Vintage 1889 Water Pump [Restoration]

- This old tool restoration is of a vintage 1889 water pump. It was manufactured in Brockville Ontario by the Smart company. The large air pressure chamber allowed it to pump water to the second level of a house, making these far superior to the regular pitcher pumps. This was a fun restoration for me as it is the first time I have rebuilt a hand pump, and it worked perfectly when it was complete. The spout on the pump was missing so I made one from assorted pipe fittings. I think it turned out great. Let me know what you think in the comments.

I really like the fact that you made it function again, and not just yard art.
Thanks we try to make everything just as good as it was when new.
Nice. I'm only 20 km from Brockville and i discovered an ancient stone well in great condition.....so ow my to-do list includes restoring and antique pump and building a new well cover to replace the rotten timbers .
The restoration itself was wonderful; it turned out great; *well done.*
As for the "almost music" not so much. Btw one part that most people enjoy that was not seen is the sandblasting.
Showing a portion of that is always appreciated. *God bless.*
Great job!!! He himself restored a similar completely bronze very old one !!!

Thank you
Awesome step by step video, and a fantastic result, well done mate!
Thank you
1st old pump I’ve seen with that jar thing attached. What is the reason for it?
It is an air pressure chamber which allows water to be pumped uphill.
You really do great work.
Thank you
Well done. 👍
Thank you! 👍
Hello, I live in Australia, I am so impressed with your work, my imagination is going mad with thoughts of many places all over the world that would really appreciate the Water Pump and you....even here in our deserts. Thank you for sharing with us and Have a Happy Safe Christmas. I almost forgot...... I LOVE YOUR CHOOK....What is her name....?
I had to use an Aussie to English dictionary to figure out what a CHOOK is.LOL I don't know her name, she lives up the street but comes down regularly for a visit. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching, and have a Merry Christmas.
Can you let me know where you got your replacement parts? I have a very similar pump I am working on. Thanks! In my pump there was also a thin wall non-ferrous tube. It was so corroded, I can’t tell how long it was or what it’s purpose was.
Thanks for watching. Leather parts I bought at Leman's www.lehmans.com/product/replacement-cup-leathers-for-water-pumps/ or there is a company called "water source USA"
A+ BEST IVE SEEN ! THANKS >>>
Thank you
Could of keep the music out.. Nice job on the pump.
I have seen these before but not in use. Dont think it is one you would use in the northern parts due to freezing.... Feed back encouraged.
Thank You
Slim
Thanks for watching Slim. By opening the cap on the air chamber most of the water does drain from the pump, Not sure but I was told these pumps where mainly used indoors to pump water up to the second floor. The air in the chamber is compressed therefore creating enough pressure to allow the water to be pumped uphill.
To bad you lost the video of you making the spout.
Yeah some times it happens. But I hope the photos showed how it was made.
Neat’o … whats the purpose of the large oval piece? Is it a pressure tank? Plz educate me
Yes, that allows the pump, to pump water up hill.
Super, in Dutch it is a keukenpomp, pump for in the kitchen, not outdoors.
Thank you
Beautiful restoration, great work. Can i ask you for some advice, i have a victorian water pump that has been working fine until recently. When primed, the prime water gets pumped out but no more water is drawn up. Both the foot valve and the weighted leather check valve are in good condition. Could the problem be with the valve in the piston? Any advice will be much appreciated.
Most times I find it is the leather piston cup is worn out or split or the inside wall of the pump has become too rough from rust and may need to be cleaned. I guess it could be possible that the piston valve is stuck open from debris.
@@vintagemachineworks Thank you very much, I'll have a look at the piston valve so. :)
@@vintagemachineworks it turned out the water level in the well dropped below the foot valve after a few weeks of no rain. All the best, Carl
@@carlmorrow1 Happy you solved it.
👍✌🤞👌
Thanks for watching
Looks great! What specific pen/coating did you use for the golden lines/touches? I'm restoring an old water pump myself and would love to have the same look as this one. Thanks!
Thanks..I used a Sharpie brand paint pen on this one. They work good but need at least 2 coats for best results, but it drys fast.
Why didn't you use the original piston? did you break it? What is the balloon above the crane designed for, how does it work?
Yes the piston broke, they are made of cast and are quite brittle. The large "balloon" is an air chamber that allows it to build pressure, so it can pump water up hill. Thanks for watching
@@vintagemachineworks This cast metal is called cast iron, you always have to be very careful with it, do not spare time for soaking such elements, warm up with a burner, I'm sure everything could be disassembled more accurately. However, it's good that you brought the work to an end. Thanks for the answers.
Can you show how it works .. example how to set it up
What is it you need to know. All I did after the rebuild was attach a pipe and pump the handle.
I have one of these and want to use it in my backyard how could I use this I would need a water tank or I don't know what would you recommend how would you make this operational in your backyard
I have an old fe Myers & bro pump with no insides . Can anyone point me in a direction to get the parts I need?
Try Lehmans they may be able to help you. www.lehmans.com/search?w=pump+parts
36:20 бұл бөшке не үшін керек?
Бұл сорғыға қысым жасауға мүмкіндік береді, сондықтан ол суды төбеге дейін айдай алады.
@@vintagemachineworks РАХМЕТ! 👍
Kill the music! Please! I watch restoration videos for restoration. When I want music, I watch music videos.
I agree with you about the music. We generally only use music when we lose the original sound. Thanks for watching
zo die prutser is ook klaar met die pomp
Dankie dat jy gekyk het
