4:32 "The trick to dealing with propwash isn't necessarily dealing with your tune, its moreso how you fly it" I've been trying to tune out propwash for months, i tried different ESCs and a different FC, different batteries, different props, different component layout/weight distribution -- and really after months of trial and error, its a relief to hear this from somebody else. Its more simple than meets the eye, just don't fly into the column of turbulent air and that is 90% of the battle. Solid throttle management and timing is crucial. Great tip Stingy, keep up the awesome videos!
Wait! That’s Brooke Run park! Dude you’re the guy that showed me these drones years ago!!! You’re the one that got me into this hobby! Glad you’re doing well!
Im blown away! This is the very first time I actually see a "prop wash" with own eyes and also see the amazing way how to avoid it! BTW I have been searching for this for weeks. Thank you so much and, subscribed! ❤
few months ago i had this problem and thought it was my tune. then was told ill never fully get rid of that if i drop into the wash. thanks for showing us techniques on how to avoid it!!!
3 years?! Dude you need to make another one, it would do great, this video, was friggin great. This solidified things in my mind for prop wash, you saved me such a tuning nightmare with this video. It’s all in the sticks. It’s all in the sticks. Thank you based stingermanperson 🙏🏻
I like how John looks at 2:00 like he wants to say something, then starts listening to what you are saying and has no idea what you are talking about so he just walks off
I know you are not going to keep up the daily's for ever, but it is nice to have something new to watch each day, even if it is not the most interesting topic. I really like the daily Vlog's, going to be sorry to see them go next month. Great channel.
Thank you I have been trying to tune out that type of oscilation for months and thinking something else was wrong. This helped a bunch. I like these types of videos, you guys are my flying buddies that I don't have in real life so I like hearing the tribal knowlege stuff that you don't get anywhere but out at the flying field with your bro's
i heard a guy mention prop wash and i played it off pretty good but i honestly didn't kno WTF he was talking about. this one and the tuning video help alot.
I'd be interested in hearing some tips on mounting the session, unless maybe you've done that already and I missed it. What type of foam.... looks like you have a little foam block on top too to make it square?
So good to know that tremble I'm getting isn't all PID settings. Mine are still way worse so I still have a lot to do on the tuning but at least I know what to look for and how to avoid it. Thanks man and keep up the tutorials. Any chance there is an in depth look at antenna mods and repairs? I busted up a bunch of stuff trying the power loop tutorial.
Let's get some pictures! the quick edits are getting solid but a visual would really helpful to help understand the direction of thrust and the effect of decending directly into it. Kind of like how the four forces of flight are explained in the GA books. Just an idea but keep up the solid work! I've been thoroughly enjoying this series of videos from this month.
holy crap I've been thinking it was my tune all along, new FPV pilot here and I'm basically not keeping enough forward momentum while going down. Thanks!
Great video, I think a lot of people - myself included - see you guys flying without any propwash and think our tune isn't any good, but the truth is you're flying in such a way as to not encounter prop wash. Secrets of the masters REVEALED! Haha.
Dude! What a great explanation and demonstration of Prop Wash as well as how to avoid it...your Flight Instructor "chops" are showing! Reminds me of my flight instructor teaching me how to do a flutter stall in a Cessna 172...
Man Stingy! I have been looking for this answer for weeks. I have been tuning my quad for awhile this month and manage to have a smoother tune. I was trying to figure out if its the quad or me that gives the propwash. I think it is both since I was or have tried various hardware changes on my quad. Thanks a lot on this video tut, happy holidays!
Good stuff, it's actually a lot smoother when you do throttle management. Probably some throttle expo could also help to avoid adding too much throttle during these recoveries.
keep the good work i have learn a lot from you just need summer (really cold in Canada) so i can practice those techniques. and i have watch all you post this month
Coming from avionics perspective about prop wash. These events are highly trained for by all helicopter Cavalry units. When they land in formation. Most commonly known ones you all have seen is when a line of helicopters land together in a line. It’s called “carpet landing” term came from Vietnam war. They used to carpet bomb a Area so the cavalry crews can land and provide support. The need to land together is so important for safety that they had to over come prop wash that arises from formation landings. Here’s what they do in real life to combat prior wash. When the lead copter starts it’s decent the wing copter (closes one from lead) pays attention to the flow of air the that comes back from the terrain. They do this by yawing slightly left to right. The tail of the heli controls its yaw. For use it would have to be a conscious maneuver. When you “wag the tail” if you can imagine 1 upside down tornado coming from the main props. Then imagine Another small tornado coming from the tail which can change its orientation from left to right. Wagging