- An epic episode of Live From My Drum Room celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert on October 14, 1989 in Los Angeles, widely considered the greatest drumming event in history. My guests are the drummers and people who made it possible: Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, Gregg Bissonette & Dennis Chambers, along with Cathy Rich who produced the show and Rob Wallis of Hudson Music (formerly DCI video) who captured it on film for all of posterity. It was the first time all of us had been together at the same time since that incredible night 35 years ago. The show aired live exactly 35 years to the day - October 14, 2024, in front of a LIVE audience of 40,000 viewers! We shared stories and memories of the event and the late Louie Bellson. (The podcast includes bonus content with Steve Gadd remembering Louie, which was not included in the livestream!) So come along for the ride and please subscribe!

Thank you everyone, for watching, and sharing your memories of this epic show.
The idea of doing a 35th reunion came to me a few months ago but I honestly didn’t imagine or think I’d be able to get all the guys and Cathy together at the same time. But doing this show, and all of us being together again was capturing lightning in a bottle for a second time. Thanks for watching and please subscribe! 🙏❤️
The Gadd/Vinnie/Weckl solo is for sure the greatest and most monumental drum solo of all time
I’d like to know which drummer was keeping what rhythm while one drummer was soloing.
After watching that Weckl/Gadd/Vinnie solo so many times over the years, it’s fascinating to see them all watch it together themselves. One of the most iconic moments in drumming history for sure. Thanks for letting us join this epic reunion hang!
Enjoyed this show very much John. Great work getting it together.
@@SpikeTSmith Thanks Spike. Hope all is well. Cheers my friend! 🙏❤️
Gregg Bissonnette is world class drummer and the absolute nicest guy in the business !!
What an amazing night. I was 19 years old. no one else wanted to go. I was like FORGET IT... I'm goin!! So grateful that I did. Dennis was the toast of intermission, but seeing Gadd, Vinnie and Weckl trading solos over that Mozambique pattern was one I still hold onto til this day. Seeing Ralph Humphery a few rows in front of me w/ his wife and a TON of drummers all during intermission was drummer's heaven also. So glad y'all are celebrating the 35th anniversary. Thank you Johnny - D for putting this together!
What a fantastic commemoration by my favorite drummers paying tribute to one of the greatest of all time, Buddy Rich.
That 1989 show is HISTORY
Absolument JB !!! Extraordinaire !
I get tears from time to time watching Buddy’s Memorial Scholarship Concert. It made a big impact in my life and I will be forever grateful to all of you! Thank you all for your music, your passion, your talent!! God bless you all!! ❤
ty man my heroes one frame
I'm sitting here just thinking through the massive discography of these gentleman and the great music they have created. Buddy was the greatest natural drummer in the history of the world and his playing still inspires to this day.
I was fortunate to have done a drum battle with Louie at a clinic here in Connecticut,,,,He said afterwards ''Good hands'' and I thought OK now I can die.40 years ago, now I'm 73...great experience.RIP Lou.
1989, Oct. 14th, that show changed the face of the modern drumming no joke, timeless influence and inspiration, thanks to the 6 of you, and the whole organization, Cathy, Rob and all people involved.
"I was just happy that we all started and ended together...." 😅
Dr Steve Gadd.
Some very important words from the GREAT Dave Weckl (here looking like the GREAT D. Fagen), he said something like : "Some drummers, when they play on a playback, they sound as if they are supported by this playback, when it should be contrary, because when we play with real musicians, they should be able to show the way. . "
Johnny D., THANKS FOR SO MUCH for that Episode 207, that one if for the eternity. 🙌🏽
Any kid squabbling about who's the best, the goat etc, should watch this. There is nothing but respect at the highest level of drumming, amongst my heroes anyway. Its beautiful 🙏
@@doubts Agreed! 👍
Serious 4 on the floor on Sister Sadie. Dennis the menace!!!!😮 Feels great with the 4 to floor
Thank you John for posting this reunion. What great people and spirit.
WOW... Thank you ♥
I still have the old VHS tape of this concert! Great show guys and great memories! Thanks!
Epic ❤🙏🎯
Thanks to each of you very much for doing this.
