I'm actually one of those people who can easily put myself on "other's shoes" and sympathize and empathize with others, even towards "villains" (provided they are written well like Otto is, and not some shallow villain that just exist so the Protagonists have some "evil to defeat" and once the villain is dead it's a happy ending).
Though I can totally understand people who can't forgive him and continues to hate him, because indeed, he did a lot of terrible things (or could even become a Hero instead by not being the pathetic, selfish, foolish clown he is).
But all of that fades away when you see it from a perspective of each of them, including Otto himself, just playing a part in a "Grand Play", nothing but mere actors experiencing and living a temporary life in a human body (characters on a stage), while the Soul (the actors and actresses themselves) that inhabits it are immortal and eternal.
"All the world's a stage", as William Shakespeare would say.
Regression theme song puts this intelligently in its lyrics: "PERSONAS (the human body they temporarily inhabit) played out on the STAGE (the world) will return to the Self (the "Source" of it all, or whoever is the "opposite" of Will of the Honkai in Honkai Impact's universe), when there's a curtain call (the ending of the play)", that includes Otto as one of the "personas" along with others he loved and killed and suffered because of him.
And also the last few words of the narrator from Otto's Chronicles on RUclips: "...But to Otto himself, all rights and wrongs are TRANSIENT."
I also notice a lot of people seem to forget that without Otto, this story won't move forward at all, a lot of them seem to forget that his role as a Villain is to become the obstacle for the protagonists to overcome in order for them to become their greatest version that they are now at this part of the story--the main cast achieved such development that they are now more powerful than ever, enough that they are able to fight against Honkai while having a much better chance at defeating it for good.
And I fail to see how they will be able to improve and break through their limits without the intervention of an obstacle they must overcome, of which Otto Apocalypse so graciously took the role of (as one of the obstacles, along with the Honkai), whether he is aware of it or not, and whether he intended for it or not, his SELFISHNESS (of the resolve to sacrifice the world for one person) actually became a catalyst for the protagonists to becoming powerful enough to give this story a happy ending.
Taking a closer look at his Chronicles and this whole chapter in-game, he made sure that, throughout this chapter of the story, he placed obstacles and challenges for the protagonists to push through their limits, to sharpen their resolve and courage to fight to the end (even at the cost of their life) all while leaving a bunch of "Failsafe" (such as leaving the Abyss Flower from just outside the church, the timing of Durandal's rescue of Theresa by tampering with her Genius device, and so on)--for if they cannot overcome the challenges and obstacles he placed in their way, then Humanity truly won't stand a chance against the Honkai; but in the end, they are victorious.
At the end of the day: "Diamond cannot be polished without friction. Gold cannot be purified without fire."--Ramkrishna Paramahansa.
Otto Apocalypse became that "friction", that "fire", that "pressure", that made the protagonists shine, even more than what they would have achieved on their own (i.e., without a villain messing with them).
So no, I don't hate Otto--I just understand him, and I only just see him as "one of us" who is just a fellow actor (Soul), playing a temporary part (in a human body) in this Grand Stage; a necessary existence, from the perspective of an Immortal Soul outside of this temporary physical body. But that doesn't mean I won't accept his challenge and not fight him should it come to that, because after all, he is a villain to be overcome; I fight to overcome and stop him, but not because I "hate" him.
Fighting with hatred on the enemy is always a no-go; you are only perpetuating the cycle of Hatred if you do. Just like that part with Naruto vs Pain from the "Naruto" anime. Instead, fight with compassion towards them, with the intent of stopping them from committing more and more atrocities and innocents being harmed.
Though I cannot speak for those whom Otto messed with and suffered because of him, perhaps there's always a chance that, being free from the confines of their temporary physical body they will come to realize that it was all a play; nothing to hate, nothing to forgive, because no one did anything wrong, for they are all playing a role as co-actors and co-actresses, in the Honkai Impact 3rd's version of this "Grand Play" concocted by the Imaginary Tree, Sea of Quanta, Will of the Honkai, and whoever "God"/Source" is in there where all the Souls originate from.
At the end of the day though, Otto doesn't need other people to judge him--he himself would be the one to do that.
He's indeed a villain through and through and no one can change that, and no actions of his as "Otto Apocalypse" can change that, because that is his Soul's role (as an actor) that he chose (from all of his foolishness and selfishness), while living temporarily as "Otto Apocalypse" (as a character) in a temporary human body in that world (the "stage").
I did cry for Otto, though. It's kinda difficult not to when I usually just automatically put myself on other's shoes, be it the villain or the protagonist. I suppose my tears were a mixture of "remorse", crying for the things Otto did in the role of a "villain", and crying for those who suffered and died because of his actions, decisions and selfishness.