your tail makes sure any high pressure area underneath you becomes low pressure. Imagine jumping in a pool that was generating bubbles that rest on the top layer When your mass hits the density of the bubbling water it has an effect of “sucking you down” because of the nature of thermodynamics. High pressure always flows towards low pressure. The same is true for quads. When a prop wash event is triggered it’s like us jumping in on that bubbly water. Since we are high pressure. When we encounter high pressure we follow the flow. Which means a sudden acceleration towards any given direction where low pressure is the most. So in practice just make sure there’s no bubbles underneath you, they also occur In hallways and door ways. The way i look at it is if there’s any thing that can potential turn low pressure into high pressure is a “near danger zone” military term that dictates the nature of your approximations. In a high danger zone your maneuvers are swift and coordinated. Near, low, high, and tactical danger zones are the categories they follow. All because of prop wash
The phenomenon you are talking about is actually called Vortex Ring State or Settling With Power but yes it is basically caused because of prop wash but if you want to look into it a bit deeper just type that into the Googler. Regardless you did a great job getting the information out there.
wow man that's a great video! I've been having issues with prop wash on a new Quad and I think it's because I was flying it more gentle and probably Landing flat into my prop wash. you are so good you can't even break your habits to demonstrate bad flying skills, i bet you steele could demonstrate propwash. he's 'gettin good' lol. and if steele read that last part that was facetiousness
Hey, great info about the prop wash. Something different where the flying style is being discussed rather than the tune. Btw, just wondering about your GoPro cam angle. I notice it is slightly lower than your FPV cam angle of 45˚. I know I'm most probably over thinking but did you lower the angle on purpose? Or it's just that way and you didn't notice or bother? Thanks and cheers!
The little I.R.L. mini fixed wings were all over you today... 6:54 :-) Great tip, sometimes the obvious things don't click for me, until I hear or see someone else doing them.
great video thank you very much I've got one question why do you wear your patch antenna on the left side of your diversity opposed to the right side and vice versa for the day Mad Mushroom does it make a difference
I only recently figured this out. quality content that I think lots of intermediate pilots like myself really appreciate. Been watching your Vlogs flat out and really enjoy the no bullshit approach. lots of others I feel are just all to similar. keep up the great work! #nobullshit
Justin Bailey I like stingers flying more. Steele is cool, he makes good content, but when he makes videos explaining stuff I feel like he is giving advice because he is obligated to, as with stinger is because he wants to lol. Steele probably wants to, but I feel like he likes to show off his skills more than give advice. there like opposites
How do i fix yaw occillations? Do I add more D term on Yaw? Other than that, my quad is flying pretty good. I use GCS for cc3d and I really like the TxPID feature which allows me to tune while in the air using my pot sliders.
Unfortunately most prop wash cannot be avoided in extremely tight 180° turns, such as on the MultiGP type of gate racing, but thanks for the video Stingy.
Is prop wash actually dangerous on a race quad? I'm a total newbie at flying quads, and yesterday, I went for my first... real flight if I can say, and I experienced prop wash. I didn't even know what it was until I found out about prop wash this morning. I've seen a video of a Dji crashing because of prop wash. I understand our drones aren't flying cows, but is prop wash still dangerous for us or it just ruins the footage? :P thanks!
Wow!! I was about to comment that this really looks like Brooke Run park, then I saw the comments! I’m just getting into this hobby and looking for friends to fly with, and I live 2 miles from this park!!! Is flying still allowed there? It would be great to have some help... and flying buddies!
My quad oscillates already when you slowly descent vertically. Once its wiggling you reay have to apply power to get it out.. Wil putting a lower P gain help? And switching bullnose 2 blade to normal 3 blade?
On the other side, my other two BTF drones (with factory settings) do not get prop wash at all no matter how late I throttle up. That is remarkable and so relaxed to fly. And of course, I want it for the "prop wash" drone as well. Spoiled.
Im new and I have a problem even in a slow decent my quad starts to wobble like almost falls out of the air bad the only way I can land is to get low down going forward at a good speed and disarm what do I need to do to fix that? or do I have to land by slamming into the ground
Josh not exactly. DJI makes a goggle/video system but you still have to build it and it doesn’t ever fly like a mavic. It’s an entirely different type of flying and system.
motion sickness is not great for this sport. if you have it- flying more can help- but it's just that you were dealt a bad hand. Lots of gimmicks for this but i'm not sure how well they work. Its just a crappy thing you have to try and overlook. Mind over matter... but that doesn't work most of the time... I know by me saying this haters might arrive...
Dang that boy so good he can't do it wrong lol
if he pulled this on a tiny whoop, it would have been much more dramatic