Thank you for making this happen and give us the opportunity to get some insight to this unforgettable night 🙏🙏🙏
What a special reunion, thanks for bringing this together, John.
Woweee!!! Yes, I also had the original VCR video tape. All of these artists were (are) brilliant in their own way. Louie with fantastic swing chops, and dazzling, clean, crisp technique. And he also more than held his own with Greg and Dennis playing that funk groove, which was not really his forte (yet he was still tremendous). Dennis is the ultimate, natural "street drummer" who has remarkable power and glistening speed facility around the kit and such a phenomenal foot. Fantastic! Greg had that buoyancy and bounce and humor to his anazing playing...so versatile too. Steve's feel and approach and pocket and tone just shined through with swing and funk. Vinnie was a rhythmic wizard. The way in which he would play around the kit over the bar lines and then come back in on time is really quite astounding. I thought that his Rottweiler analogy was hilarious! Cathy just showed how real and warm she is with class and heart. Funny implication that her Mom was intrigued about a drummer (Vinnie) "practicing," because Mrs. Rich really never saw a drummer practicing at home! So funny! Rob's input here was superb, painting the picture of the back stories, and obstacles of it all. Whewww!!! John deserves so much credit in the excellent way in which he moved everything along here so deftly. He did a supreme job hosting. Bravo, John and his guests.
Thank you 🙏♥
Vinnie is in flying form. Never seen him so comfortable and so giddy 😊
With DEAR LONGTIME friends, that's the way he is.
@@RogerBiwandu it's fantastic 😊😊
Drummers always have a kindred brotherhood among each other sharing ideas and fun. I love this exchange
I loved that so much! Thanks very much, John. It’s a real privilege being able to witness these legends hang out and reminisce. You always get a great vibe going in your Drum Room!
For us younger drummers coming up at the time, this was a pivotal moment. Vinnie, Dave, Dennis, Steve and Greg all together on one VHS tape we could play time after time.
Holy cow what a group you put together John. Kudos!
Thanks!🙏
Only 203 likes for this great moment ? This is What Life is about… Fantastic.
I think it's so hilarious that it's all calm and reflective until Vinnie shows up and all hell breaks loose!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣
Wasnt Neil Peart involved or am i thinking about Burnin For Buddy project?
Absolutely fantastic !!!!!!!!!
I'm so happy and grateful that you were able to organize this 35-year reunion of superstar drummers! 🙏🥁 So many amazing stories here! October 14, 1989 was a very special day, and one of my many cherished memories with my dad is sharing this event with him that night at The Wiltern. I was a college student at the time, playing gigs on the side. All of these drummers assembled here were (and still are) my role models and examples to follow. My dad was a part-time jazz drummer who inspired me to play the drums when I was young. He grew up admiring Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Louie Bellson, Lionel Hampton, and Joe Morello, among others. He loved big band music. We were thrilled to be in that theater, at the center of the drumming universe, for a few hours! We knew then that this was a once-in-a-lifetime moment. This reunion is very special, too! I look up to all of you! 🙏
@@fortedrummer3026 Great story! 👍
There is so much one could say about this, it's scary. But if you had to choose one word to sum it up, I would say that is LOVE. So much love. Thank you very much for channeling that, John.
The Buddy Rich Memorial Concert... If feels like is way just yesterday.
What a great thing to watch. So great to see you all together. Has anyone ever discussed putting the show on again with all these guys? How good would that be!
LOVE ❤ LOVE ❤️LOVE ❤
Every podcast is entertaining but this has been one of my favorites. Watching and hearing those guys react to each others playing is refreshing to see. No ego just enjoying watching each other play. Well done John

Thats great!! Thanks for memorys!
Thanks, John, for a remembering and the celebration of the beginnings of the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert. The impact of Buddy Rich and his legacy is everlasting. His influences on drummers and musicians some 35 years later attest to the quality of his work.
Thanks to Cathy Rich, for her acknowledgement of her father and all the drummers who were impacted by "the greatest drummer of the world".❤
As ever absolutely brilliant. It was great to watch the guys watching their performance’s and hearing the back stories. Have to say Dr Gadd has always been a favourite. The Mozambique just worked so well.
