  • Naum Shtarkman's magical reading of the Schubert-Liszt Ständchen (Serenade), live in Moscow in 1991. This was one of two encores following his Chopin PC 2.

This is just simply out of this world wonderful. I cannot believe I have missed this great, great pianist. The technique is flawless, so disciplined yet natural and the musicianship is completely direct, intense and very moving. The sound projection and quality of tone is superb even here on a simple recording- it must have been pure magic in the hall. The weaving of the melody with its, canonic counter is simply breathtakingly beautiful.

Agreed, this music is simple, directly from the heart. 3:50 is the greatest section of this piece anyway, but he plays it so beautifully it becomes still more sublime.

0:08 what a singing, what a tempo, what a tension ................ I don't know what M. Shtarkman has been going through during his life .... but I wouldn't wish it to anyone

Chapeau! He won 3d in the 1958 Famed Tchaikovsky competition where van cliburn took first. Marvelous pianist in perhaps my favorite piece of all time.

Not heard of this pianist. Clearly a Master and illustrating beautifully why Liszt considered Schubert to be the most lyrical of all composers.

Восхитительный пример , когда есть что сказать и есть что узнать ..бездна мудрости ,содержания , внутреннего благородства и силы.

It is sad, and will there be the song that there is sorrow as this song elsewhere❓
I feel sad when I think of the feeling regret of the great composer who died from 31years old. This song strongly shakes the human soul.

Yes - beautifully paced and structured. Absolutely no emotional incontinence and meaningless rubato so prevalent elsewhere.

Does anyone have a link to buy or download this arrangement? I always find it with 2 pianists required, but would like to spend (probably the next year) trying to master this version! Thank you!

You’ve probably found a copy by now, but if not then the IMSLP petrucci library has it (& the simpler Horn version)