Story of my life too!, so good to hear this from the top pilots, now I can put my mind to rest and practice properly! :)
Wait! That’s Brooke Run park! Dude you’re the guy that showed me these drones years ago!!! You’re the one that got me into this hobby! Glad you’re doing well!
Good tip! Nice job man.
Do you also fly fpv man?
Im blown away! This is the very first time I actually see a "prop wash" with own eyes and also see the amazing way how to avoid it! BTW I have been searching for this for weeks. Thank you so much and, subscribed! ❤
After nearly 3yrs, I still enjoy this tips..very useful tips. Thanks A million!

I've been having terrible propwash, but this tutorial has really made me realise where i'm going wrong, and what to do about it, thanks Stingy.
Your banging out a hefty amount of good content Pal! Thank you for your time.
i heard a guy mention prop wash and i played it off pretty good but i honestly didn't kno WTF he was talking about. this one and the tuning video help alot.

Dude! What a great explanation and demonstration of Prop Wash as well as how to avoid it...your Flight Instructor "chops" are showing! Reminds me of my flight instructor teaching me how to do a flutter stall in a Cessna 172...
Kevin, incredibly helpful. I like your breakdown of the problem, the cause, and the solution; technical and yet understandable. A+
Ill be in georgia in 2 weeks and the fact your in a tshirt is a good sign.
still watching this 3 years later.. :)
Still relevant.

Another great vid man. Enjoying your marathon of content.
Im not ineterested about drones and stuff like this but i really like and enjoy your vids😊 greetings from Texas🤜👍
Thanks a bunch for sharing. You are an excellent instructor!
Dude! Your such a great instructor! Loved it! Thanks!