Bought the video when it came out all those years ago; played it to death. Amazing to hear these guys "hanging" and reminiscing. Thanks +++
I like so many others had that tape and wore it out...thanks so much for reliving this with all those wonderful people...
Such a beautiful thing to see these legendary drummers and musicians. These guys inspired me to play on drums. They are top of the top. Also thank you for making this video John, such a beautiful memory to the concert and the greatest drummer in history Buddy Rich. Thank you
Luv hearing these great drummers talking old times ❤❤
Steve gadd is the best !!❤❤
Thanks for this. Great memories for me,
This was AMAZING! All of my favorite drummers in one place!
I got to meet Louis Bellson one time at the Zildjian factory in the early 90s, when I had a brief endorsement. He was the sweetest man and So into what was going on in the music scene of the day. I remember talking to him about this concert that I actually saw on video at the time, and he just loved the experience. Its such a wonderful memory.
Very Nice Show .. it was one of a kind …
The influence those videos had literally exploded the drum world. great to see all these legends again
Thanks so much John, and everyone involved here! Just gotta say, whatever y’all ate on the flight into LA, I’m a need some a dat!!!😂😂😂
This was Fantastic! I enjoyed hearing each drummers perspective on how these shows were put together. Great stories and laughs. I was smiling the whole time. Thank you Rob and Kathy for creating a timeless production - and to John for keeping the memory alive and building community.

Just awesome 🙌 thank you very much 🙏
Best thing I've seen on RUclips in a long time.Thanx,John.
Joy to the drum world homecoming day.
So good my brother. I think my favorite part (if possible) was watching the guys reactions to each other performances that you played from the show. I know what I've thought for years but so cool, even emotional, to see their reactions :)
These men, including Cathy, are extremely blessed, God has them still here for a reason & a season.....
I was at this concert in the fourth row, man, I was blown away then, and I'm blown away now. BTW, on the way out I picked up a one of a kind poster of this event. I don't know how many of them are out there, IF ANY, but would love to get it signed🥁!
brilliant.... thank u.
Awesome !!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🎵
Great! The Gadd interview at the end sounded crazy.
Thanks for the heads up. I'm working on fixing it. 👍
This was an awesome event in itself
Great job,John.Fantastic.
Love it 💗🙌🏻🤩
I have all those shows.....some great, others were better than great....My friend Lou..miss Buddy,Miss Louie.
Dave definitely played Mercy Mercy Mercy at westbury. I had a Walkman with me and I recorded it. Not sure about the other one.
Dom familaro opened the show doing fantasy from Earth wind & fire, and it was blistering!!!
Probably the only time I've seen him play with a band.
Legendary 🥁🤗🥁
I love the teibute to jot only Buddy, but Louie as well ❤
This was next level John! Nicely smashed!😀👍
Together with Title: My favourite RUclips Thumbnail this year! 😄
This was a great reunion!! Thanks for doing this!! Looks like we're gonna need another reunion episode of the BRMS New York show in 1991 with Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Steve Smith, Omar Hakim and Will Calhoun....😊😊😊❤️❤️❤️
How ‘bout some props for all the work Steve Arnold did for all these shows? Great shows! I was at all the NY shows - Westbury, and the two at the Ritz.
Absolutely! We all give Steve credit and huge props for making those shows so great! 👍
I was at the Westbury show as well. Fantastic!
THE BUS TAPES!!!!
Louie had the classic big band sound, everyone else had the modern rock sound.
Fam and I studied with Jim Chapin around the same era...Miss that guy.
I was at that Wiltern Theater show and Freddie Gruber was there!!
Awesome!
Oh man Vinnie was probably on tour or in the studio!
This is GREAT!!
Thanks Shane! Sorry I missed last night. I'm sure it was great!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
like many others -I wore the vhs tapes out of these gigs
LOTS of rewinds on the old VHS tape for this gig!
Fantastic! Please put the cc subtitles on! Thanks a lot! ❤
At 48:44, Vinnie became immortal !!! 💯
PS : and I'm sure that Zildjian China Boy cymbal did suit him !!! 🤣
Vinnie basically foreshadowing what would become "gospel chops".
The best drummers in the world 👏👏👏👏👍👍👍🥁🥁🤟🤟
Beautiful Lady looks great , only one buddy rich The Man
The heroes of my youth.