    • @JaporizedNg
      @JaporizedNg Год назад +2

Otto's whole character is made to be difficult to really have a good answer for. It's a sensible character that one can associate with, but is yet antagonistic and selfish.
I don't believe that he truly considers his actions as a good driving force for others; it is just a convenient excuse, created for those who do somewhat care of him to have an emotional escape hatch. For others who lived, that reason is somewhat riddled with survivor and hindsight bias.
Ofc, this is all "interesting" from a story-telling perspective. If you remove yourselves from all the characters, and remind yourselves that you're simply looking through a screen, this is all just a "Grand Play", and each character is but an actor on that stage. Maybe this is why I don't particularly enjoy drama for the sake of drama, but the moment I start looking at "stories" from that perspective, I'll lose all interest in them, because I think they've became far too removed (IMO) from our daily lives and exist purely for entertainment. I digress.
If we apply the same logic to people IRL, can we say that criminals can serve to propel humanity to be better prepared for their future, if they played their role in a way that would force humanity to adapt and "grow" to counter greater evil? Sure, there is no true equivalent of the Honkai IRL; humans have no "single enemy", and so we cannot really bring that logic IRL. But if that's the case, isn't the fact that there is such an evil in the story that this convenient excuse can be used for Otto? While the converse of a logical statement isn't always true, consider it a new assumption in the picture. In fact, Otto never really cared too much about the Honkai. If anything, it was just yet another tool for his goals, and he simply acted accordingly to take advantage of it.
My take on Otto being a pathetic clown is much simpler; this is a man who lives only to serve his own selfish desire. When a person's is reduced simply to their own selfish desires and nothing else, they become puppets of their own will, and, in a sense, utterly laughable, especially when its their own choice (yes yes, this implies that I believe in the notion of free will, and it's fine even if it's simply an illusion). Otto has no regard to values that make us human: dignity, grace (in terms of human relationships), love (not just romantic, and extends to both tangible and intangibles), and will gladly take advantage of or even sacrifice them for his goal. Otto knows that (that he's already reduced to such a puppet), and we know that Kallen made him know that, and the fact that he gladly continued to play his "role".
Now why should we cry for this pathetic clown? I did not cry for the Otto that we know. There's nothing to cry for this Pierro (sad clown). However, I cried for how things have progressed, and for all the unfortunate people who "got in" his way. We can cry for child Otto, and for how he evolved into the Pierro that we know of. I feel sorry for Kallen, who has to basically shoulder the weight that this dumb clown simply pushed onto her without her say. Imagine being Kallen, and knowing that a damn idiot murdered others, toyed with their emotions and humanity, and attempted to sacrifice the world for yourself. Thinking along that line, we have, yet again, a typical sad clown trope: doing something solely for the sake of someone else (importantly, it benefits no one else, and in Otto's case, again, I think it's simply a convenient side-effect of his goals), knowing that they won't be appreciative of it, and yet does it anyway. I'm sure many have stories that are similar to the last one, myself included. Laughable indeed, and we know it ourselves, but we also cannot save ourselves.
As per my usual online spiels, I did not really aim to properly counter or support what you wrote. It's simply written to dump some thoughts from reading your comment.

The man's dedication to Kallen was certainly something else, and quite moving in its own right. He moved heaven and earth for the sake of someone he loved, even knowing he wouldn't get to be with her himself. For all of that, he certainly has my respect.
But his path there involved more than a few atrocities, and ruined the lives of many other characters that I frankly care about more than I do him. And I will not forgive him for that.

Yes, he accomplished his goal… but how many lives did he throw away just to give a girl who died 500 years ago a new timeline to live in? People then say “but he valued the Valkyries…” did he, though? There are so many examples of how he viewed them as just as disposable as the rest of humanity.

Personally, I respect Otto as a villain. What people like me want to say is that, even if he is a villain, you cannot say that the man had also done something good for the world. His journey towards his end is honestly more of a dark hero route rather than just a mere villain. I did not forget the experiments, the massacres, the nuke, the people he manipulated to his bidding. I also did not forget how he stopped Kevin in his tracks, how he fooled a God, how he held back humanity's end for 500 years, and how he created the strongest heroes his universe can ever make.
Otto is a man of contradiction, and that is what makes him human. And that is why I respect him.

Otto basically saved the entire world making the cure to the black plague. He also created the valkyries, he created our theresa, he created our kiana, sacrificing himeko he made kiana able to control a herrscher, he trained bianka to be stronger than her mother. In the end otto was the real leader of current era, but some players only remember him by "oh, he nuked cecilia" (she was already dying because of abyss flower), "killed fuhua" (he knows very well that she can't die, it was part of his plan for her to be with kiana) and "himeko died 'cause of him" (nah she was already dying but choose to save kiana, also part of his plan so humanity would have control over herrscher powers).
