Today's video is about a day in the life of a video editor, television editing, and working in the TV industry in Los Angeles. So, what does a television editor do? It's my responsibility to piece together scenes that aren't in the proper order for the plot. To make the most of the script, editors consult with the director frequently throughout pre-production.
A typical day in the life for TV, film and video editors includes:
- Determining the precise audio, visual, and musical effects and music required to finish films.
- Compiling raw footage into a continuous whole and organizing it in accordance with director and producer instructions or scripts.
- Examining edited or assembled videotapes on screens or monitors to see whether any adjustments need to be made.
- Setting up and using digital video effects devices, electronic titling systems, video switching equipment, and computer editing systems to create a finished product.
- Cutting film clips to certain lengths and reassembling portions into sequences that tell stories as effectively as possible.
What other tasks do video editors perform on a daily basis? Creating treatments and storyboards, writing scripts, producing and editing videos and photos for various platforms, from short-form daily content for social media platforms to long-form series, and locating and/or creating and adding graphics, animations, special effects, etc. are all possible tasks that may be included in a typical day.

As a TV and video editor, we need to be creative, detail-oriented, and have a keen eye for what makes a good story. We also need to know how to use the right software tools to edit videos. A TV or video editor's job is not as simple as it seems. We are sometimes expected to work long hours and the job can be stressful at times. There are many deadlines that they need to meet which can be challenging when there are many other projects in the pipeline. But these challenges make it all worth it when they see the final product on television or online.