Thanks for the really helpful video! Is this prop wash oscillation what people are referring to when they talk about "vortex ring state"?
The phenomenon you are talking about is actually called Vortex Ring State or Settling With Power but yes it is basically caused because of prop wash but if you want to look into it a bit deeper just type that into the Googler.
Regardless you did a great job getting the information out there.
Just started trying power loops so this is super helpful 👍 Mine are super sized at the moment. Any tips on getting them tighter?
wow man that's a great video! Awesome technical explanations Stingy! And yet so much cooler than Bardwell...
Agree. But Bardwell is much more informative in a different way. For example, I like the stick overlay in his videos.
days you telling em all the tricks =) great video buddy
The little I.R.L. mini fixed wings were all over you today... 6:54 :-) Great tip, sometimes the obvious things don't click for me, until I hear or see someone else doing them.
Good ol' Brook Run. I love that place! Who was ripping while you were filming? They were tearing it up! Lmao.
finally a proper explanation regarding propwash, TQ :)
throttle screaming, halling back from the woods is just tooo great, n1!! :)
great video thank you very much I've got one question why do you wear your patch antenna on the left side of your diversity opposed to the right side and vice versa for the day Mad Mushroom does it make a difference
very useful info for me mate!! i will try it, thanks mate and have a nice holiday!!
Great demo and explanation Kevin
Best tip video I have seen. You are doing great on your videos. I have seen improvement for sure. Just giving some feedback.
I only recently figured this out. quality content that I think lots of intermediate pilots like myself really appreciate.

lots of others I feel are just all to similar. keep up the great work!

I thought this was about actually wash the proppellers...But hey.. i learn somthing every single day :)
Thanks stinger. Since i don't have people to fly with this is very helpful.
6:30 sick drone acrobatics in the background
Thanks. Helps to understand a tune vs technique issue.
Great video as always! Thanks for doing these videos! Keep them coming!
Great tip, I always thought getting those oscillations meant my tune wasn't right!
I love you channel. Found it through steele but your are better and nicer lol. cheers!
seth davenport I agree, I feel like steel can come across as a little rude sometimes but they're both still awesome dudes!

Awesome tutorial. Can't wait to try it.
You doing a really great job! well done!
Fantastic stuff here. My favorite one yet! Thanks Stingy
Thanks man! I thought it was my pids.. learned a lot! 🙌🏻 now bring it in practice 👊🏻
Good video to watch while I'm Waiting to watch the drone light show at Disney springs in Orlando
can you do a video on your charging scheme and battery care?
new to drones and whats the negative side of a prop wash? Thanks for any helpful info.
great topic, and holy wow under 7 minutes!
Excellent Explanation Man!!!
*PROP WASH 101* Gets it Done!!!:)
Great vid. Really useful, you should do more of that quick tips :)
How do i fix yaw occillations? Do I add more D term on Yaw? Other than that, my quad is flying pretty good. I use GCS for cc3d and I really like the TxPID feature which allows me to tune while in the air using my pot sliders.

Thank you, I was wondering if my tune was off, but now I know that it was probably just propwash.

i remember watching this back in my zmr 250 days ,,o how i miss those days
Really thoughtful tips 👍🏼
How about when you are racing and doing hard 180s?
BEST TIP EVER.
Stingy, I'd like to get your thoughts on the Team Racekraft 5051 tri-blades.
Great explanation! Thanks Kev
Awesome, thank you StingerSwarm!
Again a very interesting video of you,
I liked again good Greeting Bav!!
Thanks mate for this good tutorial ! Keep going :D
That ain't Gwinnett that you're in at the beginning of the video is it?
Could you make or have you made a video on building tips? Thxs
Is this kind of flying/visuals possible with any DJI product?
I want to get this kind of FPV flying experience, but I also want GPS option...
Josh not exactly. DJI makes a goggle/video system but you still have to build it and it doesn’t ever fly like a mavic. It’s an entirely different type of flying and system.
That is the same tree that I did my first ever successful powerloop. :)
How often do you have to replace motors?
can yall film your hands on the controller ?
Good video! This is also known as Vortex Ring State or Settling with Power.
do you have any problems with Motion sickness?
what are your tips on avoiding it?
motion sickness is not great for this sport. if you have it- flying more can help- but it's just that you were dealt a bad hand. Lots of gimmicks for this but i'm not sure how well they work. Its just a crappy thing you have to try and overlook. Mind over matter... but that doesn't work most of the time... I know by me saying this haters might arrive...
Is the technical phrase a "vortex ring state"?
Nice video!! would like to see more from you pls 😁
You have 2 receiver on your fatshark ?
Awesome explanation
