broke, they are made of cast and are quite brittle. The large "balloon" is an air chamber that allows it to build pressure, so it can pump water up hill. Thanks for watching

    • @TheMankustrap
      @TheMankustrap 2 года назад

      @@vintagemachineworks This cast metal is called cast iron, you always have to be very careful with it, do not spare time for soaking such elements, warm up with a burner, I'm sure everything could be disassembled more accurately. However, it's good that you brought the work to an end. Thanks for the answers.