Thanks for sharing your day. Just spent an hour watching videos on your channel. Keep it up, Jo.
Glad you like them! Thanks so much for your support. I love making videos and I want to keep going, it’s comments like these that make my day
Jo, I enjoyed a day in the life. Keep making videos.
Thanks so much dude. I think about quitting all the time, but comments like this make me want to keep going.
Loved this!
Thanks so much for speaking up and telling me. Means a lot!
great video as always!
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. These comments keep me motivated.
I love the automated apps. It's not that I necessarily don't want to talk to people. I actually enjoy talking to people, but having severe social anxiety often makes simple tasks like ordering coffee very difficult...that's probably why I became an editor and not a super sexy movie star. Literally the only reason...stupid anxiety.
I 100 PERECENT UNDERSTAND - I think I have social anxiety too, but I'm doing my best to really overcome it by forcing myself to be on camera, and being on camera in public totally stresses me out, but I force myself to do it!
I felt like I was watching an episode of an actual tv show the production quality is so good.
Hey! Thanks buddy, totally appreciate that. Check out my latest video, it’s a podcast about how I got into tv
Hi Jo. I love your videos, this one was really interesting. Different world from me who works in a factory in Germany. 😅👍 Keep it up…. It’s not so important the quantity of views… but you inspired me. Thank you for that.
Thanks so much!!! I appreciate you making a comment. Happy Holidays 👌
I want to watch everyone of your videos! So good!
Thanks for watching me!!!! My wife and I want to make it to Banff, its on our bucket list!
Really great vid! The vlog style seems so smooth and natural to you. Omggg I’d love to be a voice actor/voice over artist. Do you have any videos on how you started?
No I don't but I guess I could do a. video! Thanks so much for watching my stuff Cammy, I'll do the same - appreciate your support!!!
@@jostalking I think you definitely should! Sooooo many people are looking to get into that. You could do a series on it.
@@CammyjOfficial Yeah I just asked a question about this too!
I loved this, Jo! It’s really cool seeing how the pros do it. Thanks for the insight. So… this was all shot on your phone? It looked great!
It’s about 75% iPhone and 25% a7iV. Thanks so much for watching Chris! I wanted to try out the Dji Osmo Mobile 6. I had it track me in a lot of shots. It’s pretty great.
As someone who teaches middle school students how to edit on Adobe Rush - what platform do you edit with? Avid - Premiere Pro - Final Cut - (something unknown) - Happy December!
What an admirable thing to teach. Very cool. I bet they love your class. I edit in Premiere Pro, it’s my favorite software. Most of my friends who edit in long form edit in avid
@@jostalking Your job maybe cooler - it sounds so "Hollywood" - thx for great content!
I am enjoying your RUclips channel man. Questions for you about your voiceover work - how much editing and mastering do you to the audio after you record? Are there certain presets or effects that you like to use on (what I'm assuming is) Adobe Audition?
That’s so nice to hear. I use adobe audition and then noise reduction, then multi band compressor broadcast ( I’ll double check the exact name and get back to you.)
You should do this type of video more often. So that will be more like daily vlogs. I know the hard part is editing. But being a pro you can do it easily.
you really think so? I would love to, but it didn't get many views so I didn't know if I should do more - still finding my way around RUclips - I'm trying to figure out where I belong. I am currently working on a video on how I pick out my music, maybe that will be interesting???? Im just going to keep going I guess...
@@jostalking I believe in you. The contents you keep posting are infectious. So in the initial stage, you may not be getting the views but once you become more popular I believe your videos will pick up the views once YT pushes them more to the audience. You just have to post regularly. Like 3-4 videos each week. I know you have a busy schedule but you can do it. Yes, you can take the ideas from the comments and put that in a video by showing everyday life. More like Casey but you already have your own style.
@@jostalking OMG the music is the hardest part -I struggle with finding what I think is the right music and it takes forever. I would love to see how you do it! any suggestions that you have would be much appreciated. Your work is awesome.
Tell me about that editing keyboard. What was that?
My editing keyboard is actually just an apple keyboard with a Premiere Pro, I love it! www.editorskeys.com Thanks so much for watching my channel and being a loyal fan!!
do all the tv editors also have to do voice overs?
Actually no, it's just something that I discovered I could do. I edit promos and trailers and a lot of times the editor does a scratch track until the voice over guy can come in. However eventually I started doing voice over because I got good at it and the clients started to request me to do it. Appreciate you watching! Thanks for the comment
Great video. New subscriber. Wish you could show more about your work but obviously you can’t for reasons stated in the video.
I was thinking about doing a 2nd one, do you think people would watch? Truly appreciate you subscribing. Thanks! 🙏🏽
@@jostalking I love watching “day in the life” content from random people who actually have full time jobs that aren’t just vlogging and content creation.
One of the pilots I follow has a full time job as a sound engineering for television golf. Not sure how to properly say that basically he does the audio for golf tournaments on tv. Just an interesting job you’d never think about until you saw someone talk about it.
Same with what you do, how you edit different tv shows and stuff. It’s interesting.
@@BaxterretxaB geez that guy’s two jobs have nothing to do with each other. That’s amazing.
@@jostalking well technically flying isn’t his job. He just owns his own small plane to travel for work but he films it sometimes and then makes flying videos about it. I think it helps solidify the plane as a business expense since he is using it to generate RUclips content as well as travel for work.
Do you use Premiere pro for most of your projects?
Yes all of them! Thanks for watching!!!
What do you edit on?
@@jostalking I mostly use Premiere pro..and when my system isn't glitching!, I end up with Filmora
@@Marv_studiosshavent tried Filmora - just love that I can integrate Photoshop, Audition, and After Effects all in one place
@@jostalking Spoken a pro editor 😉
Very interesting video!! Thank you for making😊 I was wondering if you can help me with some advice. I am currently editing on my iPad, but I want to get serious about video editing.
🎥 If I want to freelance as a video editor for companies for example, or TV, which software should I use? ▶️ Premiere used to be the most popular, but all the creators I follow are migrating to DaVinci or Final Cut. Why? All video editing softwares are quite expensive and they require a massive time investment to master, so I want to make the right decision. What is your professional opinion?
Thanks so much for watching again Cristina!! FYI I don’t know if any professional TV or Film editors working on anything other than AVID or Premiere Pro. Those two are the industry standard. Hope that helps. I personally love Premiere and will not take a job unless it is done in Premiere
@@jostalking Thank you for your reply, it is very helpful, yes🙏🏻😊 I understand now that premiere is the industry standard. I am taking MattD’Avella’s RUclips course btw, it’s ok-ish. In case you were interested, definitely overpriced for the information in it (500🥲), it’s not bad , but it’s not packed with info either. I wouldn’t say it is amazing. However I have noticed that it is very pleasant to do, it is organised in a way that makes it simple &easy . I am a master procrastinator, however I have not found myself procrastinating doing it at all. A very enjoyable course. 🤔Maybe because I study video marketing ( which is the same topic on steroids, but for that I pay 8K a year, ouch!) Casey’s course was more action taking, this one is more chill. I would definitely take another of Casey’s courses if he makes another one.
@@CristinaFilms thanks for telling me about Matt’s class I love his style, but I don’t feel like it really resembles mine. I think so connect more with Casey’s style. Maybe you should do a review on Matt’s class? Im sure lots of people would find it helpful.
@@jostalking Thank you!
Is it necessary to shave?
Lol, for me not really - I'm asian - thanks for watching!
Much easier for me to post a video note:

Simon!!! Thanks so much for taking the time to make this!!! You made my day!! I woke up to this comment and I will be smiling all day!! I hope you enjoy some of the other videos. Happy Holidays to you and your wife! Thanks again!
