  • Today we look at the merger between FCA and Groupe PSA, otherwise known as Stellantis. This merger includes 14 brands: Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram and Vauxhall. We will cover the second 7 brands today. For each we will check out the various models, the top vehicle sold by each, and the overall sales and market share both in the US and Europe. I thought this would be an interesting way to get to know some of the brands from PSA and also check out how FCA is doing as well.

    I feel like someone from Europe should do these videos over from their perspective. You provide so much good data but I feel like Americans sometimes struggle with understanding the European market. Small cars are booming here, petrol is expensive and so is owning a car. You don’t need a gas guzzling V8 when you’re commuting to and from work. We also don’t have giant asphalt fields to park here, things are different. Keep that in mind and keep up the good work!

    • @jalpat2272
      @jalpat2272 3 года назад +2

      and American are overproud on their v8 and calling 4,5 meters cars compact.

    • @MarspeedCars
      @MarspeedCars  3 года назад +8

      Absolutely that would be cool. Unfortunately our way of life with respect to vehicles is just different. My Italian cousins told me “North America is full of extremely wide roads and huge trucks” when I went there to visit so that kind of opened my eyes a bit as to how we view each respective place. Here SUVs and trucks are booming and gas has been relatively the same cost with fluctuations over the past while and I know it’s way cheaper than overseas. Our roads are simply more conducive to bigger vehicles so it’s not really an issue, but I remember driving around in France in 2018 and I feel that my Charger just couldn’t survive the parking and tight quarters 😂 But some people do cherish their cars and even if it’s just point A to point B, I’ve noticed many want to have that fun or nice looking car just to put a smile on their own faces (myself included).

    The facts for Opel are not completely correct. Already in the fall of last year, the Cascada, Karl, Zafira and Adam models were taken out of production. Only two models remain on the old GM platform : the Astra and Insignia which will be replaced by new models based on a PSA platform.

    • @patrickbateman6885
      @patrickbateman6885 3 года назад +3

      Correct! Also I think Chrysler bring in the Insignia, 508 and americanise it and make it luxurious, they sell the 308 or Astra and make it a bit more premium than a Corolla like a Mazda 3, Dodge take the PSA Astra when that comes out and sell it as your neon/dart with a OPC version with like 300hp and 420nm of torque and PHEV, Chrysler take the 3008 and 5008 and americanise it and sell it or take the Stelvio and Tonale and sell them as Chrysler’s, and Dodge to replace the Journey could bring in the 5008 and sell a fast PHEV

    • @obelic71
      @obelic71 3 года назад

      @@patrickbateman6885 The moneymaker of this all is that a universal platform can be adjusted for local markets.
      A car that has to operate in the south Americas on bad roads has different needs then the same plaform used on the smooth German high speed Autobahns.
      It they do it right and listen to the locals who sell and use the cars you have a win win situation.
      The tooling of the standarised platforms will be universal but only the local requierments and customer needs differ.
      A insignia estate adjusted to the US needs under the Chrysler badge would be a great car when ist reliable.
      All brands from the stellatlantis group CAN build and are known to build reliable cars and sometimes fubar big in models.
      reliability, practicality and cost of ownership is the most important for the modern commen carbuyer who uses and sees his car more and more like a home appliance.
      The Dodge Ram for example is very popular in Europe due to the Diesel scandal and inner citiesban of Diesels.
      They are mostly used as commercial vehicels for towing trailers.
      They are converted to run on LPG or LNG due to the high petrol prices in Europe.
      Roughly the price of petrol is a pint/quart (depending on the country )for the price of a gallon in the US
      LPG and LNG are way cheaper and cleaner fuels so they are taxed lower.
      Time will tell if Stellatlantis folows the fast GM way (maximum profit for the shareholder) or the slow less proftiable but more long time durability sustainability customersatisfaction path.

    In order for PSA to sell Opels and Peugeots in the U.S and Canada, they need to style the vehicles uniquely as the Opel looks like a hastily badged Buicks, and they would need powerful engines as U.S consumers are obsessed with 0 to 60 mph times.

      As a matter of fact, they slot the mid to large saloon (308 & up) as well as the SUV line up to Chrysler and move the brand more upmarket.

      That 0.9 litre mentioned in the video was turbo charged and quite powerful for a small car, my previous car was 0.9 litre without turbo charging and it was fine because it was a kei car so still had a reasonable power to weight ratio, it wasn't great on the highway, speed wasn't an issue just because it was so light (750Kg) it got pushed around by the wind or when passing trucks.
      BTW i've driven smaller cars if your interested in how small cars can be have a look at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daihatsu_Mira , I've driven both the L55 and the L200 (which was my work cor for over a year) and owned the L250 (mentioned above)

      Actually until 2018 MY there was a T-0.9L I3 (optional in Europe) available in USDM on the Smart ForTwo, which was of Nissan origin (rear engined version of the one on the EU-spec Micra and used in some Renault models).
      The rear-engined version of the 0.9L also was used in the 4-door variants, the Smart ForFour and the Renault Twingo (Mk. 2 / 2G), never making the trip across the Atlantic.
      The real reason for its' departure from Smart lineup wasn't for going ('19 MY) EV-only. The Micra and some Renault models using the front-engined version of the 0.9L had COOLING PROBLEMS. Imagine what could (and will) happen with the rear-engined versions as those have less place to cool down (Nissan Vanette anyone?).
      PS: The T-0.9L used by Fiat was an inline 2-pot (just 2 cylinders), not an I3...

The Chrysler crossfire was a perfect example, it was released on an old Mercedes platform at the same time that Mercedes phased it out in their own lineup and released a new platform under their own brand. Same thing with the Charger and Challenger LX platform - a retired Mercedes platform that Chrysler was forced to use, because Mercedes wouldn't let them release cars under the latest platforms.
